Yes I realise my title is misleading but I'm a complete noob with this saga..

Ok, so I know that this game is a follow up to Oblivion but I've never played Oblivion (apart from once where I played like 15 mins and got stuck :P) but I'm wondering what will I have to know/understand in terms of gameplay/storyline before playing Skyrim to allow me to have the full experience every other player will have, having completed Oblivion.

Thanks for your help :)

Well, if you really want to know, then visiting http://www.uesp.net shouldhelp you as there is a ton of information on there. You might want to go through Oblivion again, and get Shivering Isles dlc for it. Best dlc I have ever played. I have not answeredd directly I know, but this link(hope it works) should give you all you need to know.

Just an overview I'm looking for. I don't have the game so can't play it.

Well, Skyrim doesn't continue from the story of Oblivion, so you can play Skyrim without having played Oblivion. I don't know very much about how the story of Skyrim will play out, I'll find out when I start playing...but we'll start out in prison again and have to find our way out to start our Skyrim joureny.

yeah Skyrim takes place 200 years after Oblivion. I would be extremely surprised if there were any significant references to Oblivion in Skyrim.

EDIT: all the stories do tie together but unless you are crazy about the story it doesn't matter to much, I'm sure most of Skyrim lore and important details will be given to you in game.
