PS3 Achievements

In reading my Game Informer Magazine today I found a short blip stating Sony has decided to enter the realm of Achievement Points in the near future. While very little was revealed, it sounds like developers are not mandated to do AP's, it is optional. While imitation is the greatest form of flatery, Sony's half-way in/out mentality will bastardize this aspect of their programming just as sending out a half-completed system did.

Home is not a rip-off. I don't have a fucking clue what idiotic logic someone used to come up with that but Home is all kinds of different and, from what I've seen, all kinds of better. Just because Microsoft was the first to come up with something functional on live ('Blades?' Holy fucking shit; I bet someone got a promotion to Senior Dumbass for that creativity) doesn't mean that when the other systems implement theirs, it's a ripoff. Nintendo beat Sony, actually, with a bare-bones 'area' of some kind that I've never touched and won't bother with.

If Sony reacted to fan criticism, the six-axis would have went away after debut. THAT is a blatant rip-off for you to use as a reference. However, Sony doesn't care. They're a company that doesn't want to lose money. Personally, if some new company came along and took all the best things about all of the systems and combined them, I'd buy it in a second. No one gets money just because someone thinks they're creative. They get money when they sell a product consumers want. If that system existed, we win.

As for us real gamers that actually like games and not companies, I hope Sony's Home thing works out nicely. I'll be grabbing a PS3 in time for the new Ratchet game, which looks tremendous.

It's actually a trophy system. It's much like the achievement system we have, but I've heard a lot of people saying that it won't be as good as we have it now. It's for PSHome, too.

I don't really care, though. I doubt a lot of people will be buying PS3s if they already have a 360 just to earn a different kind of 'achievement'.

One thing the achievements do is, give you reason to play a game through again on a different difficulty, try what if, do that, play MP.

Even if that home thinggie looks like sims2 ripoff, atleast I like the idea that you can show of with your achievements. (In showing off category that would be probably be even better than the dull number that x0 gives you. Imagine a mile long line of different trophies and awards. :O )

To be honest, I'd rather every system had some sort of reward programme from now on (even the DS)... After achievement addiction i now need to be rewarded for all my games, like a good dog.

These rumors have been around for ages. The PS3 will in fact have a "Trophy" showcase for "Home". Rumors also include creating clothing that has a Trophy on it, so your virtual YOU can show it off as you walk around. Are you guys ready? Here are more rumors...Sony is still considering launching their own Achievement and Points System. It will only be in First Party games and may not be available for ALL PS3 games.

Microsoft have put so much into this "Home" idea, I wouldn't be surprised at all if there'd be some kind of fee to be a part of it. Check out some of the videos on either youtube or the PS3 site, and you can see how much effort they've put into the system.

Okay, we all know that Sony has never come up with anything creative for the PS3. SIXAXIS copied the WiiMote. Home copies off of the Sims. Trophy System copies off of Microsoft. Borrows some crap from the PSP and PC. Honestly who cares. We know the 360 is a MUCH better system. So why do we go and complain about something small.

Truth be told, I would actually get a PS3 over a Wii just because of Home.

It's not like MS are any better chap, look at the whole GUI debacle of times past; drop down menus, drag & drop, dragging things to the trash, icons that resemble the files content, "Ok" and "Cancel" instead of "Do it" or "Don't", etc etc were all nicked from Apple, but at the end of the day who cares? If it works well, it's something everyone should enjoy... As the old saying goes; "Good designers copy, great designers steal".

I doubt it's possible to patent/copyright such a system in which you reward a player (unless they had nicked it code-for-code, then that's just theft), and it's not really the same as Achievements as JDM mentions...

Actually, I think Home might be pretty cool...for a while. I'm not ever going to be buying a PS3 because they're too expensive and I'm already busy enough with my 360. The thing that really bothers me about Home and the trophies though is the fact that not all games have to include this feature. I think that was a bad decision, but then again, some people may only buy games which feature the trophies. I really hope for all future consoles to include something such as achievements.
