I got my Wii on launch day, and I remember hearing not too much after that there was a new black Wii coming out that would have a DVD drive in it.
Anyone heard anything new about this... still coming.... canceled....?

I know Nintendo have said that for the European market at least, there are no plans for any new colours, so I'm assuming this would be the same for a new model with DVD drive. I remember hearing the rumour too, but then again, why would you want a DVD drive in your Wii really? Everyone tends to have another DVD player, either a standalone, a PS2 a 360 etc etc.... so I don't think it's really an essential thing to have.
I think because the Wii has been so ridiculously successful, they don't really need to release a new model until sales drop. Which they still haven't. And with Mario Kart, SSBB and especially Wii Fit around, I don't think sales figures will drop any time soon either.
Just love your beautiful white Wii! :)

You mean the Wii 2.0?
No word on the colored Wii's unfortunately.

Never heard of this before. I remember when they were first showing of Wii's as the "Revolution" it was black, but that's it.
I can't believe I've never heard of this before...:p

I ask this question in all seriousness, and with no intent to flame here, but...does anyone care about a Wii with a DVD player in it? I ask because I figure everyone, like me, has about 10 million things that play DVDs now and that paying more for a Wii that could do it would be out of the question. I mean, I guess I'd use it if my 360 broke, if I couldn't use the DVD player hooked up to my TV, if the 3 old DVD players I have sitting in the garage weren't there anymore, if none of the other DVD players hooked up to TVs in my house weren't working, and if all my computers were broken...
Personally I want to see a Wii with a hard drive or, preferrably, a hard drive add on for my current Wii. Now THAT would be exciting to me :).

That's pretty much what I was saying, although I do agree that a HD add-on would be really good. Although I doubt they'll bother any time soon, as they don't really need to work on anything of that scale - the hardware is doing so well as it is atm, it doesn't really need any alterations to improve sales.

Yeah, they don't NEED to do it for sure, but I wish they would because maybe that would make them less stingy with releasing N64 and some of the other larger games on the Virtual Console. If I had a hard drive I'd download a lot more games than I have from the VC, but as it is I don't buy the N64 games I already have the original cartridges for because I don't want to store them on a memory card.

I agree.
The Wii seriously lacks Memory Capacity. I would prefer an HD add-on, compared to buying all those damn SD Cards. Without any SD Cards, what good would the 512 Internal Memory do? There are so many games I would like to purchase from the VC, but with the lack of memory, this is what keeps me away.

This is very true. As an example, my 360 HD has 600Mb free out of a 20Gb capacity, so how did Nintendo expect 512Mb internal flash memory to be enough for the Wii? Especially with the upcoming WiiWare.
SD cards are a terrible storage medium for the Wii - it takes an age to copy anything to and from them, and you can't access directly games directly from them. I don't know about most people, but I just cannot be bothered with that. And there's no way I'm deleting games to re-download them when I want to play them - what if the Wii Shop or my internet is down when I want a certain game? I haven't bought a VC game in a long time, and it's partly down to this.... (even though I have about 6000 spare Wii Points!!)

I doubt Nintendo will get around to making a hard drive anytime soon. Besides, everyone is busy playing Brawl/Mario Kart/Wii Fit to want one.
It's a shame though, I really want a few games but damn memory on the Wii...

Yeah, 512 seems like an incredible shortsight on Nintendo's part, almost as if they never expected to offer anything beyond maybe the Super NES/Genesis generation of games. Every time they release a Neo Geo or N64 game (I don't know how big the Neo Geo games are but I assume they're decent sized) I'm interested in I always end up holding myself back because of the amount of memory they'd take up. I snagged Wave Race 64 because I'd never owned it before, but I probably would have bought most of the 64 games even though I already own them were it not for size limitations. As it is I'll probably only DL Sin and Punishment since it was a Japanese only game and just wait and hope Nintendo comes to its senses.

Yeah Sin and Punishment is the last thing I downloaded and that was the week it was released. I still haven't played it yet though stupidly! :p
Anyway, another thing I think the Wii is sorely missing is a decent official rechargeable battery/charger system. Something like the play and charge kit on 360.
I got this about a year ago:
http://svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=3272&ref=froogle&ci_src=18615224&ci_sku=55015
It's alright, but it's not really ideal. I've seen third party ones that plug into the battery while it's attached to the remote, which is better, but as it's third party I'm never sure what the quality of the battery will be like. I know on the one I've got it doesn't really last very long. I also noticed that the one I was looking at had the EXACT same lead to charge it as my one, and I know for a fact that this lead is a rubbishy piece of tat.
Come on Nintendo, get your asses in gear! :p

An HDD would be nice, but one that you don't have to have sitting along side the machine.
Also, I wish they had done it in black in the first place ! All my other stuff is in black apart from the Sky+ box that I have. Black is so much nicer and you know when you have to dust it again due to the inbuilt dust collection mechanism.

Every Wii that has been sold to the public has a DVD-ROM installed in it if I am not mistaken. The issue is programming. The current firmware does not support the playback of DVD video. With an upgrade to the firmware Nintendo could add a DVD playback function and EVERY Wii could do this.

TBH i cant see the point in a DVD player in the wii i mean it will cost more to buy plus a DVD player is in the ps2 and a cheap dvd player is like 10
