Ok this has NEVER happened to me before, at least that i know of. And i'm pretty darn sure. Every day i wake up for work at 7. As you all know i'm living in boston out of my suitcase so i don't have an alarm clock, all i have is my cell phone. So every night i set the "once alarm" feature for 7 a.m. It has been working for weeks, but in the past two days...the phone alarm has not gone off in the morning, making & my housemate late for work. I have been seriously perplexed by this. Last night i even went to bed EARLIER in hopes of being able to hear my alarm and wake up.

Now here's where it gets weird. This morning when i woke up (by my roomate/coworker banging on my door) i realized my phone didnt go off again! But when i looked for my phone, it was on my bed..open (i have a flip-phone). Then just a few moments ago, my girl texts me and was like, "why did you call me at 5 in the morning two times these past two days."!!!! WTF!

Apparently i have been calling my girlfriend IN MY SLEEP! Sleepcalling! This is why my phone hasnt been going off. I have absolutely no memory of using my phone at these hours, and my door was locked so no one else was using it. Its not like i could just roll over and accidently land on the "call" button, you have to open my phone to press anything.

This is seriously freaking me out, im calling people in my sleep...wtf. :(

Okay heres what you do. Tonight have your house mate stay awake. (Playing x360 or something.) You fall asleep, he stays up all night then tells you what happened.

It worked for me. Turns out I was playing Halo 2 in my sleep alot...

I know you live in the States dude, but 12xBudweiser every night will do that to you..it's not water bro, it will make you forget good and bad things...

Common ST's got a good idea, but I'd say you should be the one playing all night...you won't miss your alarm this way...;)

if you think "sleep-phoning" is bad you should hear about this. Few month's back i got suddenly awakened by the sound of my car starting up........... i was the one starting it. At about 3:30 Am i got up out of bed (sleep in my birthday suit) walked through the house, unlocked the front door (left it open), walked all the way down my drive-way to my car parked on the road, unlocked it, got behind the wheel and started it up in my sleep. Had to try to hide my junk with my vehicle registration as i ran my ass back in. i don't think anybody saw me but i haven't really asked any of the neighbors about it.

Sleep driving. Very nice.

St1nky, what I would do is put the phone on lock so that you can't press any buttons during the night. Just a suggestion though.

I've heard of people who even eat in their sleep.

How do you think Jared got so fat?

There are two solutions to your woes, one involves cutting off your hands. You won't be able to sleep call anymore, although you may find other things slightly more difficult. The other involves locking your phone into a mini-safe that you need a key for, or keeping it in a sealed plastic bag in a pot of boiling water. Reach for that phone and you are awake!

What if he presses the two buttons that unlocks his phone?

I have another option. Dont sleep near your phone.

You guys missed a big point. I need my phone for its alarm to wake me up in the morning! Plus there is no "phone lock" feature on my phone because it is a simple flip phone. I would have to open it do to anything and it wont open on its own. and i have to keep the phone near me

Pick up some rubber bands and thumb tacks, wrap the bands around your phone with the thumb tacks sticking outwards through the rubber bands all over your phone. if you try to call someone in your sleep, you'll be awakened by a slight sharp pain, but nothing too harsh :p

Serious suggestion btw.

Sleep walking, or doing other things similar to what you're going through is not uncommon at all.

Basically, what's happening is a chemical imbalance. There's a chemical (don't ask me what it's called) that essentially paralyzes you when you go to sleep. It's not uncommon for this chemical to misfire, causing one of two states. Sometimes the chemical fires too early, causing a disorder most commonly known as sleep paralysis, which basically causes the body to fall asleep while the mind stays awake. This is most common in adolescents, and is usually accompanied by vivid nightmares. That disorder is popularly called "Old Hag Syndrome", because many people who experience it have recurring nightmares where a demonic hag is strangling them while they lay helpless in bed. Yeah, it sounds weird, but google it, it's 100% true, I can attest to it.

The other state is the one you're experiencing. The chemical which causes your body to become paralyzed tapers off when you fall into a deep sleep, which is why most people toss and turn in their sleep. In some cases though, the chemical stops firing at all, which causes sleep walking. So while your mind is still wandering through dreamland, your body starts functioning again as if it's awake. Whatever dream your sleeping mind is going through, your body starts to enact. That's the most likely cause for you calling your girlfriend in the night without realizing it. While it's harmless for the most part, you may want to check with a doctor about it if the problem continues for an extended period. It's usually harmless, but there are some documented cases of people harming themselves or others while "sleeping".

My guess is it's just a temporary thing that should stop after awhile unless this is something you've had issues with for a long time. Usually issues like this pop up with people that are going through stress or heavy depression, but from what it sounds like it may just be the stress caused by being in a new environment without familiar things around you.

Hope that bit helped you understand your situation a little better. :)

Put your phone on the other side of the room,
that way your less likely to do it,
if your still doing it after trying that out goto a doctor.

I don't have any conditon of "sleep" realted incidents, but I know this happens, though unccomon, every once in a while.

I had just finished playing Rainbow Six at 5 in the morning. I was trying to fall asleep...when all of a suddent, it felt like I had a sudden fall or drop, so I braced myself on the bed. This made my heart beat real quick, but then it subsided.

Can you explain that? It's happened at times when I'm napping at school, and it's quite embarrassing!

Everybody has those "falling" dreams once in awhile. Nobody's really sure exactly what they are or what causes them, but they're usually triggered by a lack of sleep or anxiety.

The sudden body movement to brace yourself from the fall is called a myclonic jerk. Basically, it's a muscle spasm in your arms or legs related to whatever dream you're having. Usually in the case of falling dreams, the spasm wakes you up, but oftentimes you'll remain asleep. That's also the cause of punching headboards and whatnot, as someone else mentioned earlier in the thread. It feels like you just came out of a fall and landed on your bed because your body is reacting in much the same way as it would if you were actually falling.

If you start maintaining a more healthy sleeping pattern, the problem should stop. I'm assuming if you're napping in school that you're staying up late. The lack of sleep is most likely the cause of your issues.

I've had several different things happen at different times. In basic training, there were several things I was told happened with me in my sleep. I was the dorm guard monitor, so I made the schedule for the dorm guard shifts. Apparently, I got up some time late into the night and pull the blankets of one of the other trainees, telling him to get his ass up and go do dorm guard. There were other smaller things too but I don't really remember them anymore.

Towards the end of that year I would get up and starting yelling at/arguing with my wife. Half the time, I would remember it and I can tell you that it was pretty fucking weird. I said all kinds of shit that I never would with control. It stopped after around 8 month or so. The only thing I can think of for that is that it was the first time in my life where I was actually sleeping in the same bed with someone every day. Never did it with girlfriends so that must have been it.

Thanks for the resonse Bluntman428. I did mention that I was playing Rainbow Six untill 5 or so in the morning, so I'd guess that's it. The previous three nights I've been going to bed at around 7 or so, but getting into my home from where ever I was. Spot on about not sleeping much...tonight, I'll hang up my 360 controller and be in bed by around 11-ish or so.

Thanks 256 (lol Demetri Martin)!

Another option is to remove the battery form your phone when you sleep at night, and then getting your housemate to put on an alarm. or keep sleep calling and jsut get a separate alarm, both will work =D

Also, SuPeR DeLuXe, you can see evidence of what Bluntman428 was talking about by watching a dog sleep. Their dreams won't involve sudden jerks (generally) but i've watched my dogs do anything from move their paws like they are running, bear their teeth as if they are growling, and actually bark a few times. The dreams are part of your subconcious acting, and your subconcious has nothing to fight with for control of your body.

This is all very true, and kind of creepy. I personally sleep walk and talk every once and a while. I have gone to bed in my room and woke up on the couch downstairs and everything. But the thing you are describing was in a documentary on some channel, maybe the Science channel. People have actually commited murders while sleep walking (it was even in an episode of x-files ;^) The thing you are describing has been around since before the middle ages. You wake up from a night mere or something but your body is still paralized like you are in R.E.M. sleep and you see stuff. It isn't nessicarely something stranglying you but you see stuff or feel stuff. Like a pressence in your room. The one person that they tested in a lab thought he was being abducted by aliens. the other person thought that they were being haunted. A bunch of weird stuff.

As for your cell phone, set up a camera and see what you do. If not buy an alarm clock at walmart for 9.99 or have your roommate set theirs. You may just want to put your cell phone by something else so that you have to get up to go over to it to call some one so that you have more of a chance of waking up before tampering with it in your sleep.

I also use my cell phone as an alarm clock and a couple days in a row it didnt go off. I was actually turning it off in my sleep like 5 minutes before it went off . I guess I needed my sleep ;)

My dog has nightmeres some times. She sleeps in a cage and I was in the living room watching tv and all the sudden she starts crying and I look over and she is laying on her side , but her legs are moving like she's running. Then she will stop and curl up in a ball and bark. I ran over after watching this and took her out of her cage and she was sound asleep. Pretty freaky stuff

i had to call my one friend to bring a ladder and i crawled back in the window and we had some beers and watched golf.

but i mean, this sleepwalking and shit is weird stuff, i've been reading up on lucid dreaming (being able to control yourself in your dreams, and its pretty strange shit

I have figured out before , in dream, that it was a dream but I couldn't control my great powers :( I have had dreams about X-files before if I go to bed during one or right after one. I have also had a few dreams about video games that consume my time. Also, If I am thinking about something before bed, it sometimes carries into dreams. I actually, one morning, remembered more than one of my dreams, like 4 different ones. Has that ever happened to any of you?

Yeah, I can remember several dreams in one night. If you wake up 4hr.30min. after you wake up, you're pretty much guaranteed to remember your dreams.
