I just noticed this recently while playing Mass Effect. I went to the guide menu and saw my profile said "Away" even though I had been actively playing Mass Effect for at least an hour. Has this happened to anyone else? I was worried about it affecting achievements, but one unlocked so I guess it's just specific to my 360 with this game only.
Also, I keep my 360 upright to reduce overheating. Lately the green light for the "controller 1" port has been randomly switching from the top left position to the top right position. I'm on my 5th 360, so problems are nothing new to me, but I haven't experienced this yet. Maybe I should start preparing for funeral #5.
Not sure if this appeals to your situation, but I know when I've been away from my 360 for longer than, on average, half an hour, then come back to game, my status will still be set to away even though I'm gaming again.

It's just a small glitch type thing. Mine always says that and so does everyone else a lot of the times. You can manually just fix it by setting it to online, but I really don't care anymore since it happens so much.
Keep your 360 horizontal for less over heat, vertical isn't the way to go.
I'm on my 6th 360, so I know where you're coming from with problems. I wouldn't worry about the controller though. Only real signs of death are constant freezing and put the damn disc in a 360 console page (numerous times I should say).

this may sound stupid but u dont just have it set to away in your personnal settings do you?
if not if think about looking into custormer support but dont go as far as giving your 360 back
