View Full Version : Fox vs EA - x360a Bites Back, Sign the Petition, Tell a Friend
Well the Fox and EA scenario has been in the x360a headlines today. It started with a reporting of a typical news agency spreading propaganda about gaming and ultimately ended with Fox giving EA the cold shoulder with the old "contact the PR department" line. It definitely got a few of our backs up and ruffled a few feathers. It seems as if Fox don't care what they report and we believe in reporting truthful facts so we decided to start a petition to unite ourselves against the propaganda that these agencies continue to spread. So we stand here, side by side with EA and toe to toe with Fox. Show your support and sign the petition and then tell a friend.
The petition is can be found here and states... (http://www.petitiononline.com/EAvsFox/petition.html)
"We ("the gaming public") demand that Fox ("the negligent news agency") retract their non-sensiical, unfounded, untrue and unprofessional comments regarding EA's ("the victim") subsidiary, BioWare and its hugely successful title Mass Effect and it's so called "sex scene"
For too long the media have abused their power in this day and age and made gaming a scape goat. Today, we stand up and DEMAND we are counted!! So for a result against the political propaganda against gaming, sign the petition and tell a friend!
The Story - http://www.xbox360achievements.org/news/news.php?id=645
The Backlash - http://www.xbox360achievements.org/news/news.php?id=656
And here comes the support!!"
Get involved guys for a noble cause. It only takes a minute.

lol I haven't been able to hear the interview/report but if it is anything like that article posted earlier in the forums about Mass Effect's pronographic sex for teenagers, it is just a slippery slope arguement leading the the apocolypse.
I think the sheer revenue of the gaming industry can back itself up and point out that it is a major industry that can bend rules on decency for the sake of profit just like music, television, and movies.
Yes, I realize the information presented against Mass Effect are complete lies and fabrications.

I believe Fox crossed the line here. They chose to not research the game before even thinking about releasing the story and their only backgrounds of gaming were playing on the atari which does not count. This has gone on long enough and Fox news needs to take responsibility for their ignorant actions.

You know I thought it was completely retarded myself but I don't feel the blame should be solely put on FOX News. Granted it was their network and program, but most of the issues I have are with the crackpot psychologist they had on the program arguing how Mass Effect is "Luke Skywalker meets Debbie Does Dallas". Even the anchor admitted when she watched some trailers she didn't see much of anything that would be offensive.
In the end though I agree that FOX News should come out apologize for having some skank come on the network to talk about a game she's never played before.

It's pretty ignorant to rant and rave about a sex scene that is completely avoidable in the game, and when the "reporters" (and I use that VERY loosely) have never even played it, that's just idiotic.

That Cooper lady is just upset because her boyfriend spends more time gaming than he does with her. Also, the ESRB ratings can be found on the FRONT of the box. They were acting like you needed to break out an electron microscope and pull a "Where's Waldo" on the back of the cover for an hour before actually discovering the rating and content.

this whole story just makes me so infuriated! these people clearly have just had the information that there is some kind of sex scene involved and been told to make a news story out of it as ridiculous stories about computer games get idiots who know nothing of games watching the news and boosting their ratings. its just poor journalism to not fully research what your discussing. The whole conversation between their panel of morons simply involved saying "yes we all no nothing about the game or computer gaming in general but if it potrays sex in a mature rated game in any way then its obviously pornographic and evil". its just fucking retarded. mass effect = star wars mixed with debby does dallas??? thats just a ridiculous statement. the sex scene is actually done very tastefully and is a well potrayed conclusion showing how sex should be something that happens eventually after the building of a loving and involved relationship!
as for that so called psychologist, she is purely an idiot trying to promote her book sales by jumping on a band wagon of twhat she thinks will agree with the thoughts of her retarded target audience. Sex, violence and so many more things that kids shouldnt see are potrayed every day through TV, cinema, themes in music and over the internet so why is gaming treated differently in a negative way? its the responsability of a parent not to let their stupid little shits get hold of things they shouldnt see. if a kid is able to go on the net to look at stuff they shouldnt i dont think its the mass effect sex scene they'll be looking for to satisfy their sexual curiosity! porn is flooding the net so i hardly think mass effect is a threat to children as to what they can see on the net.
this network needs to take responsability for their inaccuracies and put things straight. this is fox for gods sake, home of all your prime time filth! example one family guy! i love it but that programmes so fucked up. it regularly displays themes of insest, strong sexual situations (ie peter and louise on the couch stoned and louis asks brain and stewie if she should let peter do her in the ass!), beastiality, peadophilia (sp?), rape, violence, alcoholism, drug taking and god knows what else. its just so ridiculous and hipocritical for fox to turn round and treat a very tastefull sex scene as something so bad when they contribute to the twisting of childrens perceptions of things on a daily basis based on their logic!

Signed. Me and my friend were just talking about this. Talking about how EA should sue them for flat out lying to discredit their product. It would be great if such a huge company like EA took a stand because it would send a message to everyone who is constantly messing with the video game industry. Video games are just like any other form of entertainment and it's about time we had the respect we deserve. This is the perfect chance for EA to step up and say "we are here to stay, so don't fuck with us".

I don't exactly support EA (I think they rush things too much) but I signed simply because Bioware deserves much, much better than this.
I commented "The accusations made by Fox and their affiliates were simply absurd. The Media is meant to portray truth and allowing completely fabricated "facts" about a game that was obviousely unresearched is a direct violation of that purpose. The true question is which is worse, the stupidity or the ignorance?"

It's amazing how this idiot thought she was going to just come on national television and get some free pub for her book and instead lit a fire under her own ass that she can't possibly comprehend.
Hell, a 30+ hour game experience gives me a chance to see 30 seconds of side boob? How about watching 30+ hours of prime time FOX television programming and tell me when has more "questionable" material.

I have to admit, I didn't watch the full segment in the news section but after recently watching it. I have even more hatred for Fox and it's so called "exprts".
Let's weigh the facts here:
In fox's favor:
1) The game does have some slight nudity (just like the rating says on the back of the box... "Partial Nudity" which includes some ass)
2) Games are a little too accessible to children who are underage.
In Mass Effect/EA/Gaming in general's favor:
1) Fox states full frontal nudity: False
2) Fox states interactive sex scenes: False
3) Fox has an "expert" when asked if she's done the research herself (actually played the game) her response is a rather jubilant "No!" Oh yes... research-backed opinion my ass.
4) Fox again has three "experts" that also have not played the game in question. One stating he can't even control a Barbie in his 6 year old's game.
5) One of Fox's other "experts" states that "The people who rate these games need to have their head examined" even though the most recent games she remembers are Pac-Man on the Atari.
6) The above "expert" asks why it wasn't given an AO rating? Well, nobody seemed to answer that question. AO is given to a game when it features FULL frontal nudity. Something Mass Effect is accused of having when it doesn't.
7) (I think this is the best evidence of all) Fox repeatedly plays portions of the "sex scenes" in question covering about 75-85% of the whole scene which simply don't support the accusations at all. The viewer is lead to believe that there is more substance to the scene than there actually is. I believe it's the dumbest thing Fox could do as anybody who's played the game and watched the scene could easily point out that the accusations are false.
I think Fox bit off a little more than even they can chew with this one and once this spreads to the farthest reaches of the gaming community and the people who make game in general, they'll have no choice but to admit that they were wrong. Or at least have no comment which would be just as good because it would prove they aren't big enough to admit failure and it would be like crawling into a little shit infested hole of defeat.

I signed it, not because of anything about EA, but because it was wrong for Fox to base the report on obviously false premises and then refuse to apologize and retract it when confronted with the truth.
My impression of EA's corporate image has decreased dramatically over the last 10 years or so, but my objection to the principle involved is greater than my feelings about EA. It would be equally wrong to deliberately spread inaccurate stories about Fox, the channel, or the people involved in the report.
