View Full Version : Car camera = epic fail

Hard to believe that none of the reviews are even mentioning how broken the car camera is in this game, look for it all to come out when the masses start playing it...
The problem is not the cars themseves. It's the camera, it's not 'stuck' to the back of the car like you see in most games. There is a huge delay for it to swing around eventually to catch up with where you point the car. This means that most of the time you're turning into corners BLIND. No joke. I've looked up and down every option/menu and there is no way to change this, there isn't any. You can use the hood(bonnet) view, but this isn't the way that GTA is meant to be played really. You can swing the camera manually with the right thubstick, but this seems to make the car fishtail even more. I don't know if they intended the game to be played this way but if so, it would be the first game I've ever played where you have to drive with both sticks.
I can understand the cars being boats with super mushy suspensions at the beginning of the game, later on you get cars that actually handle pretty well. Too bad nobody will be able to see where they're going.

I can understand what you're talking about, and it sort of affected previous GTAs, but normally only when switching from reverse to forward drive.
I haven't gotten GTA IV yet (tomorrow, woo!), but if it controls like previous GTAs and lets you aim/look directly left/right/behind you with certain buttons, those typically reset the view behind the car once you let go of the button. So you'd have to glance over to the right for a millisecond and then the camera view would be behind the car again.
I don't know if it's the same, like I said, but that's typically the only solution. Other than that... yeah. I don't know why you'd want the view to be fixed directly to the back of the car anyway, it feels a lot more natural and easier to track when it's swinging and pivoting.

Saints Row is exactly the same. Should be a breeze for me then.

Roy1751, don't be stupid. You simply move the right stick so as to get the camera to show the way you're going. If you're SO incapable of driving a car properly, then it's not the game's fault. It's YOURS!

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. This was a big problem in previous GTA games too and I just can't comprehend why reviewers aren't complaining about it or why Rockstar themselves aren't noticing it.
Another problem is the framerate. I've only barely seen one review mention it and it constantly gets on my nerves.

Burnout: Paradise has a similar problem with the camera and when people complained about it that's the EXACT answer the developers said.
But there's one gigantic problem with that answer. How the heck are you gonna keep your thumb on the right analog stick at all times? It would have been great if the camera's Y axis would stay at a specific angle when you touch the right analog stick, but that's not how it works. Once you let go, it reverts to the normal camera angle.

Some of you guys crack me up (Sectus), you spend all this time on these boards complaining about the little things.....Let me ask you this....If you dislike these things so much why waste the time and energy on these pointless posts? Hey when a game is bad or unworthy of my time, I stop playing it. I don't jump on the forums saying that this gets on my nerves and that reviewers should of said that. So there's my solution to your headaches, the game is such a letdown and it's driving you insane...stop playing it. Hey there's always Saints Who or is it Row....I'm confused.

Well, there's actually a middleground between hating and loving a game. I don't hate GTA4, but I don't love it either. It's simply a good game with positive sides to it and bad sides to it.
Right now, the feedback the game is getting is extremely biased. Everybody is praising every part of the game, even the most trivial parts of the game. If that is allowed I certainly think it should be allowed to point out the negative parts of the game.

So you're basically saying that EVERY site out there is biased? Not one of these reviewers had an unbiased eye towards the game? I think it's unfair to say that. So far the game has been reviewed by the same sites that reviewed goty Cod4. The same guys that reviewed the beloved Halo 3, Bioshock etc...None of those guys that you claim to be "biased" have given neither one of those hype machines a perfect score.....How do you explain that? The reason why GTA4 is getting that kind of recognition is because reviewers are looking at the bigger picture. They are not going to nit pick and point out petty issues. I don't remember where I read this, but someone said it's like looking at a great piece of art and pointing out flaws in brush strokes.....You have to look at the Art piece as a whole. These reviewers gave the game a perfect score not because it is perfect ( no game is) but because they appreciated that work of art. You guys on the other hand don't, THAT my friend is what separates us.

In my opinion, all major review sites are biased, yeah. Rockstar has been stupidly specific about who they let review their games, and they held an event so they could personally show the game to the reviewers. And there's the fact no review site will risk making Rockstar mad because then they'll probably lose the chance to get previews and such for future Rockstar games.
Perhaps if the developers of Saints Row had the same luxury, the general opinion of that game would be a lot higher than "just a GTA clone".
And regarding art, I don't freaking care. This is a game, and I judge it as a game. If other games happens to be more fun, well, then this game is worse. If you ignore such things like the side missions being a disappointment because the game is a "work of art" then you're an ignorant fanboy. There's nothing wrong with liking a game and still acknowledge the negative parts of it.
And I think you're misunderstanding a bit what I say. I'm not saying GTA4 is a horrible game and I haven't said Saints Row is better (only that it's better in specific areas, the same way GTA4 is better than Saints Row in other areas). It's just that GTA4 is getting a stupid amount of hype, and all the review sites basically claim it's the best game ever made... and well, the game just isn't *that* good.

I guess they made Bungie mad by not giving them a perfect score. And Infinity Ward must be pissed because their Game of the Year wasn't given a perfect score. So those reviewers will never get to see an exclusive preview ever again from them right? Your logic is ridiculous. If you're going to use the "biased" card, make sure you can back it up with consistent examples. Halo 3 was probably one of the biggest hypes in the world of gaming and they didn't get a perfect score... So according to your logic, Bungie/MS didn't strike the fear in the heart of the reviewers like Rockstar did? Oh and I'm no fanboy, I voiced my utter disappointment with San Andreas many many times. I'm not just going to jump on the band wagon just because it's R*, but I do know one thing...GTA4 didn't get a perfect score because it's the weakest of their games or because their "side missions are disappointing". That's all I'm gonna say.

If its anything like the san andreas and saints row driving camera angle thing all you do is move the right stick to view where your going before you turn, this was in test drive unlimited and nobody ever complained about it then.

It's not perfect scores or nothing. Halo 3 and CoD 4 got ridiculously high scores from many sources. And many of those scores were actually perfect!
http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/halo3?q=halo%203 - Here for instance. Big sites like 1up, Eurogamer and others gave the game a maximum score. Other big sites like IGN and Gamespot gave it 9.5 which is nearly perfect.
No publisher or developer would ever complain about those scores.
If you honestly complained about San Andreas I'll be surprised if you don't see anything bad about GTA4. Because it takes several steps backwards in some areas compared to that game.

Other than the car cam, the game is great. Maybe nobody is mentioning it because you do get used to it after a while.
You guys talking about using the right stick, I have never had to do that in any driving game. I've played and beat all the games mentioned in this thread, it is way worse than that. The camera just takes too long to come around, and you will constantly be babysitting it. I planned spending a ton of time just driving around doing stuff... Now, not so much. Like I said I love the game other than this.

I think you drive with both analog sticks in one of the Halo games.

I just played San Andreas on the weekend and it did the same thing. Isn't this how it's always been? It is a bit annoying, but if we got used to it before...
I don't think it makes much sense though actually... if we're the character, we should see in the direction he's looking at all times. Oh well. Maybe I'll use the first person camera for driving.

that's how i beat half the races in san andreas. found the other (normal) camera too poor of a view, generally because i couldn't see what was directly in front of me.

halo 3? one stick is literally acceleration, and the other turning. i HATE it, but you get used to it.
