First of all do you know what a combo kill is? It's performed by hitting X and then right when your sword hits your opponents, tap X again. It will change camera angles just like a Counter Kill (RT + X when opponent strikes) but don't use RT! You will know when you get it...

An easier way is to just go to Masyaf and go to the battling ring and do the combo kill tutorial until the achievement is unlocked. This way you'll know that you got the credit for the kill without having to keep killing guards in the cities not knowing if you did it right. It took me around 5 minutes to achieve.

For combo kills, when you attack and an enemy blocks, hit X as soon as your sword makes contact. If you did it right you will get an animation followed by an instant kill. Remember, that it can't be a glancing blow, they must still be guarding when you pull it off.
If you want the achievement, go to Masyaf and do the training there. You can get your 50 combo kills even though you don't kill anyone.

Wow, I didn't know that trick in Masyaf, it would have helped. Although you can cheat on this achievement, I wouldn't recommend it really. You need to learn this, it's a key battle skill and it makes fighting Templars and regular guards a LOT easier(in my opinion).

I would recommend that you use the Masyaf trick/cheat to reach this achievement. Combo kills can be quite useful in combat, but all too often you're attacked by a group of guards that may not be patient enough for you to attempt the combo. And combos aren't always guaranteed (your first swing needs to be an overarm swing to raise the success probability). I've found the best means to handle a large group of guards is to simply let them do the attacking and counter everything. My favorite way to fight off a large group is to climb a building 2+ stories...as they climb up to your level, grab them and throw them from the building. It's always funny to see 20 crusaders piled on the road.

Also, I found them much easier to do after unlocking the "dodge" ability and using them in Tandem.

Even though you aren't killing them it counts?

Yup, because you're still successfully performing the move. I personally think it was stupid by Ubisoft to allow you to get it this way; it takes ALOT more skill performing combos agaisnt real guards, and therefore would of been a worthy achievement, instead of another easily achieved.
