Welcome to the site! For a beginner, I'd say these are pretty good! I'm just a beginner, myself. Feel free to ask anyone for help. And as many others will tell you, always play around with filters, brushes, and renders to build your creative library. ;)

You seem to know the basics and know what you want to get out of the sig, Id advise that you check out some tuts and before I had CS3 I used GIMP so feel free to check out my Gallery to see GIMP's full potential ;)
