If you're wondering why it seems that only the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV is getting downloadable content, the reason is possibly because Microsoft have paid a whopping fifty million dollars for it.

Stock analysis website SeekingAlpha (http://seekingalpha.com/article/38017) have referenced last weeks press release (http://ir.take2games.com/ReleaseDetail.cfm?ReleaseID=248580) from Take-Two regarding it's financial results and a conference call in relation to that, where it is revealed that the million "Deferred revenue" figure is actually coming from Microsoft, who will pay Take-Two million for one downloadable episode in March '08 and the other million later on in fiscal '08 for the second episode. We can assume from this that these are likely to be the dates when we will actually receive the content, although it's not certain.
It's a long article to read in full but this is the quote which confirms the above:

as it relates to the deferred revenue chunk associated with the episodic content on X-Box 360, you can see that million of that moved into short-term deferred. Could you give us any sense of when that’s going to hit the P&L? Will we see million at one time and then the second 25 or will it be a slow bleed?

The first 25 is for the first episodic content package that’s supposed to go out and that is in March of '08. That’s why it moved into current because it’s in the next 12 months. The second 25 will be for the second episodic, the episode, and that will be later in fiscal '08.

This screenshot below shows part of the financial results with the deferred revenue figure being talked about above: (in '000s)

What we're trying to work out is where exactly Microsoft are getting their money back and profiting from this. Clearly they are doing this to help sell consoles as well as copies of the game, but even then, not everybody is going to buy the content, and assuming it will be priced at 800 points (that's ) - 5 million people would have to download the content just for Microsoft to break even. The actual price is not yet known and it's very possible that it will cost more than this.

Fifty million eh? No wonder Bill Gates ain't the richest man in the world anymore (although $50,000,000 would do nothing to affect a billionaire....just laugh at the joke damn it.) :p

Yeah, 50 million is like pennies to Bill Gates and spending that one billion on warranties is like a dollar for him too lol but either way, that's a lot of money for paying for an exclusive. I wonder how much Sony pays Square to keep the main FF games on their console.

well this proves why the 360 pwns the ps3. microsoft is willing to pay that much money for that content! i'm sure that rockstar will release more stuff for the 360 in the future because they know that microsoft has paid them more.

Hmm £50 million is alot and the wouldnt put money without thinking they're gonna make some. Maybe they are not just gonna sell straight forward episodes. Maybe 2 episodes 800 M$ Points each and then... maybe extra wardrobe stuff, more cars, more city, more types of pedestrians, more houses to buy or businesses to buy. Who knows for sure all of these could be made and have there own price tags.;)

£50 million is a drop in the ocean, your thinking about it all wrong...

If a person has an Xbox and a PS3, which copy do you think he'll buy? The game will be the same on both systems but on the one system you have downloadable content coming (and achievements :p). But not only does that person pick the 360 version but they have deprived their opposition of one more sale. Do that with a few million users that have both systems and MS are laughing behind closed doors ;)

Definitely agree with Webb, it's all just business. This gives the Xbox 360 a direct competitive advantage over the PS3, and with all the wars between producers, some advantages are priceless. $50 Mil is nothing to MS, if it can create an illusion that somehow their product is better than Sony, then that can affect future decisions too about games with customers.

I'm sure this will get more developers to make their games for the 360. They already liked making games for it before, and now they see that there's a chance they could make much more money if they make games for the console. Sony needs to do something soon about this type of thing or else they are going to be farther in the hole than they already are.

Exactly i have both and will only buy for xbox 360 as the ps3 will be pointless buying for maybe if they bring out a stories version yeah but not the proper game and they might bring it out like 800 ms points for different cities and like 200 points for a new section of clothes (addidas nike and so on)
