View Full Version : GTA4 Overhyped?

Okay everywhere I have seen game this game a 9.5+, after playing through it and playing it since the day it came out, I cant feel that its pretty strongly overhyped. The visuals are amazing, the gameplay is gritty and well done with a nice story, but little kinks like the garbage Mass Effect esque aiming system(with all the faults), the inability to walk sharply in small areas(ladders and cliff edges are a pita), and the tacked on, bland multiplayer make me rate it probably an 8-8.75 overall. The singleplayer is great overall, but once thats done, I think the multiplayer is like a slow deathmatch, and although it has a lot of options, I just think it gets bland and boring after a little while...

I think you have reason bro, I agree with your tought. And I want to say one more thing about multiplayer: in my opinion the modes are not well balanced. For example if you play a race match and you win, you can earn 1500$; but if you play a deathmatch and you finish in the last position you will earn probably more than 1500$ in 10 min... no meaning for me...

Yes it's overhyped.
I've seen it reviewed at a10/10 which is a perfect game. Impossible as no game could ever be this because there's always room for improvement. I didn't enjoy the storyline as much as Vice City(my favourite in the series) or San Andreas. The multiplayer gets tedious after a few days.
There's virtually no customisation. That's why I think Saints Row beats it. Creating myself in a game always increases my enjoyment.
Flying Rats are also evil. Back in the PS2 days a 100 hidden packages would have been enough but not now. Next Gen consoles get Next Gen Hidden Packages. 200 pigeons not quite as bad as 420 flags in Assassins Creed but still extremely boring to do.
The soundtrack is also lacking. I used to cruise around Vice City listening to tunes.

Maybe....... Some things are good but i agree with the music comment... San andreas had some awesome track and this.. well not so much

I wouldn't really say overhyped, but the reviews that it's getting are definitely too generous. I've already explained the reason why I think this, so I won't get into it again.

they gvae it a ten recognising that sum ppl may think they mean its perfect but they explained why they gave it.

somewhat overhyped, doesnt make it any less of a game, but not 10/10 material.

I agree when people say that the reviews were too generous. It's a great game, but it is no 10.

Actually thinking, I can't play this for a long while in a row. It's all great and besides the difficulty of some missions I don't have anything to complain about, but it gets boring fast somehow. When I think back to playing Crackdown, with all its faults, I did not feel like stopping every two hours... not saying Crackdown is a better game but GTA just has a lack of motivating me to go on.

I guess I'm the only one who thinks that the hype was WELL deserved. I'm also one who believes that the game was well reviewed at 10. I'm no fanboy, I voiced my utter discontent with San Andreas many times. But I honestly feel that GTA IV is THE BEST GTA so far. I love the story, the gameplay tweaks and additions are awesome, the multiplayer is fun and varied etc...What more can you ask for? I don't see what people are complaining about. I haven't been able to put the game down since I've had it. I stopped playing San Andreas after about a week. And don't get me started on Saints Row.

It all depends, remember reviews are peoples opinions, there is no right or wrong opinion.
Although something like Halo 3 was over-hyped.

Now that I will agree....Halo 3 was soooo over-hyped. I personally preferred COD4 which got half the hype. Sorry to get off topic.

GTA is a great game no doubt, but to rate it a 10 as compared to other Grand Theft Autos is kind of ridiculous. Its like rating Halo 3 a 10 because it does XX thats better than Halo 2, etc. Its like everybody played it for 5 minutes, said "Holy crap the city looks amazing" and gave it a 10. People should definitely buy it, but I just thought the game was super over-rated / over-hyped after I played it for a while ;)

What's the point in having a rating of 10 if nothing gets that rating ?

Great point! I mean what people fail to understand is a 10 doesn't necessarily mean that the game is perfect. There is no such thing as perfect....Giving the game a 10 is just a way of separating it from the pack. It's the highest mark you can receive, which just means that it's an exceptional piece of work. I personally think the game deserves that mark, not because I think it's a flawless game, but because it's an amazing success on every front in my opinion. And obviously most of the reviewers share that same view. To rate it any lower would make it "ordinary", which in my opinion isn't fair for such a work of art.

Anyhow, how does a review over-hype a game ?
Isn't hype generally built up before the game is released not after ?

Guys, this is ROCKSTAR we're talking about here. They over-hype everything. They always produce a good game, but it's always over-hyped.
Remember VC? Oh yeah! Beautiful water! (But you can't swim!) Look at all these gangs! (That do nothing!) Your clothing changes! (Into 11 or so pre-designated outfits)
SA was the worst! Car customization! (Change the rims and the color, woohoo!) Exercise! (Tap X repeatedly!) Eating and RPG system! (Lose hunger on a mission and waste your X-tapping from earlier!) Customize your gang! (Choose to recruit members with pistols or tecs!) Big, beautiful world! (Tons and tons of open, pointless space that just looks nice!) Follow people around, they all have their own lives! (Walking around holding hands for hours and hours and hours and hours!)
Etc.
It happens, they have to advertise it somehow. The game was still good, but nowhere near as amazingly amazing as they said. What happened to all the interiors, rockstar?

Great game but not as good as I was expecting. I think that the multiplayer lets the game down a little. But single player blew me away. But I have to agree that once it is done , its done.

I have never been a fan of the GTA games and I picked this up last Tuesday at blockbuster to rent. I Have played it on and off and I do get bored with it. I get bored with the missions, I get bored with free roam and I don't see what's so different from the other GTA games (which I played a collectively for about 10 mins) besides better graphics. But I'm one that don't believe graphics make the game, it just makes a game look sexy. People just over with the OMG, Multiplayer. Yeah it has multiplayer and yeah it has a lot of modes but I don't like any. But what GTA does have is a great story it just sucks it takes about 30-40 hours for it to unfold with ridiculous missions that get repetitive and annoying. I do believe the game was over hyped but for the story itself, it delivers to me anyways. People ask me if I bought it, I tell them no then they ask me if I ill buy it. And I tell them the same thing. If I had the money (i have no job) I would (then I wouldn't have to rush the game). It might deserve a 10 but calling it the best game in the last 10 years (or all time), its not. And thats where I think its being over hyped.

Multiplayer is a bit of a let-down, I don't think people are gonna be hammering it online in a few months. I think a majority of the multiplayer games are terrible and not a great deal of fun.
The single player is visually very very good, but the storyline hasnt got me as hooked as the other gta titles.

I'd say it's at least a 9.75. But it really depends on how much you like free-roaming sandbox games. I love Saints Row, almost a little bit more than GTA IV. But, you have to admit, there is alot of content, and extra stuff to do.

I think some people think of overhyped as overrated. Also overhyped has to prove the game doesn't deliver; a flop. Its safe to say that GTAIV is nothing close to that. Rockstar made Liberty City into a world that all other knock-offs will use for years to come. You can't call that an overhyped failure.
At the end of the year when it wins all of the fruity awards people will cry conspiracy so its of no use. Then again, when has their been a GOTY that everyone can agree on? Maybe if Niko had the option to buy a gaudy platinum dildo necklace it would live up to the hype?

Okay, my opinion is that GTA IV did deserve the 10/10 rating. I didnt think I'd like this game, since I'd never gotten into the GTA series at all. But my boyfriend made me play it, and I realized what a great game it is. I bought it like the day after he made me play it...which was like, two days after it came out, and I havent been able to put it down. Yes, theres always room for improvement. I dont think the game is 'perfect' par-say. But I do love playing it. Its addicting, and, well, I dont want to put it down at all.

Overall I wouldn't say it's over-hyped. To me a game is hyped when they go out and really try to get people excited. They did that a little with GTAIV but at the same time the majority of people seem to have got excited over what they were doing with the game not the advertising.
As far as the reviews go my only problem is that most of the reviewers were unable to put aside their personal excitement and write a proper review of the game. Most of the time even if they mentioned a flaw in the game they would gloss straight over it. They might as well have been written by fanboys.
That said reviews had no impact at all on whether or not I was going to buy the game, so I can't really complain. =P

i know i'm going to get flamed for this and i know it's completely off topic but i don't care.... halo 3 was not overhyped. the 360 was made for it. halo is what made the xbox a success in the first place and then what took xbox live to the next level with halo 2. i'm not trying to diss anyone on this site but maybe the fact that you are concerned with your gamerscore doesn't let you play a game for more than a couple weeks before you move onto something else. halo 3 is the best online fps game that there has ever been. cod4 really can't compare. the level of skill is required to be good at the game is unparalleled for consoles.
i know i probably pissed a bunch of you off and i'm not trying to start any type of argument, i'm just trying to justify the fact that halo is the shit and i'm pissed that people keep knocking it as overhyped.

I agree. The most exciting moment I had in this game is when I realized I could turn off the radio. Unlike the previous GTA games where I would occasionally reach a desitination and stay in the car just to listen to a song.

That's how I feel......I can't get myself to stop playing it. For once in a while, I'm not "achievement whoring" but actually playing a game for the fun of playing it. It's very very addicting and the story just keeps getting better and better.
