isnt the book protraying the catholic religion as a facist army? Thats why they took out the catholic relation out of the movie for that reason.

The book is called The Golden Compass...and the Trilogy is called His Dark Materials.
The second book is called The Subtle Knife and the third is The Amber Spyglass

They actually left in the catholic religion being corrupt in the movie last i heard. It is one of the major themes throughout the series. Its not really against the church, its more along the lines of that its corrupt. It also is saying that the Catholic church wants everything to be how it wants it to be and nothing else.

All together its saying how corrupt the Catholic Church is and that all they care about is there own progress forward.

I was under the impression that the film/book was promoting atheism, which apparently angers those craaaaaaazy Catholics. I haven't seen/read any of it and probably won't but it was on the news last week when I was half asleep.

They'll never let up on films these days, whether it is witchcraft in Harry Potter or blasphemy in the Crapinci Code.

The books are against religion in all forms and depicts them as over controlling.

Lyra's father hates the Church and uses the power from seperating a child's soul from it's body to open a portal to another world, his goal is to destroy God.

The thing that gets me is that not only the Catholics were cheesed but I've read of several atheist groups coming out against the books as well for not being atheist enough...or something.

You just can't please folks these days.

I haven't seen the movie yet but their gripe is that the movie is not true to the book. If you read the book, you would know this movie is going to suck. The writers or director changed it so I'm guessing it will actually be good.

The original book ending was like WTF... Like Pullman knew he was going to write more books so left it hanging. Also, you can't read the books out of order or you will be completely lost.

Haha....actually you can read the Amber Spyglass without having read the first two books (At least thats what i got from it) because of the story in it is different than the others in a way that it doesnt really rely on the others for support.

Having seen the movie and read the book the movie does not deviate too far but leaves a happier ending (skips the last 3 chapters) in case New Line decides not to proceed... its still a cliffhanger but its at least a happier one than if they left the real ending intact. Also as far as anti-religion it is only that they have people who do not want anyone to question what is doctrine (catholics) and the little girl questions the magistrate who want to control all thinking and actions within the world and do not want them to know what dust is (what connects multiple worlds). Meanwhile the kids all have "demons" which are animals that talk to and share their life force.

Should have commented this on my other post but he actually did know there would be more books when he began... he wanted to write a darker version of the chronicles of narnia and lord of the rings that didn't have a happy everything is perfect with the world ending. Also you can't read any of these series out of order (or any series of books that is connected) without getting lost. Lastly the book and movie are both great though to each their own.

I just saw the movie and thought it was awesome. I am going to pick up the book today and start reading. The movie definitely pushes views against conservative thinking... saying it is wrong to just believe things because people tell you that they are true. Nicole Kidman's character tries to make the main character stop her investigating by telling her to just trust that some things are better off left alone. This is upsetting to some extremely conservative religious groups who actually believe that the bible should not be questioned and people should not be seeking out other truths. However, i think it takes movies and books like these to show those groups how wrong they are. If only they would look into the messages of these ideas instead of ignorantly arguing against them....

I'm an atheist who was just happy to have something counteracting the Chronicles of Narnia. The chronicles are just as pro-religious as His Dark Materials are anti-religious. And to be fair, the atheist themes in the books can EASILY be applied to most major religions.

She lies to people through the game and has a compass that says the truth.
Funny!
