If you are looking at the Tree Spirit's 'Face' where you talk to it, North is behind it. So after talking to it run to the bridge that is behind the tree and follow the path around, you should find the machine easily.

I missed the generator, and just ran through the mist to get the Leaf. Then afterwards, I went back and turned off the generator.
