No backtracking?

I just completed the volcano palace, but I missed a Life Drop and a few other things. I went back to retrace my steps and found that the door to the temple is locked again. Are you ever able to go back, or do you need to collect everything on your first attempt?

You can't backtrack, so yeah, you have to do it over again. But luckily, you haven't gotten that far, so it's better to start over now and to miss a life drop at the end of the game.

That's really lame. I'll never understand the logic behind locking completed areas.

Just make sure you make a save at the start of every area and you won't have to replay much. You get 12 slots so use them all :)
