View Full Version : Anyone Play a REAL Instrument?

Rock Band drums don't count here boys and girls :P
I've been playing guitar for around 6 or 7 years now, and I love every aspect of it. I can play only a few songs, opting to play a cool riff every now and then, or just noodling on it myself. I'm trying to start a band and I sing as well as play. Right now I just want to do a classic rock cover band, doing stuff by Rainbow, Boston, The Who, The Scorpions, etc. Too band I can't find anyone locally to help me out, because nobody wants to do cover bands. Personally, I love classic rock and that's why I want to share it with everyone.
So, anyone out there play guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, flute, mandolin, banjo, church organ, ribcage, violin, recorder, harmonica, etc. Post in this thread!

I started off playing guitar about 7 years ago and then about 5 years ago started learning bass and drums. Now I'm studying to be a sound engineer at college and in September I'm going to LIPA University (Paul McCartney from the Beatles' University) to further my sound recording knowledge.

I play real guitar and have guitar hero. I can play most songs on Guitar Hero on actual guitar. I find Guitar Hero alot harder than actual guitar.

thanks for the reply.
I borrowed GH2 from a mate and thought about buying a real guitar.
Mainly to learn how to play but also to maybe help with the game, but if it seems harder than the real thing... not much point.
I will just have to buy the game and practice.
and practice some more

It's not necessarily that GH is harder than real guitar, it's that they're both completely different things. While one could put in upwards of 100 hours trying to perfect their GH skills, the same amount of time isn't going to have the same effect on real guitar. There are much more concepts to get down and the fact that there are much more frets on a real guitar than on the controller makes it much more difficult.
They're both difficult in different ways.

I still play guitar, which I have been playing for about 8 years now. I've also been playing Drums for about 4 years, and Bass for 5 years.

I play the guitar, and I gotta say some songs are easier on the real one than in Gh. The real one is more fun anyways but I guess you have to put a lot of effort to both of them to be good.

I can play a little guitar. Quit lessons after about 6 months(ish?), and I can play a few acoustic and a few electric. I play the guitar left handed, but I play guitar hero and rockband right handed lol

I don't find it that hard to play GH, mainly because I'm a "backup" guitar player. I don't do much lead guitar.

As far as GH3 goes I need the pad for lead guitar and enjoy playing bass or rhythm on the guitar.
As far as real life goes I don't take lessons but i dabble on the piano and teach myself a few things like the New Born intro for MUSE, fantastic stuff.

I play guitar in real life, and of course have played the bass at times.
I also play the harmonica (I need to get a new one, my F key one bombed on me so all I have is a C....not as good for the blues, ya heard?)
Used to play the drums a little bit back in the day, but pretty far removed from that, and I was never very good.
I imagine if I picked up a trombone, I would be able to assemble something that sounds similar to a song (played it for about 2 years, then stopped).
Very little experience with the piano as well.
I'd like to someday get a banjo, as well as a sitar, and try my hand at those.

Wow, I'd be totally crap then at a real guitar seeing I suck at Guitar Hero. I've always wanted to learn and get good at an instrument but I geuss I just haven't got the patience. Which brings me on to another question; how long has it taken people here to be able to play their instrument at a reasonable/high standard?

Don't be disheartened - my brother is nothing special at GH, but a good guitarist, wheras for me its the other way round :P
I don't play much anymore - I used to be decent enough but I didn't practise so I kept regressing :(

I have been playing bass guitar for almost 5 years nows. Why? Because everyone plays guitar. So I figured I would try sommin different. Me and my buddy also picked up an irish tin whistle for kicks and are quite good at it. Even though it is essentially a glorified recorder.

I've been playing Guitar for about 5 or 6 years now. I own a Vingate SG, black and red. I'm a lefty as well so they're hard to come by (in this small town I live in, anyway)
I've been playing Bass for about 3 or 4 years and have a black Ibanez that I recently picked up as well. I can't find any good left handed basses here so I learned to play the bass upside down.
All self taught. And I can play most songs by ear now, unless the solos are difficult.
I find it funny how hard some songs are in Guitar Hero but are really easy on real guitar. IE: Muse - Knights of Cydonia or Yeah Yeah Yeah's - Maps
But yeah, real guitar ftw.

I play guitar/bass and I'm in a band at the moment. We have a few gigs around our city, we are definetly the next Iron Maiden;)
I found guitar/bass on guitar hero/rock band ALOT easier than in real life, but also not as much fun as jamming with a real band. Yet, I found singing in rockband because you're not in front of a giant crowd.
Oh yea, I used to play piano and trombone back in the day:p

I've played guitar for a few years now, and I can play a bit of piano too. Although to be honest, I actually find Guitar Hero easier than playing real guitar, not that I'm crap at real guitar, but Guitar Hero is really easy. The first time I ever played a Guitar Hero game was at my friends house on GH3 and I scored 93%. I can't remember what song it was, but it wasn't one of the easy ones apparently.

Well, I played the alto sax for two years in the school band, and now I'm finally in the midst of upgrading from Rock Band to real life shredding. I've got guitar lessons scheduled to start after April vacation, and I'm looking at an Epiphone Les Paul online for $444. Any suggestions?

I've played real drums for about 6 years.
Double bass and bass guitar for 4 years.
And I'm a jazz trumpet player since I was 7 (I'm 19 now) - I didn't play jazz when I was 7 btw, I just sort of made farting sounds for like 6 years.

i play (all pretty good, without sounding bigheaded)
guitar - started about 13 years ago when i was 12
bass - started learning when i was in a band,
drums - pretty much the same as the bass
piano/keyboard - my nan started to teach me when i was about 6 or 7
violin - when i was about 15/16 i fancied a girl who was in some orchestra thingy so i went along and learnt to impress her, it worked
Double Bass - thought it would be pretty straightforward after the normal bass, it was
also learnt the chime bars, triangle and recorder when i was at primary school, i used to also sing when i was in the band
yup im a musical god
