How many players needed for MP?

My apologies if this has been asked before anyone says it i did use SEARCH but it didnt come up with anything!

How many players do u need to start MP and to get the achievements?

How do you do this? I'm trying to play with my son only but keep getting thrown in with a bunch of other players. Are you not able to play a private match like you can in Hot Pursuit?

A race can start with as little as 2 players but there is no private match option in the game so you either have to get lucky and get paired up with your partner/group or just go at it and hope you get paired with bad players if your trying or the bonus wheel achievement.
