UK, February 4, 2008 - Spider-Man 3 villain Venom may be getting his own spin-off film, according to IESB.net.

The site reports that Marvel is moving ahead with a new standalone movie based around the dastardly alien symbiote, and has recently met with several "A-list writers" to pen a script.

There has been no official word from Marvel yet, although the studio are in a position to develop new projects after they signed an interim deal with the WGA last week allowing scribes to write for them until the strike resolves.

Apparently the rights to the character have recently moved back to Marvel from New Line, although it is unclear what control - if any - Sony have over Venom, since his character appears in Spider-Man 3, which they own.

Hmnn... Venom as the main character? I wonder how they could create a story for that. But if that's true, I guess it could be worth watching.

Not sure how the story for that would go...considering venom is a villian, but even if the story was bad id still be up for watching any movie with venom in it. Although if they do manage to get a decent story line going this could turn out to be a pretty good movie.

Venom isn't really a villain. He's kind of an antihero. I'd say they should have Carnage in a Spider-man film first, then they could have a spin off of the Venom Carnage comics, where Carnage is having a 'baby', just like Carnage is the 'son' of Venom. Carnage tries to kill his 'son', and Venom tries to stop him.

Sounds good. Hope it doesn't bomb because this has lots of potential.

I like venom a lot in the comics... but I didnt like how they cast Topher Grace (i think thats his name)as Eddie Brock in Spiderman 3 at all. Totally unbuff and scrawny, and for some reason never said "we are venom!" when he had the symbiote.

I think it would've been better if he just stayed as Eric. (That 70's Show) Spiderman 3 was still a good movie it just felt that they added Venom in around the end. I wanted to see more of him witch many other people wanted too, sadly no.

I really hope those are A-list writers, hopefully they won't screw this up.

Yeah, this should be awesome if true. At least Venom will get some more screen time this time around.

Could be amazing if its done right. Like no Topher Grace or Sam Raimi. It should stay true to the comics

Good news if they pull it off. Bad news if they don't !

Personally, I hope that they get this spot on. Venom is not only my fave character from the Spidey stories, but he is also a damn popular character amongst comic fans in general !

Fingers crossed that this becomes something good......

Venom is my favorite character in Spiderman Comics. I would be nice if they could have Carnage to.

Originally, director Sam Raimi (http://imdb.com/name/nm0000600/) vehemently opposed having Venom as a villain in the film, claiming he hated Venom's "lack of humanity," but Marvel producer Avi Arad (http://imdb.com/name/nm0032696/) convinced him to include the character, explaining that Venom had a strong worldwide following. Raimi eventually came to appreciate the character, based on writer Alvin Sargent (http://imdb.com/name/nm0765091/)'s script and actor Topher Grace (http://imdb.com/name/nm0333410/)'s performance. However, to keep Venom's appearance a secret, he claimed during the film's casting and production that he hated the character, and had no intention of including the character in this film or any subsequent sequels. To make amends, he then treated the audience at the 22 July 2006 San Diego Comic-Con to the first public images of Venom in the film, albeit with unfinished special effects.

Immediately after Spider-Man 2 (http://imdb.com/title/tt0316654/) (2004) released, Ivan Raimi (http://imdb.com/name/nm0706898/) wrote a plot for the third film in two months. According to Sam Raimi (http://imdb.com/name/nm0000600/), the film initially dealt with the concept of heroes with a dark side, and villains with a sympathetic side. As well as dealing with the "triangle" between Peter, Mary Jane and Harry, the Sandman was made the film's official "villain"; the screenwriters made his character, merely a petty criminal in the comics, the real killer of Ben Parker to further Peter's guilt over his uncle's death. Raimi wanted another villain in the film, and eventually settled on the popular villain Venom to please the fans. There was also the addition of a rival love interest, Gwen Stacy, to complicate personal matters. However, with all these additions, the story became so complex that Alvin Sargent (http://imdb.com/name/nm0765091/) considered cutting it into two films, before realizing he could not create a successful intermediate climax for the third film to lead into the fourth.

As the quotes point out, Venom was added late, the plot was written in two months, and the director right off the bat didn't like Venom. I thought he was a decent villian with a lot of human conflicts. In the end he just totally lost control of himself. It's too bad he died, the New Goblin alliance was interesting though.

Edit: Those Raimi brothers are fricken famous... Bruce Campbell is mixed up with them too.

I agree with whoever said that carnage should be in a movie first or be in this movie because carnage is the coolest character in the spiderman series. The only character I think I liked better was the hobgoblin.
