characters weapons

I know that you can only keep 8 weapons per character but what i want to know is if you can discard a weapon. I tried several ways to do so because i'm at 7 weapons on one character and what to make sure i can get the level 4 weapon but i don't see a way. If i go ahead and keep a 8th weapon and then come across a better one will it let me swap them out?
