So, anything Blu-ray goes here.... Except HD comparisons. Leave that for the comparison thread ;)

Recommended films, players, problems, questions, etc, etc.

I'll kick off proceedings....

So impressed with this technology so far, but Pearl Harbour, a film I was never too keen on looks AMAZING on Blu-ray!! Definitely recommend it ;)

Anyone know of any decent free software as well?

Just watched TMNT the other day... got some pizza to go along with it to completely enjoy the experience. Picture was really nice... my wife kept stopping every fifteen minutes to say how great the picture was. Hard to judge on the sound, we don't have the sound system setup... we just moved in to a new apartment and we're a bit timid to blast out the neighbors at this point. Only downside was the special features... nothing really worth watching. Plus they were all standard def quality from what I saw. But still, who really needs special features on a film like this. It's pure nostalgic fun for me.

Was it just me or was Casino Royale really boring? I fell asleep during a few parts of the movie. I'm intrigued by how sharp and detailed the movie was, but that wasn't enough to keep me awake. Lack of action and the story didn't keep me interested either. I pumped up my Sound System for nothing. It was a serious waste of electricity, considering I played it on my PS3 too.:p

Saw 300 Blu-ray last night.... Wow! So much better than standard DVD. Breath taking in every way.

I'm still waiting for my 300...
Amazon.com has an expected arrival date for me...around the end of August. The movie came out when again? I'm truly missing out. I just purchased a pair of Boston Acoustics speakers too. I can't wait to try 300 out on my new setup.:woop:

transformers not coming out on blu-ray is a huge disappointment. i would by an hd-dvd player for the 360, but then i would want to get a 360 with HDMI to take advantage of 1080p.

OK, so I recently watched 300 on Blu-Ray and I have a question to ask.

At certain scenes in the movie, are there suppose to be a bunch of tiny dots in the background? I believe it's only in 2 or 3 screen shots. Is this caused by my 720p/1080i setup? If I were to max it out to 1080p, would there be this problem?

Other than that, the movie was fantastic!

I believe it might be the grain effect that they purposely added to the movie. Could that be it? Cause otherwise I have no idea :p

How did it show up on your Laptop, Webbie?

My friend and I both DL the HD trailer of 300 and we both saw the same "grainy" background. My buddy told me that's how the movie was produced. Kinda sucks...:(

I own near 100 blu rays.. and over 100 of the "other" format.

I must say, the best looking blu ray has got to be both the Pirates movies. Those and open season look astonishing!

I love my blu ray player.. never sees any games.. but still!

OK, so I deleted my last post here to make an update.

Here is a quick Blu-Ray Movie Review with yours' truly, Jdm7399.;)

I finished watching Fantastic Four last night. The Sounds and Visuals were Excellent!

The movie was overall, Clean. Very crisp and detailed. New York never looked more beautiful. I can also say the same about Jessica Alba.;)

The Sound could not be beat, especially the seen where the FF4 were on the bridge. Another great scene was when the rocket was chasing Human Torch, which lead to the final battle with Dr. Doom. Two great scenes to really test your Surround Sound.

This movie is now, obviously old with a sequel soon to be released on DVD. It's a great buy at around $20 or you can simply rent it for a day to experience all the excitement in your own home.

Well, that's it for me. I'm not buying anymore HD DVDs. Whats even worse, is that I JUST bought the Harry Potter movies, and now, I can't even finish the series in one format. To hell with the HD format war, the only casualty is the millions of consumers that get rear-ended because of it.

As far as I know I AM LEGEND will still be released on HD-DVD since Warner claims to still support the format until May.
Regardless, it's sad news for the HD-DVD camp. Things can always change though. It's a shame Warmer never followed through with their TOTAL HD movies; Both fromats on one disc.

Well, I hate to say it.... But I am happy of this news. I chose to back Blu-ray in the beginning and am glad that I don't have to fork out for HD DVD now (although I would have and still will do if there is some uprising and turn around but I doubt it).

Won't change anything as far as the gaming will go but may have an affect on this new 360 that Gates was supposedly going to announce, especially now Toshiba have questioned their loyalty now

Well, I just checked hddvd.org this morning and New Line is also going Blu-ray. As of yesterday, they were still neutral. Not a big surprise considering Warner owns them... but it still hurts nonetheless.

Because of the Warner announcement, the HDDVD camp has cancelled their CES press conference. Hell, as of two days ago, Warner was going to be attending the HDDVD conference & not Blu-Ray... so this whole thing has me shaken up. The future doesn't look so bright now for the HDDVD camp.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to trying to pull this Warner Bros knife out of my back.

I think if anyone put their money on a format to win 2 years ago (or whatever it was), that they would have chose HD DVD. I'm really surprised that Blu Ray is winning, and most definitely will win. I thought since HD Dvd had the name, it would come out a victor. But I guess people are looking for the better technology and something new, and blu ray fills both of those shoes.

I'm happy about Warner Brother going Blu. I'm also extremely happy that Blu Ray is winning because now I can return my HD Dvd player that I carelessly wasted $170 on.

The funny thing is, the WB/Time Warner proverbial jumping ship situation was a shock to HDDVD as well. They had a plan of attack and simply 48 hours before it was going to launch.....WB dumps them. Of course they are going to reschedule. If they want to save their format, they better postpone and get a new strategy. Getting up on stage and saying, "After 48 hours of complete speculation and turmoil, we have no fucking clue what we're going to do. Thank you and goodnight." (<-- that made me laugh)

Let's remember one thing. This is the internet folks. Universal and Paramount are big supporters. HDDVD is dying, it isn't quite dead. Let's just see what they say in the next couple of weeks. They still sell 35% of the market, that is billions a year. Remember, my first post on this when I said they won't quit if they're making money. Thats all this has ever been about from the beginning. It makes me laugh when people say Blu-Ray FTW!!1111!11 or HDDVD FTW!!1!!!111. Honestly? Let them battle it out so all of us make out with buy one get one free deals at Best Buy. Because competition saves us money in the long run. I want them giving out their product for free for years....let them spend advertising dollars instead of being the only option for people. If one company wins out, all of the deals and savings stop. Look at DVD....how many buy one get one free deals do you see on a yearly basis? Nuff' said.

I just hope, for the consumers sake, that when one of them dies off [which will happen], the other still living one won't jack up the prices and make it so only the super rich can afford it.

But that's probably worst case scenario...:p

Everything I have seen in bluray so far is just amazing. I recommend getting a ps3 as a bluray player. It comes with a movie plus you can send in to get 5 free movies. Very very naaace(Borat).Seems like everyone is getting on the bluray band wagon. Maybe HDdvd needs to add a hdplayer in the 360's to start selling more.

Universal Could Back Off HD-DVD Exclusivity

Warner Bros could be the beginning of the end for the format war.
By Steve Watts (http://www.1up.com/do/my1Up?publicUserId=5557327), 01/11/2008

After Warner Bros. decided to exclusively support Blu-Ray (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3165249), many media-watchers (including our own Sam Kennedy (http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=8560155&publicUserId=4561231)) were calling it the end of the war between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. And like dominoes toppling one after another, it's looking like the consumer confusion could indeed be coming to a close.

Amid swirling rumors of Paramount's defection to Blu-Ray's camp, the eventful Consumer Electronics Show saw Microsoft saying it wouldn't rule out a Blu-Ray drive (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3165321) if the format won. Today, Variety (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117978760.html?categoryId=1009&cs=1) reports that in addition to Paramount's escape clause giving them a convenient exit, Universal's HD-DVD exclusive commitment has run out. Though both Paramount and Universal have pledged support to HD-DVD in the coming months, neither is legally bound to continue supporting the format. This means that either, or both, could jump ship at any point, which Variety notes would instantly end the format war.

Toshiba, as major backers of HD-DVD, committed to marketing the hardware throughout 2008 at CES. But as Variety points out, retailers are going to be less and less likely to devote shelf-space to a format that fewer and fewer companies are using. By 2009, there may not be a war to speak of.

I figured JDM would love this. I just had the BR Rep visit my store last week. I received 5 free BD's from her and I took the training course. If you take the training you get a choice for one free BD afterwards. The selection isn't great, but hey it's free. The catch is you need to be in the industry. Just put you work as an EBAY seller and it works lol. Enjoy.

Just order 300, Blade Runner, Casino Royale The Guardian, Gone in 60 Seconds, The Island, 5th element, Corspe Bride, Planet Earth and Black Hawk Down.

Anyone got any other must-own BR's- in terms of spectaular graphics and extras etc etc?? Personally I dont see the point of something like Cars on BR as its not got the huge action scenes etc and would rather just DL it :p

Well high definition is almost better than real life. As long as you are able to focus on the TV screen, the picture will always be crystal clear focus relative to the subject being shown. No mater how far or small, the picture will be perfect when you look at it.

Only just seen this post Parker so sorry for the stupidly late reply, but your best bet is probably Ebay to be honest. I'm not sure if the same applies to the U.S, but in the U.K you can get the older films such as Open Season pretty cheap, and the new films about £10 off. So yeah, try Ebay :)

Microsoft were originally going to sell HD-DVD players for the 360, then they scrapped it after the Blu-Rays came out... Its Sony technology, and Sony is one of Microsoft's biggest competitors. They may or may not...

Saw 300 Blu-ray last night.... Wow! So much better than standard DVD. Breath taking in every way.

When I saw that title, I thought that they made a Saw + 300 spoof. :p

Im getting 4 Blu-Ray DVD's at christmas, and about 5 for my birthday.

Im a big fan ;)

I just saw the dark knight on bluray, and it looked INCREDIBLE! Just one thing I don't get, after I saw dark knight, (on my friends PS3) we started playing CoD5 and I gotta say it looks much better on 360 than on the PS3, so my real question is why do the games that are on bluray discs not look as good as the movies or 360 games?

I had a question about blu ray I was hoping someone could answer. I got a blu ray player for Christmas and a few discs. I was watching the dark knight which was amazing btw and then I watched some of firefly. I noticed that firefly had the black bars on the left and right hand side of my screen. Now I know with blu ray the top and bottom bars will still appear for some movies but I thought the left and right ones would be gone...anyone know why they are still there...or if they are supposed to be there? They were not on the Dark Knight at any point. If it helps the aspect ratio for firefly is 1.78:1.

Edit: Nevermind, I'm an idiot. Apparently someone changed my output to 480p...once it was changed back to 720p life was grand again.

I'll heartily recommend Rambo on Blu Ray, excellent film accompanied with excellent visuals.

Quick question, anyone know if they plan to release LOTR on Blu Ray? Great films that would be even better on Blu Ray.

As for Lord of the Rings, they will eventually be coming out on Blu-ray but unfortunately a release date hasn't been announced yet.
