View Full Version : Disc Tray Issues

My roommate's 360 (the one I use) has been having issues with the disc tray for a few months and it's starting to get annoying. Sometimes it won't open just by pressing the button, we have to remove the faceplate and use a paper clip to open it manually using the little "hole". While this works fine, it gets old after a while and I was wondering if any of you have had the same issue and whether or not you found a fix for it, or at least what the problem is so I may come up with a fix.

You could take it back to where you bought, I'm sure they'd give you a new one.

If you have the warranty that is.

I do believe it's a launch console, not sure if it even has a warranty anymore. This is also the third unit (disc reader) according to my roommate, as the last two stopped reading discs after a while.

You could get it repaired professionally, there are plenty of non-Microsoft websites that offer such services but for a price. I say that if the console still works, then get used to it and find a novel way to make the situation better. You could make a small hole in the faceplate where the hole is for the paperclip, then you won't need to take the faceplate off each time and only at the expense of a small hole. Or just trade it in and get a new console, could be risky if they decide you tried to scam them and get pissed off a bit.

Just out of curiosity... does your roomate or yourself repeatedly close the disk tray by pushing on the tray rather than pressing the button on the console or selecting "Close Tray" on the dashboard?

Actually, funny you should say that. He and I both have a pet peeve about about that, so we never do and never have, but one of our friends did it ONE time when we weren't paying attention and it has had this problem ever since he did that.

I'm more posting this for my roommate's sake than anything, as I will be getting my own 360 in a few months. Just curious, thanks for the help so far guys.

sounds like the motor is sticking or going bad, I'd say check google for a replacement..Or as ZEF said dremel a lil hole and have just a little bit of the paperclip sticking out so all you have to do is push it in...

just an off the wall question... but it's related so I'll post it here.

But, what is the best drive out there for the 360 right now?

I've heard it's the BenQ drive. Is that right?

I think my xbox has this problem, too. All that I do is give it a little tap on the top of the console (more like a smack) and it opens.. never thought of a paperclip.. hmm..

Mine sometimes won't open, either. But that's only when there's no disc in. Then I just wiggle the front of the disc tray with my finger, and it usually opens.

That was the problem w/ my first 360. No tips except hope it's under warranty and the paper clip is all I could do too.

My old 360 did it, but I pushed the drive tray in like that a LOT more than once. I've learned my lesson though.:Bounce:

My 360 has a similiar problem, it will take it a few times to close the tray for it to begin reading the disc. I'll close it and it'll just pop out and say opening but get stuck unless I jiggle the disc tray, I do that a few more times and eventually it works, not your problem but similiar.

I have the same problem with my 360 now and I need to manually "pull" off the tray when it fails to open up. It is obviously a mechanical issue.

Next time it gets stuck, try punching it very lightly on the disc tray. It should open. I've heard of problems like these before.

Thanks for all the replies. I did eventually figure out a much easier way than the paper clip trick. If I just apply some pressure to the disc tray when I push the open button it pops right out every time.

I found a little bit of an easier way of doing it, when it wouldn't pop open, I just found a spot like to the3 left side of the tray where the eject button is, I would stick my finger nail under that and pop, it would open...I'm not sure why but it worked every time. This was on my first 360 and I dealt with it for about a year. Until I bought an elite.

mine doesnt open if there's no disc. my workaround: always leave a disc inside

I have this same problem, and the same solution of leaving a disc inside. But there are plenty of third party repair guys who could repair this. Go to a TV repair guy from the phone book and he probably can. Or a college student with an electrical engineering degree. This would void your warranty.
I had this same problem with my original xbox

Did you read the rest of the thread? The 360 works perfectly fine and I found a really easy fix.
