change characters in free mode

how can you change characters in free play?
i don't know how to change them, in other lego games you could just rotate them with Y.

You must complete the Story Mode first.

i did finish story mode, i'm at the joker funland and i need a character that can destroy golden things.
but i only have batman and robin to play with and i can't rotate them(Y) into another character like in the other lego games.

Hold Y and it'll bring up the character menu.
