Story behind the scar on Rios?

When it showed the beginning of the Army of 2, in 1994, Rios didn't have the scar on his face, but somewhere along the ride, something must have happened to him. I'm near the very end, but nothing was really said in the story line. Is there some kind of story behind how Rios got that scar on his face?

Yes there is, but there is a graphic novel that supposedly explains this, and why Clyde is called smiley.

I believe the graphic novel takes place in 2001 according to wikipedia.

Clyde is called Smiley because the edges of his mouth have been sliced up to his ears.
He is a sadochist (sp) or something along those lines, self cause injuries etc.
