Insomniac and Sony, sittin' in a tree.
Okay, so it's not as if Sony owns the development house, but Insomniac is responsible for two of the PlayStation 3's biggest exclusives: Resistance: Fall of Man (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3140599) and Ratchet & Clank Future (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3157407). So it's fair to say that the two scratch each others' backs nicely. Why the loyalty? Well, Insomniac's Chief Creative Officer Brian Hastings feels that as the most powerful machine, we'll be seeing advancements in the PS3 technology for years to come.
In an interview with VideoGamer.com (http://www.videogamer.com/news/15-11-2007-6896.html), Hastings says that "the amount of action we're able to put on the screen at 60 frames per second really dwarfs what we were able to do a year ago at 30 frames per second. What's most exciting is the way things are headed right now I think we'll see just as big a leap from our second generation engine to our third as we did from the first to second."
As an example, Hastings points out that Sony's Cell processor allows developers to put more operations running on the Synergistic Processing Unit (SPU) and moving it off of the Power Processing Unit (PPU). Moving more operations in turn lets devs put more on the screen at once, and he predicts that this and other Cell-enabled power will lead to "major leaps each year in what people are able to do with the machine for at least three or four more years." This serves as a good explanation to anyone who gaped at Ratchet's vast cityscapes.
