Just wondering, what's up with everyone calling their threads the "Official _________ Thread"? Last time I check, as nonstaff, they're not qualified to make any thread official. Maybe I'm the only one annoyed by this, but it seems like an advanced example of backseat modding.
And yes, I understand that if someone makes a discussion thread about, say, monkey wrenches, that all other new threads about monkey wrenches will be locked in favor of that one, therefore making the original thread official. But still, no reason to call your thread "official" in the first place.

Yeah, good call. I've noticed this a lot lately... What gives?
Edit - How exactly is is 'backseat moderating' though?

a non-staff person making a staff decision without said aforementioned staff authority

I have no problem with them as long as there isn't a thread already created on the topic. Don't understand why they put official in the title though.

Personally I can't stand when people do that kind of crap. IMO we should have a rule where people can't do that, as it isn't official unless one of the staff says so.
>.<
I'll leave an "official" statement to the higher staff though.
lolz, get it, official.

I personally think that only moderators, super moderators, and administrators should make "Official" threads. Then they have the right to sticky them and so on. But it bothers me when regular registered users make them.

Exactly. Declaring a thread "official" is an indirect disrespect to our admins.

I made an Official trading card thread for the ol UEFA Champions League game. It worked great no other threads were made on the subject. I did it before anyone made a thread saying "I need this one or whos got that one". It was more to stop lots of other threads being made on the same topic.
I dont think its a big deal at all if its done properly for like a TV show, its just so people know all discussion abou that thing goes in that thread.

That's the point. Who are you (not literally you) to say that all discussion goes in that thread? It's one thing if a senior member sees a need for a trading thread, but another if some random user wants to discuss a certain movie. And it gets worse if it's done on semi-important threads.
There's an 'Official' List of Cheats thread up right now that probably isn't staff-sanctioned. (slap me if I'm wrong) Let's say some newer member thinks the thread is formatted all wrong or whatever, and he wants to make a new one. He's not going to because the thread says "Official".
My point is, it's so incredibly pretentious to put "Official" in the title, and nothing good can come out of it.
What annoys me about people naming their threads 'official', is the fact that it gives off the impression of not wanting any other threads like it.
For example, if we keep on getting more and more 'official' threads, there's not going to be anything to create a topic about anymore because there will be an 'official' one.
Obviously that's just an extreme example, but that's the impression I get and it annoys me.

I think in some cases the users should be able to make Official threads (i.e. Sports) but they have already been made.
I don't see why it is a huge deal but Marx0r has a good point. Newer users might not try to fix something if they see it is official.

I get your point but like i said if its approriate there shouldnt be a problem as long as someone doesnt make it to vague like an official TV thread instead of an official thread about a programme.
I dont think a lot can be done as it is just a word, but if one is made well then it should be left and if ot mods and admins can then sort it out.
Side Note: Is this the official anti-official thread or are there other smaller ones? :p

Well, Marx0r is a type of low level staff..... so this might actually be as close as we'll get to the official anti-official threads thread
