View Full Version : "Create new thread" idea

After seeing ANOTHER repeated thread over at the GTA boards, I've come up with an idea to try and combat this problem - ie. users not using the search button!
Perhaps when the button "Create New Thread" is clicked, it could bring up a page looking (more or less) something like this...

I think at least then, with users actually shown the search box, they might be more inclined to use it. (As many users are just too lazy to click on the "Search" link on the green navbar.)
But still, users are given the option to continue to "Create New Thread", if they still cannot find what they are searching for.

It might get annoying for some people, but I wouldn't mind it after the first few times. In fact, I'd make sure to double-check if that were added.
It could go either way, but I'm sure people can get over the fact that they would have to make one extra click.
EDIT: And I do love what you've done so far with your photo albums. ;)

Sounds like a good idea, I can't see anything wrong with it. One wonders how hard it would be too implement though. It would definitely encourage people top search before duplicating threads though.

Well after the newest update I have to validate my authority to delete shit every once in a while, and I must say that is annoying enough. I can't imagine having to go through a second screen every new topic I wanted to make.
It would cut down on a lot of bullshit though... I could go either way on this one, I'll give it up to the admins.

1- Im with Pants. We have to login again to moderate a load of stuff, absolute pain in the ass.
2- The person has been lazy/dumb enough not to search. Surely if they cant be arsed, they will just click to say theyve searched already and we're back to square 1.

Fair enough! :D
Guess we'll have to beat them 'till they learn! :p
EDIT: Thanks Otisbum! ;)

I don't see any reason why this wouldn't work, especially if that only popped up the first 5 times or so. And I'm not sure what having to validate to delete has to do with it.
P.S. - Rival, RuneScape? Phailz.

Lol, my younger bro shares this laptop. He plays. :p I've got my 360 to keep ME busy! ;) (I won't let him create a new profile because it wastes space on the memory.)
And the mods were saying that the fact that they have to confirm their identity every couple of hours (maybe) becomes annoying - so having this screen appear every time you wanted to create a new thread might also become annoying.
EDIT: (Although, maybe the mods might consider using a macro add-on for FF. It'd make entering the username and password a hell of a lot quicker - and hell, maybe less annoying!)

P.S. - Rival, RuneScape? Phailz. That sounds good. If we could just make this happen for the first 5 or so times a user attempts to post a thread, that'd be great.
Regardless, I see your points Minty and Pants.

I am all for this idea.
If you are going to set up a thread, it should be meaningful and considerate in the first place, so spending 10 more seconds shouldn't be a big deal. I thought it was some unspoken rule that you had to spend 10 minutes thinking about and reading over your thread before you posted it anyway.
On a side note, why is every idea always shot down? You guys seem to find one small flaw in the idea and from that point stick to your argument without considering solutions to that one small flaw. There are more flaws in many things that we have now than there are in some of the ideas being posted, but since a regular member came up with it you feel the need to find anyway to turn it down. Perhaps that's not your intention, but you end up doing it accidentally anyway.

Not every idea gets shot down. This one hasnt been shot down yet- we have just pointed out a major flaw as far as we're concerned.

Admins and Mods are selfish :p Is there any way to get around having to log in multiple times you want to edit/delete something? If so then we're onto a winner here me thinks. If not, I'd be in the same boat as you and say it'd be a pain in the arse and take to long. To combat that, hire more mods and implement the idea? Give it a trial period perhaps? If it still takes too long and you don't want to hire new staff, just scrap it.

In all honesty, there won't be that much difference in the long run (time-wise, that is). I mean, the other button to go straight to create a new topic is right there - it'd just mean one more click than usual.
I think this has more pro's than con's, being that if prompted, more users will actually use the search feature if it is (somewhat) forced upon them. It's not like you have to constantly re-enter your details to use this feature - and ultimately the only thing changing for those that actually need to create a new thread would be the clicking of one more button.

or maybe, when you click submit other threads with similar names and content would show up?

This is a great idea. This needs to be made. Just because you have to make an extra click saves on a bunch of clutter. Heck the less multiple threads we have the less on the servers. Just a thought.
