To get the achievements for max carnal/max heroic, you need to completely fill the gauge that shows up at the end of the level. It adjusts by a given amount based on how many Carnal/Heroic kills you got, Thanes saved, Heroic objectives completed, and a few other things dependant on the level; whichever has the lower point total is subtracted from the higher, then the final tally is added to your score, at least that's what it looks like it's doing.

Basically, to max out the Carnal gauge, you can't just be finishing with a high Carnal index; you also have to be avoiding using Heroic Storm, saving Thanes, and being nice in general; having 20 Carnal Kills won't help you much if you also did 10 Heroic Storms. The opposite also holds true.

Hope that helped, and anybody who knows how the gauge is actually working instead of making half-logical guesses based on what it looks like(as I do), please share. XD

I've heard that you have to kill bosses without using Carnal to gain heroic awards but how do I do it...the ones I fought so far require me to use Carnal to hit them with pillars and such so I can't do it any other way.
Is it because I'm only in the beginning or am I missing something?

Nah man, in some boss fights you can use "Heroic Storm". When you do your Thanes get a boost in attack power, the more the better.
It's useless for things like Grendal but In the Ice Queen I went up SOOOOOO much Heroic...
Just use Heroic/Carnal when possible.
The worst part of the Heroic Achievement is the bit with The Relic.
You have to use it there and just pray your men kill more than you.

A note to those going for Heroic Index (especially on Legend). On spots like Defend the Relic (and a few others) your best bet really is to try and find an enemy to attack that swings at you so you can dodge, upping your life bar and activating more heroic powers so your thanes can do the majority of the killing. It's quite easy to max the index and your powers if you make sure your guys are alive and boosted for any big fights!
