"Molyneux declares Fable: The Journey 'definitely not on rails'

"My name's Peter Molyneux and I made this horrendous mistake." With that emblematic phrase, Lionhead creative director Peter Molyneux kicks off a hilarious public service announcement he created with the help of OXM UK (http://www.oxm.co.uk/30071/news/molyneux-fable-kinect-demo-a-horrendous-mistake/). According to him, the Fable: The Journey (http://www.joystiq.com/game/fable-the-journey) demo he showed off at E3 2011 gave the impression that the game is "on rails," an idea he's quick to dispel.

Apparently, the team at Lionhead working on the Kinect-based Fable title decided to remove navigation controls from the press demo, the same snippet shown during Microsoft's presser, effectively putting the game on rails and giving everyone the wrong impression. "I will just say on record now that Fable: The Journey is definitely not on rails," he specifies, even going so far as to ask for journalists' signatures before they exit the demo room. If you look really hard, you can spot one of our own among them. It's like Where's Waldo with squiggly pen marks!

"Molyneux: Fable Kinect demo a "horrendous mistake"

Video: Lionhead boss insists 'it's not on rails'

Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux has spent E3 clearing up misguided impressions (http://www.oxm.co.uk/30071/molyneux-fable-kinect-demo-a-horrendous-mistake/29971/news/fable-the-journey-is-not-on-rails/) of his Fable: The Journey demo in the Microsoft keynote, and we've recorded a video to help him explain.
The demo showed how you can steer your horse using Kinect to control the reigns, and create magic using spellcasting gestures. It didn't show any open-world exploration, so everybody assumed it was on rails - something Molyneux is keen to clear up, and has had visiting media attest to.
We'll let the man himself do the talking."

Peter Molyneux Quits Microsoft And Lionhead

It comes with great sadness that English computer game designer, Peter Molyneux OBE, has decided to part ways with Microsoft and Lionhead - but after 15 years, Molyneux feels the time is right to move on.
The gaming world was dealt with a blow today, as the man behind iconic titles such as Fable, Black & White, Syndicate and Populous declared in a Twitter post (https://twitter.com/#%21/pmolyneux/statuses/177367286859051008) that he was leaving the development studio and relinquishing his role.
In a statement made to video games blog, Kotaku, Molyneux said:
"It is with mixed emotions that I made the decision to leave Microsoft and Lionhead Studios, the company that I co-founded in 1997, at the conclusion of development of Fable: The Journey.
"I remain extremely passionate and proud of the people, products and experiences that we created, from Black & White to Fable to our pioneering work with Milo and Kate for the Kinect platform. However, I felt the time was right to pursue a new independent venture."
As one of the gaming industry's key figures, Molyenux helped revolutionise the 'god game' genre - and according to The Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/gamesblog/2012/mar/07/peter-molyneux-leaving-lionhead?newsfeed=true), will be leaving Lionhead following the completion of Fable: The Journey.
"As co-founder of Lionhead and an integral part of Microsoft Studios, Peter was the creative visionary behind the blockbuster Fable franchise, and one of our most passionate and influential developers for the Xbox 360 platform. He has made an indelible mark on the games industry and we wish him all the best of luck in his future endeavours." said Microsoft.

The recent X360A preview makes it sound more like it is on rails than the original preview of the game when it was first announced. -.-

Thats great news, I hope he is right. And if it is on-rails they can probably expect a shit load of bad reviews. I really want to like this game, so hopefully they learned from the complaints from Fable III and make a game that they can be proud of.

I'm trying to figure out if this is an "OMG they hate it, quick fix it" or a "Peace out, try fixing this one" move.

I'd move on too, i mean c'mon he must know Fable The journey is going to be complete gash, they've ruined the series by putting it on kinect.

So much for "not on rails." Definitely on rails.

Not gonna lie, not only did I expect this to be on-rails regardless of what Molyneux said, but I never really cared all that much to begin with. The game is perfectly fine as an on-rails adventure. Hell, even the previous Fable games are fairly linear, despite having the ability to walk around places. Fable is about the story to me anyways, and The Journey definitely did a good job with that.
