Recently, I got caught up in the standard Marvel Universe (616) and am current through the end of Dark Reign. In the Ultimate Universe I had read some random sets, so I found a chronological listing of everything and I just started Ultimatum. Probably be done with the Ultimate Universe through the end of Ultimatum) in the next week or so (about 20 issues left), and I was gonna switch back to 616. Can someone recommend a good place to pickup where i left off and start getting current again?

I stopped reading 616 around the same time. I did read ultimate titles after ultimatum. They mostly suck but there isn't a lot of them and they have started bringing previously thought dead characters very recently.
I did read that X-Man was back and I seen Dark Reign for a couple issues but then he disappeared but sounds like he's back in a monthly so I'm going to pick up from where he comes back in and see what I read from there.

Read the Marvel Civil War story arc that is intense and also read Marvel Zombies. These are both great story arcs but extremely long and confusing to read because they crossover so much.

Hope this helps ;)

in this order.

civil war.

world war hulk. (including aftermath stuff)

secret invasion (as world war hulk aftermath leads right into this)

siege

fear itself

that would pretty much bring you up to date, if your avoiding single person story lines and you want the main marvel storyline those are them that i would i reccomend, in that order i'd suggest, pointless reading a few different ones at once or questions will be raised later on in others :p

edit:- noticed you mentioned ultimate universe

i'd say read

prelude to death of spiderman, does all the run up.

then death of - ultimate spiderman

amazing read.

My favorite was always the Onslaught Series in X-Men, its where Onslaught was created from the soul of Professor X and Magneto, when the dark part of Magneto's soul leapt into its counterpart in Xavier's soul. This took place when Xavier wiped Magneto's mind at the conclusion of the Fatal Attractions storyline. but that is just my opinion :D

After seeing The Avengers I wondered "who is Thanos"? Picked up Infinity Gauntlet and I have to say I really enjoyed that one.

I god I remembered that and all the characters couldn't beat him and they all looked worse for wear especially Wolverine. Long hair, long nails and wearing a part of his mask like a bandana.
