For example:
I find people into Final Fantasy SCARY - you may not
I find large eastern block women SCARY - you may not
I find N'Sync SCARY - you may not
I find walking through a dark, decrepid building swarming with human debris, holding a flash light and knowing I have to go through that doorway up ahead with a very good chance that someone (or thing) is waiting for me, hell I can hear them coughing SCARY - you may not

Try this:

At night, open the door to the back yard and place your chair so your back is to the outside, right at the opening. Turn off all the lights, use your 5.1 or surround head phones and play a level you've not done before........that's SCARY.

my basements scary enough. I am in the middle of a room in a rocking chair/ game chair and there are about 2 open storage room/halways behind me.

The Burnt out school level is the scariest imo. Had me jumping on my sofa! :D
Quite possibly the scariest game I have played since System Shock 2 and those zombies (anyone that played that game will remember the moans and wails!)

I'd say it's the creepiest game I've played... i think it's better than RE4 in a way. Monolith did a good job and making me frightened.

I found Doom - back when it first came out in the 90's - scarier than I find Condemned. I jumped a couple of times when someone came at me, but that was it.

The game is scary at times, not so much because of the content (although the mannequins are pretty freaky at first) but more because of the tension building. You will hear enemies long before you can see them, and you could always use better weapons or more ammo. So they build the tension, then some crackhead comes racing at you.

There's nothing really horrifying in this game but there are moments where things catch you off guard and startle you. I gave it a 3.

There's moments in the game that freak me out, just because they dredge up associations with things that have occurred to me in other situations... that, plus the overall tension level, knowing that something is going to be around the corner, hearing the grunting and panting as some unknowable thing lurches towards you - but is it coming from the front, or the back? You never know - and you scramble for something a little better than that 2x4 you picked up earlier... yeah.The game's freaky. At least, I think so, and I pride myself on being a tough scare.

As for comparison with Silent Hill, I'd say I found Condemned more disturbing than 3 and 4; about on par with SH1... and nowhere near SH2. But I worship SH2, so take that for what it's worth.

Its scarey at time, its more of a jumpy scarey then a WTF is going on scarey that silent hill gives you, and its not freaky like project zero / fatal frame is. also as you play threw the game a 2nd or 3rd time trying to find all the birds and stuff you know whats coming and it takes some if not all the shock away. still i think its a gr8 game got it when it first come out, cant w8 4 number 2

Its been many months since I played this but thought I would go back and get 4 AP I missed. Sitting in bed in the dark playing this was almost as scary as the first time I played. Thank heavens I am playing on easy for the points or I would be getting kicked out of bed by my wife for jumping too much.

I completed it a month ago, it is scary. Its more subtle than some other horror games but still scary. I have to say the section in the store with the manikins closing in on you really freaked me out to the extreme.

I didnt find the first few levels that bad. When I hit the shopping mall level I was jumpy the whole way. If i knocked something over i would jump. Was spinning to look behind me and everything. Was the mindset I was in I suppose. Had just finished watching a horror film which wasnt scary so was in the mood to be scared and indeed I was. Havnt turned the game on since hehe

This game is one of the scarier ones I've played better than F.E.A.R. but not as good as Silent Hill those games are just awesome. The thrills don't come from cheap horror stunts it comes from tension it just grows on you over time, like a blanket slowly choking you (Yeah that was a sucky analogy)

Honestly, I compare all horror games to Silent Hill 2 just because it scared the piss out of me. (not litterally)

So I guess I'd give this one a scary at times, just because it surprises you and catches you off guard.

I think it tops the Suffering, Silent Hill and Manhunt on my Spook-o-Meter. I'm only starting level 9, but the Department store freaked me out most so far.

Yes, go for it, and don't worry it's not as scary as people claim it is, I play most of my games at night, and my light is always off, and I have no problem, not scared.So just enjoy it.

I've been playing this by myself with the lights off and there's a few scary parts. But the department store, holy shit the mannequins creeping up on me scared me so much when I first saw them sneak up on me.

I find it very scary. I completed the clothing store level yesterday and I can honestly say I've never been so scared in my life. Damn those mannequins, damn them to hell.

It can get pretty tense the first time through, but once you know the level it's not so bad.
