A Quick Guide on obtaining the Dot Eater Achievement.

For those who are having trouble obtaining the Dot Eater achievement, I thought I'd throw in some tips to ease it abit. Just in case anyone needs it. ;)

First, select Chapter 1. From this menu, go to settings, adjust lives to 5 (better chances of course. :P) and changing the difficulty to easy. A notice will mention High Scores not being saved, proceed. (Settings do not matter in obtaining this achievement.)

Prelude:
You don't even have to move. Once your ship is active, just let all the enemies fly their path and you won't get hit if you're still. Do not panic when they get close. :D

Chapter 1:
Beginning
A bunch of different ships will appear. Easily dodge them. Eventually they'll stop at the top and start to fire their respective polarity. Switch to that color to absorb their color bullets.

Middle
You'll then dive down to the surface and a set of both Black & White will appear before a swarm will appear on the top portion of the screen. There are many ways to do this (including being in the middle of all of them) but an easy way is to just absorb the shots. The shots start Black.
Two big ships of each color emerge. Each ship will start shooting in clusters before shooting in a comma , formation. Absorbing is key here. You can also do what I did and stay one color and dodge the other.

Five ships will emerge (3 Black, 2 White), then a huge White ship will appear and shoot a beam at you. Adjust polarity to White and absorb.

Then two ships (One of each color) will appear and rotate around the screen borders. The trick here is to stay on one corner section of the screen. I perfer the top-left section. (Pretend there are 4 sections, or squares, of the screen, one in each corner) The ships rotate around, shooting sideways. Little ships will appear in the middle flying downward. Keep in your section, rotating around the ship and switching polarity after they cross each other.

Boss
The Boss has little Black Orbs on the top corner of the screen while he shoots White bullets at you. Stay White and dodge the Black. He will then use his shield and shoot Black and switch the Orbs to White.

He will then toss grenades of each color (in sets). Time your switches so you don't get frustrated when the next set explodes. He will also do a polarity switch with the Orbs to shoot both White and Black. He will then shoot homing missiles at you in White. The grenade process and missile process is repeated again. Do your best to dodge, absorb (as needed) and stay alive until the time runs out.

Quick Notes:
*As most of you will probably have the urge to dodge instead of absorb, remember that absorbing is a key feature you will eventually have to master. You can absorb one color and keep dodging the others, of course. :P
*When doing this achievement, if you have to pause, REMEMBER TO PRESS START, NOT A! If fire is A, you may accidently fire a shot if you choose to resume game with A instead of Start.

~Thanks to Korix for these extra notes!
*You can still die and get the achievement, but you cannot continue. (Continue note verified by Alexaundre)

*If you're having trouble doing it alone, play with a friend who is shooting. Let them clear the enemies, chaining the stage if he wants, and just sit in the bottom corner yourself. There'll be a lot less eating/dodging necessary. I (Korix) just did it with a friend; he didn't have the achievement, so I chained the level (only 79) and he blocked for me when the boss came. We finished with an A+ and he got the boo-doop.
Hopefully this rundown will help you guys and gals abit. Enjoy! ^^

I know you can YouTube the videos, but text tips don't hurt either. :p

This is very well detailed! I'm positive this will be an excellent resource for people attempting this achievement, thank you for sharing with us and I myself will plan on trying out this strategy guide when I get the game. Thank you very much, GaMeReVX! ^_^

Edit the first post and add that you can die and still get the achievement.

Very easy to get, set lives to 5. If you've played this before it should only take 2 lives at max.

This is far from easy for beginners.

Another idea for the post: Play with a friend who is shooting. Let them clear the enemies, chaining the stage if he wants, and just sit in the bottom corner yourself. There'll be a lot less eating/dodging necessary. I just did it with a friend; he didn't have the achievement, so I chained the level (only 79) and he blocked for me when the boss came. We finished with an A+ and he got the boo-doop.

You can probably just copy all that.

Excellent tips, certainly helped me alot! Also, if you get a continue, this achievement will not unlock, as I have found out as when I started I was pretty terrible at this.

I'm not sure why people are saying that this is the easiest achievement in the game. You're telling me that shooting your way through the level, not having to worry about nearly as much dodging and eating in the process, and getting rid of the boss is easier than dealing with all the mess that's on the screen because you aren't shooting and then actually surviving against the boss for the full 100 seconds? Getting the achievement for defeating Tageri is easier.

People have their opinions. Maybe easier for others maybe not.

I see it like saying that it's easier to walk away from a gunfight without having one yourself.

Dot eater is an easy achievement and yeah, it is pretty much the easiest achievement next to completing the first stage. Grades is a different story. I guess that goes better with multiplayer.

I see it like saying that it's easier to walk away from a gunfight without having one yourself.

Or you could see it as someone who is a pacifist, and using strategy to complete a level rather than gunning it out.

Hence, difficulty.

I wouldn't say that it's easy, but I did it on my first try. I also played the heck out of this game on the Dreamcast though.

well its just a matter of skill, for example im very good at switching polarity, but im bad at getting anchor hits in triggerheart exelica

and for some people, side scrolling shooters are just easy, my brother and i used to beat gradius 3 without dying when we were 12 but couldnt beat a kingdom underfire game for our life (not counting CoD thats a joke)

and does it matter if you think its easy or not as long as you get it? if so and you think its easy then go get portal and get all golds on all the levels, that should be a challenge for you :P

great guide btw, very thorough

Despite your helpful guide, this thing will NOT unlock under any condition for me, and I know I'm doing it properly :(

I got this achievement at the first try... not difficult, not even so easy...
by the way, this game is truly very difficult but amazing!
I'll try to get a full 200 but I definetely need more skills... :)

I tried to get this in Local Co-op, and it will NOT unlock if you try it like that. I passed all criteria when doing this (multiple times) but I never got it.

Then I switched to single player to see if I could get it that way, and it unlocked first time.

My guess, local co-op gives you the same grade as your partner, so you will not get dot eater if they shoot. It probably does work over Live, since you have two separate consoles, but I haven't tested it and can't vouch for it.

Good tips in this mini-guide. I would say it's only moderately difficult to get this achievement.

I tried to get this with a friend of mine first thing. He was firing and I was not. It scores you the same, so you BOTH would have to get dot eater. We went back and redid the first level and got it first try. (We both played the crap out of the dreamcast version though, so we are decent, so this was easy)
