Introduction

Alan Wake American Nightmare has 2 different modes: Story and Arcade. The achievements are essentially split between both. There is only one achievement based on difficulty and that is Survivor in Arcade Mode. There are a good amount of collectibles which are the manuscripts. They are the only collectibles you need for an achievement. Luckily, you can replay scenes to grab the ones you missed.

Step 1: Story Mode

First off, play Story Mode and collect the manuscripts. This will also prepare you for Arcade mode. You'll know the best ways to kill enemies and have unlocked supply chests from the collectibles. Also, you will be familiar with all enemies. The story consists of 3 acts which each visit the same 3 areas. This is 9 chapters total and it doesn't take all that long to complete the chapters. While playing, the only achievement you must worry about is for finding all manuscripts. Everything else is story related. You will have a total of 100http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg once you are finished.

Step 2: Arcade Mode

Now that you're done with story, it's time to tackle the wave based mode. You'll have to unlock all of the Nightmare versions of each level by unlocking the stars. To gain higher ratings you must score extremely well. After you have unlocked all of the Nightmare modes, play the level you feel most comfortable on and try to gain "Survivor". You will also need to play one level without using any type of guns or weapons (flare guns you cannot use either). The Arcade Mode achievements will likely be the harder of the batch. You must earn 24 stars in arcade mode to unlock all Nightmare levels. You must dodge and fight your way through. Try to kill enemies as fast as you can to get the most amount of points. The difference with Nightmare mode is that the enemies take more hits and there are no breaks or "waves" happening. They just come in constantly.

Step 3: Mop Up

If you haven't obtained every collectible once you finished the game, you may replay scenes to finish them off. Also, you will be replaying arcade mode a bunch. If for some reason you are extremely good at the game and did everything quickly, you may just be missing the "kill 2000 taken" achievement. In which case, you can now grind out to finish the game.

Conclusion

This game will take a good amount of time to complete, and the arcade mode will be frustrating. Some will wonder why online cooperative arcade play isn't an option (Barry would be nice). Overall this will be a satisfying completion. The quality matches the actual game "Alan Wake".

Escape the Taken to the motel.

Story related and can't be missed.

Act 1: The Mechanic

This will be your first achievement in story mode. After killing a couple Taken at the start of the game, you will be told it's sometimes best to run. Do as suggested and run to the checkpoint light shown on the screen. Heading to the garage which is the next objective will unlock the achievement.

Rewrite reality for the first time.

Story related, can't be missed.

Act 1: The Mechanic

After investigating the garage and talking to Emma, you will be tasked with finding the 3 objects. They are all easy to find since indicated on your mini map. Once you obtain them and talk to Emma again, you must go "rewrite reality". Go to the spot on the map and put the CD in the boombox, valve in front of the oil (turn the valve) and then the battery in the switch (turn on switch)

Make sure Dr. Meadows can take another look at the skies.

Story related, can't be missed.

Act 2: In Progress

After meeting Dr. Meadows for the second time, you will then have to complete an objective which all that is required, is to pull a switch to secure the coolant tanks. After you pull the switch, the achievement will unlock.

Rewrite reality for the last time.

Story related and can't be missed.

Act 3: United

Once you finish the last scene this will automatically unlock. Watch through the entire credits to watch one more scene.

Survive until dawn in any Arcade Mode level.

Arcade mode is essentially a "wave" based game type. Enemies will get more difficult and increase in quantity as you play. To gain this achievement you must survive the whole level for 10 minutes. You can get this achievement along with "Skill Beats Gun". See that description for an easy way to get both.

Get a six-minute survivor streak and over 100,000 points in an Arcade level.

In arcade mode you not only have to get a ton of points, but also not get hit for 6 minutes. Within the period of not being hit, you must score this 100,000 points. You can go over the 6 minutes for the points of course, just can't be touched. This can be one of the most frustrating achievements in the game!

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/achievements/2175/UPmbK-Q=.jpg (http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../game/alan-wake-american-nightmare/achievement/63578-Enter-the-Nightmare.html)Enter the Nightmare (http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../game/alan-wake-american-nightmare/achievement/63578-Enter-the-Nightmare.html) 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.png
Unlock all of the Nightmare Arcade Mode levels.

There are 5 levels each with a Nightmare Mode version.

Cemetery
Ghost Town
Oil Field
Caves
Trailer Park

The levels will all be locked except one when you first start out. As you gain stars, you will earn the levels. Your goal is to hit 24 stars between all 10 levels. That is 24/30 possible. You will need 3 stars on every regular level and 9 more between the Nightmare ones. You will have to get a 3 star on at least one Nightmare stage. The score you will need to shoot for is around 40-45k specifically for Nightmare. Just try to kills enemies as fast as you can to gain the most amount of points. You don't have to survive the full 10 minutes to get 3 stars, but it sure helps (bonuses and the sun kills remaining enemies). Just keep on your feet and always look behind you. You will have to get very good at dodging. The more familiar you are with a level the better you will be. So if you are failing, just keep trying until you start perfecting it. Do not worry about any other arcade based achievements until you have unlocked all levels. By this time you will be better at it and know what to expect.

Survive an Arcade level using nothing but the flashlight and handheld flares.

To survive an arcade level, you must complete the full 10 minutes of it. Waves of enemies will come at you but you cannot shoot them. You will have to utilize flares and your flashlight to keep them away. The best thing to do is to keep away from the initial Taken that spawn in a level. This means you'll be running from and dodging the same Taken the entire time. This will simplify the achievement.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/achievements/2175/UPpa2tI=.jpg (http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../game/alan-wake-american-nightmare/achievement/63580-Survivor.html)Survivor (http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../game/alan-wake-american-nightmare/achievement/63580-Survivor.html) 30 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.png
Get 70,000 points in any Nightmare Arcade level.

First you must unlock a Nightmare Arcade by gaining at least 12 stars within the available levels. Nightmare is a bit tougher. Enemies take about double the shots to kill them. Also, there are no waves. They just keep coming without you having much time to prepare. Because of this, you should get a lot of points. This is suggested after you have unlocked all Nightmare levels and know which one you are best at. You will need to know where everything spawns, and stick close to an ammo drop. So make your rounds early to pick up flares, guns, and flashbangs. Then camp around at an ammo pickup.

Take out two Splitter spawns with a single shot.

A splitter is an enemy who physically splits into two enemies or more, creating a clone of itself. It basically multiplies. What you need to do is kill two at once with one shot. The first time you see this enemy is the perfect time to get the achievement. When going for the item near the train tracks during the "Find items for rewriting reality" objective, this enemy will jump out from the door of a building you are supposed to enter. The game will inform you of this new enemy. Shine your light on it and to make it easier, let it split again. Now you will have 4 enemies to shoot at. Take your shots. If your achievement doesn't unlock, just reload your last checkpoint. It will put you right in front of the building again. You can always get it later, but it's nice to get it out of the way here.

Find all of the manuscript pages.

Manuscripts are a type of collectible in this game. You read them for some extra story content. You can keep track of these pages by selecting "Collectibles" from the main menu and going to "Manuscript Pages". It will show you the 3 areas in the game which you can check. Collecting these will let you unlock guns in story mode and some things in arcade as well. While in the game you can press :back: or via the start menu look at what collectibles you have obtained. You can replay chapters from the main menu to pick up the ones you have missed. If you do this, it's suggested to do it after completing the game so that you don't over write your checkpoints. The manuscripts will appear different depending on which Act you are in, so that is something to pay attention to if following a guide.

A complete guide can be found HERE (http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/showthread.php?p=4905941#post4905941).

Defeat 2,000 Taken.

This is accumulative between both Story and Arcade modes. Taken are the enemies of the game (human overtaken by darkness). You will likely get this while finishing up your achievements in Arcade Mode. If not, just keep replaying until you get it.

If it's useful enough to include in your roadmap I am doing videos of getting three stars on each arcade map. Only got Cemetary and Ghost Town uploaded so far but more are on the way.

The playlist for them is here:

your information for the "enter the nightmare" achievement is incorrect. there are five regular arcade mode levels. the last nightmare mode is unlocked with 24 stars. if you got 3 stars on all of the regular levels you'd still need to get 9 stars from some combination of the nightmare levels.

Is there some other requirement for Poetry in Motion? Because I just beat the Oil Field and got a streak of 6:20 and a score of 126850 (34th in leaderboards) and i did not get the achievement. Also did it on cemetery and got over 6 minutes and the 14th score on leaderboards of 118900.

This happened to me yesterday. I got 113700 on Oil Field, survived for 7:30, yet i didn't get it! I then played Trailer Park and managed to not get hit AT ALL with a score of 118950 and it did unlock. No idea what causes the glitch but i would suggest just going for it again.

I just got 27th on the regular Cemetary level, with a streak of 7:14 and a score of 112050. No achievement.

I tried for HOURS just to get this; those damn grenade throwing bastards always screw me up; even if I don't get damaged, my multiplier still gets ruined, and I'm not wasting the time figuring out if that screws the survival streak up or not.

Does anyone have any clue why this achievement isn't unlocking for some of us?

EDIT: Just tried it again on the Cemetary... survived for just shy of 9 minutes, got roughly 108000, and no achievement. Seriously. WTF.

Apotheosis

I figured out why it isn't popping up! You have to have the streak actively going as you reach 100000. So you cannot simply just get 6 minutes then get hit and achieve 100000. You must be undamaged for six or more minutes at the time of reaching 100000 points.

... Damnit. So, unless you're among those who have upwards of 130000+ on the leaderboards, you pretty much have to survive the full 10 minutes without getting hurt.

But... Res1dent Nemes1s above mentioned that he survived the Trailer Park without getting hurt once and had over 118000 and still didn't get the achievement. =/

No he says that it did work for the trailer park. Try wasting the first 3 or 4 minutes by running around and then start killing around then and don't get hurt till sunrise. It should be easier that way since you get extra points at the end and you don't have to keep the streak going all the way through.

Ahh, must've misread it. XS

I guess I could give that a shot. I just hate wasting time in the Arcade levels, they're too boring waiting for time to run out. =/
Makes sense, though, especially for the Nightmare level. By the time you hit the 7 minute mark, there are too many of those grenade-using bastards to dodge easily if you're in a small enough space.

The solution is simple for the Poetry in motion achievement. How many of you have actually reached 100,000 BEFORE the timer runs out? I have managed to get 98,000 then ended up with a score of 128,000 on oil fields with the 6 minute streak and not reaching it.

Upon scoring 100,000 points BEFORE the round ends, (as in you have yet to receive your bonus) You will net the achievement.

I can confirm this. This is what happened to me.

Cemetery was where I did it as well. Easy map, though use the Hunting Rifle or Pump Action Shotgun with the Revolver. SMG wastes ammo, Semi Auto Pistol is too weak and the Combat Shotgun is terrible imo.

Just got it myself a moment ago (finally!). Just shy of 120000 without getting hit on the regular Cemetary (17th on the leaderboards at the moment). I tend to use the Pump Action Shotgun with the Revolver before switching out the pump action for the Combat Shotgun. I had 91000 before sunrise and still got the achievement after the Taken were eliminated by the sunlight.

If anyone can time themselves playing story mode while using the collectibles guide, that would be a great help. Just kind of keep track of long it took you to complete it. This way I can have an average. My time taken is skewed of course because I was working on the manuscripts. Thanks ahead of time!

I started yesterday morning about 10AM PST and ended about 5PM PST, So using your manuscript/gun guide until it stopped, I winged the rest but because the final chapters are shortened it didn't take as long as it initially did. So for me roughy 7 hours to get all manuscripts/guns.

I am still working on the final arcade achievements IE 70k in nightmare, But if you don't suck.. lol This is at best a 20 hour game. 10-15 with GOOD skill.

EDIT: I figured I should throw in the fact that I am mostly just playing arcade levels casually because they are a lot of fun. So even though I have 100% completed the story and most of the achievements within that initial 10 or so hours of story+arcade the replay factor for me is great, I love this series.

Yeah I'd also say something like this (missing a few too):

Story Mode (Achievements): 10h+
Arcade Action (Achievements): 15h+

So all in all for the 200 :gsicon: completion a good & realistic: 20-25h+

Hey Tyger, just to let you now, I'm near the end of my completion (180 :gsicon:) and still don't have this achievement. :( The last one that I need. So here is my method if you want to "somehow" boost this:

Load up ACT III: UNITED (REPLAY SCENES) and play until you get to the point where you have to "Destroy the dark fountains"! Advance forward and trigger the very first fountain. The Takens will come indefinitely, always in threes (two normal and one big axt/hammer guy). Fire away. If you running low use the Ammo Box nearby, next to the safe haven at the building with the tv inside. The Ammo Box replenish itself every 60 seconds. Make sure you pick up the ASSAULT RIFLE on your way up or the road up the infamous SAWED-OFF SHOTGUN for one shot kills (if you can).

Beware if you "REPLAY SCENES" you only start with a pistol and loose everything you have collected so far (equipment). So it could be a little tough with the two GIANTS in the beginning, but doable.

Note: Doing this method right now. Works good so far. Also, I've noticed if you press :start: the auto-save icon appears in the lower left corner in case you have to take a break.

Edit: CONFIRMED!!! Got the achievement this way just a few minutes ago, yay!

3 is definitely too low. Poetry in Motion is difficult and Survivor is tougher. Good for you if you found it easy but I am proud to have just gotten those 2 achievements. This seems like a 6 or 7 to me
The original Alan Wake, which I actually would agree with you if you were to call it a breeze, got a 4/10. This is definitely not easier than that one

If anyone can time themselves playing story mode while using the collectibles guide, that would be a great help. Just kind of keep track of long it took you to complete it. This way I can have an average. My time taken is skewed of course because I was working on the manuscripts. Thanks ahead of time!

Story run through took me just under 6 hours, and this was without a manuscript guide (I only missed one). I'd say no more than 5 hours with using the guide. Most of them are very easy to spot without that much searching.

Story mode took me around 5 hours without using a guide and I also only missed one.
I also took my sweet time listening to the radio and watching tv.
You could probably rush through it with a guide in 3 hours or less.

Thank you for the guide.

"Survivor" was the most annoying achievement.

I have found an extremely easy way to get the Skill Beats Gun & Glorious Dawn Achievements using an exploit to access a safe zone:

Once in the safe zone, as shown in the video, you can wait the 10 minutes to collect your achievements.

I had a chance to get about 15/24 stars so far and I only had to play a couple levels twice in order to get 3 stars (well, Nightmare mode I get 2/3). Anyways, I should update the guide with better detail once I have it all myself.

Tyger7, the first thing I look for in a guide is the Missable Achievements section. You should add it to the guide. Thank you.

My mistake, somehow that line got deleted. There aren't any.

Thanks for the guide, really helpful.

OT: Why is this forum called "Alan Wake's Night Springs" and not American Nightmare ? Seems like that could cause confusion!

Brought it up to Admin when the game released, hasn't been fixed yet. Sure it will eventually.

Difficulty affects achievements? So I should play story mode on nightmare or not?
