NiN are the top of the genre I'd say.
Besides the questionable "Ghosts", the Sub-par "With Teeth" and the album that was most likely written by a 15 year-old; "Year Zero" at least...

What are you talking about? Nine Inch Nails ARE industrial, what would you call them?
But no, Rammstein I find isn't.
Skinny Puppy are amazing... but top industrial band? Definently not.
Top spot has to belong to Nine Inch Nails, hands down. If you don't count the recent albums filled with crap.
And a close second would have to be Combichrist, though not many people know them.

The old albums had an industrial sound but most people do not consider it to be industrial music. If you've heard real industrial you'd understand why. As for the new albums I honestly have to say his best albums are The Fragile, Year Zero, and Ghosts I-IV. Even "The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust" was great (I'm a big fan of Saul Williams.) If you're looking for industrial might I suggest a little band called "My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult."

I'm sorry, but I think you're completely wrong. NIN put Industrial on the map, so to speak, and brought it into the mainframe of things. Industrial is any type of music having a "mechanical" sound, hence the term industrial.
I can't believe you'd say Year Zero is even a good album, I'd have to say the best are The Downward Spiral and Further Down The Spiral. Year Zero and With_Teeth were horrible. I've yet to be graced with the Ghosts I-IV album, though.
And I have listened to TKK, they're alright.

What's your problem with Year Zero? That album was genius.
As for NIN "bringing industrial into the mainstream" I'm pretty sure that's something people DON'T like. When something gets popular it starts getting mass produced and it turns to shit. By your definition any electronic music is apparently industrial.

I just really, really didn't care for it. It was too political for my taste. I prefer the angrier NIN. Broken was amazing as well, short but genious.
And who cares if something is mainstream. People try so hard not to be or listen to something "mainstream" but it becomes inevidable if mass quanities of people enjoy it. Year Zero and With_Teeth were just prime examples of NIN getting turned to shit!
Not all electronical, synthesized music is industrial. I'm saying anything with a "mechanical" sound. Shit that sounds like machinery, which is what NIN sounds like. It's noise. It's beautiful. Industrial is noise.

So Boris and Sunn O))) are industrial?
I agree that With Teeth was a lousy album even though it had a few good tracks. Year Zero was a nearly perfect album in my opinion but obviously that isn't your thing. I'm saying that once something becomes mainstream it starts getting mass produced by record labels. They just start forming bands to pump out the same tired bullshit over and over again.
On a side note, you're going to hate Ghosts.

Thanks for the warning, I was going to purchase it for my birthday this weekend on my trip out of town since we don't have a music store here. So I'll just save my money then. Actually, on second thought I might as well add it to my collection so nevermind! I have all the other albums and singles anyway.
I haven't ever heard of Boris and Sunn O, to be honest so I couldn't say.
The definition of "industrial" is A style of rock music marked by harsh rhythms, little melody, and nihilistic lyrics. Which marks NIN to a T.
If they are not industrial, then please tell me what you would label them as.

Not necessarily sure what I would label NIN as. I said there are industrial overtones but I just wouldn't call it industrial and many people would agree. Ghosts I-IV was released for free online (by Reznor himself) so why not just download it and see if you like it? While we're on the subject of NIN I'd just like to clear something up. You are aware that Nine Inch Nails only consists of Trent Reznor, correct? I keep seeing you referring to NIN as a "them" but it's really only a "him."
Sunn O))) is a drone/noise band and Boris has done some drone/noise rock albums and collaborated with Sunn O))) for a few albums. You characterized Industrial as noise but "Noise" is already an actual genre of music. Youtube them to see for yourself.

I do realize this, I'm just used to refering to bands as "them" I guess. I know Trent does all the recording, sounds, remixing, and producing and all that fun stuff. Though for the obvious exception of his live albums such as And All That Could Have Been.
Anyway, I'm not looking to argue. We both seem to have strong, unswayable views on this. I'll check out that free download, I knew it was released online but I thought it was for a fee. I think I'll check out Sunn O and Boris, thanks for the suggestion.

I didn't see if we're still on the NiN topic, but I have to say, IMO the albums rank as such:
TDS
Broken
The Fragile (filler anyone?)
Ghosts
Pretty Hate Machine
With Teeth
Year Zero
The politics were redundant and overplayed in Year Zero, I felt like I was listening to a high-school speech... for an hour.
Trent has always been more potent than brilliant in songwriting, but he's gone off the path of "questionable" and into the path of "Jesus Christ, what is this shit!?"

Then the concept of the album obviously flew right over your head. The songs were meant to be from the perspective of different people.
Anyway, if you like Skinny Puppy then check out "Front Line Assembly." It's a side project of one of the members.

I understood the concept.

Didn't like the album.
No amount of concept album jazz can save it from poor lyrics, and an overdone concept to do.

I agree. I never thought I would say that about a NIN album. Trent has never ceased to wow me until now.
I got the whole concept... but I didn't like it. I don't listen to NIN for politics. If I wanted politics in songs I would go listen to some Anti-Flag and NOFX.
I even clung onto hope when With_Teeth was released.
But Year Zero ruined it, and even more so when he released Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D which was TERRIBLE. 3 bad ones in a row!
I currently have every "halo" he released with the exception of Ghost I-IV, if the pattern continues I think I'll have to abandon my faith in him.

Gunshots by Computer owned though.
Saul Williams in his Three album or so career (plus Gunshots by Computer and other songs) has really made a mark on me.

Personally, as I said before, I love the direction he's going in. He mixes it up with every album. Would you really want him to release The Downward Spiral 13 or 14 more times? Every album he's made has been special for it's own reasons.

Nine Inch Nails isn't industrial. There's industrial influence in earlier work and I guess some in Year Zero, but they sure as hell aren't industrial.
A good bit of Year Zero hate in this topic I see, too. I liked Year Zero a lot, and can't really see how you guys could fault it e_e. Vessel and The Great Destroyer in particular were fantastic. Eons better than With_Teeth anyway.
On the topic of Skinny Puppy, I love them. I'm kinda meh as far as their recent stuff goes, though Mythmaker was a moderate improvement over TGWOTR IMO. VIVIsect VI and Too Dark Park are great, and though I'd be taunted for doing so I think that their singles collection The Singles Collect is strong enough to stand on its own simply because the music is that good and the songs work together well enough. That would be my favourite piece of their work.
I've been meaning to check out Front Line Assembly for a while. Hopefully theor stuff sounds better than Rx, Error and Ohgr =P

I was more impressed that Twiggy was on bass lol.
I own it along with "Closure" and "And All That Could Have Been..." and I have to say if you were impressed with BYIT, Closure will completely blow you away.
