Intro: Seisou Kouki Strania or Strania –The Stella Machina- is a shoot-em-up/SHUMP from G.rev who has also done the Senko No Ronde Series and Mamoru-Kun, though in this game, you will be controlling mechs (kinda like a mobile suit from the Gundam series), and in this SHMUP, you will blast through 6 Stages on Normal (or 7 on Hard/Expert) for intense SHUMP action.
General Achievement Note: Achievements will not unlock in Training, only in local or co-op play, but the update Version 1.1 makes some changes though. Go HERE (http://www.grev.co.jp/str/update.html) for Update details.
How to: Well, Strania is not as easy as it looks, although first timers can probably finish the first 2 stages without problems, but once you go into stages 3-6 on Normal (and 7 in Hd/Ex), it gets quite difficult. Note that Strania requires the use of a weapons based system, and the use of an O/D (Overdrive) gauge which grants the player temporary invulnerability (and a Multiplier) when it is completely filled. The Overdrive can be activated in two ways:
1. By pressing :xbut: (Default), it will be depleted within 5-6 seconds.
2. When taking damage if you’re not attacking or changing weapons, and it will be depleted within 2-3 seconds.
Default controls: :abut: is to attack/shoot, :bbut: is to change weapons, and :xbut: is to use O/D when the gauge is full (or when taking damage when not attacking/changing weapons). It is advisable though to configure the button layout to suit your own habits.
Weapons: There are 10 weapons in the game, and each weapon has its own use and ability, though once you start the game, you’ll be equipped with 2 “Normal” weapons and a “Sword”. You can pick up other weapons during the course of the game which can either be a good thing or a bad thing: Since you have to use the right weapon(s) for the right stage/terrain you can either put yourself at an advantage or at a disadvantage and in the worst case end up losing a life or a whole credit. Note that Weapons can be upgraded to Lv.2 if you pick up the same weapon that’s in your hand. Upgraded weapons will increase their rate of fire, range or damage. Also note that any other weapon you pick up will replace your current weapon that’s in your hand(s). This means that your current weapon is 'lost' and that it cannot be re-used until you pick up the same weapon again. Lastly, certain Lv.2 Weapons can only be used/upgraded by the Stranian’s (Blue) or by the Vower’s (Red), except the Violet ones which are the Normal/Handgun and Sword weapons. Training, however, lets you use all Lv.2 weapons without exceptions.
Now here’s the Weapons List and what they do.
Normal/Handgun: Default weapon that shoots in a straight/linear direction.
Sword: A melee weapon which swings left and right in close proximity. A sword combo can be done with 2 swords which can also disintegrate bullets whith its third slash/strike. Note that depending on the side you choose (1P/2P) you will either unleash a strong wave that damages targets in front of you (1P) or you will perform a spinning move to hit targets around you (2P).
Vulcan: Fires wide/spread shots in a forward direction. Good for popcorn-enemies and enemy Mechs, bigger enemies and bosses have to be shot at point-blank range to deal enough damage.
Missile: Fires small homing missiles that are relatively weak. A good weapon to support the Laser, Vulcan or Rocket, now upgraded to fire faster.
Rocket: Fires a big slightly homing missile that makes a round explosion upon impact. Very strong weapon that can take out all threaths which appear in front of you.
Bomb: Drops small bombs in a downward direction, now upgraded so that it makes small round explosions upon impact.
Laser: High powered long range laser that fires in a straight direction. The damage output is constant along this line, so there is no need for point-blanking.
Direction: A weapon that can be used to fire at all angles (fires in the opposite direction of your movement. Significantly stronger than the Vulcan this weapon can adapt to most situations.
Reflect: A weapon that fires off and bounces from the terrain and the edge of the screen.
Side: Fires from left and right from the mech.
Credits: You’ll start the game with 3 credits, and extra credits will unlock after each hour or so by 2 (until you reach up to 9 credits), similar like Ikaruga’s credit unlock system, eventually, you’ll get Free Play.
Difficulty: There are 3 difficulty modes, although they’re not all the same, each difficulty has its toughness and its strengths…
1. Normal: The default difficulty. Has 6 stages.
2. Hard: More bullet patterns and moderate boss durability. Has 7 stages.
3. Expert: Even more/denser bullet patterns and enemy shots fire faster. Bosses have more health and all enemies except popcorn-enemies and bosses will release suicide bullets when they are destroyed. Has 7 stages.
Extend: The game’s system of a 1-UP/Extra Life, you’ll earn extra lives by scoring…
1. 200,000 points
2. 1,000,000 points
3. And 1,000,000 every time after that.
Bonuses: At the end of each stage, you will be awarded a Grade (depends on actions such as enemies destroyed and damage taken) and Time Bonus (destroying a boss quicker yields more points). Here’s the rundown of each letter rank and score…
1. S rank: 100,000 points
2. A rank: 50,000 points
3. B rank: 30,000 points
4. C rank: 10,000 points
Step 1: Start-Up
First off, you want to earn the simple (and “Secret”) achievements. You’ll just get them during gameplay, best bet is to do them in Normal difficulty, since it has an in-game tutorial to help know how to play the game. Through this step you will earn:
1. Straightism
2. Three Sword Style
3. Fireworks Craftsman
4. Cleaning Up Space Debris
