I have spoken to a few friends and they say that the game is pretty good but when I asked them if they would buy it or rent it I recieved different oppionions.
I have never played a Portal game but the trailers and TV commercials seem quite interesting and hilarious.
It looks like a fun game but after reading the walkthrough seeing that it's only 8-10 hours to beat kind of turns me off.
The gameplay looks amazing and the co-op would be a lot of fun to play (as long as it isn't some 13 year old kid who has no idea how to play).

Is this game worth buying or just renting for a week? (In a 7 day period I could probably log on 15 hours on it, if not more).

I have never played a Portal game ...

Play the demo of Portal: Still Alive. If you like it, get The Orange Box. If you like it, buy Portal 2.

Doesn't that sound like such a round about method for just one game

You might want to at least play the first Portal to understand some stuff. Story might seem kinda "whatthehellisgoingon". Would recommended just renting the game if you havent played the first.

Better safe to try a demo first. The Orange Box is a steal with 5 games for a super cheap price. With The Orange Box, you'd have a clear and better experience of Portal 2 otherwise you'd miss out on a whole lot of the jokes and references.

I know all 5 games are good, and I know what your saying. The demo idea isn't bad it's just the thing with Orange Box. I just can't understand why purchase something that's 20USD or what have you, for just one game that equally costs 12.00USD for console to 9.99USD for PC. Sadly while I know it's quiet an amazing deal I don't know because I'm a complete achievement hunter or what every you want to say, and one that doesn't like odd numbered :gsicon: achievements. I'd be content with just spending 1200MS for it on console, but since I have it on PC it doesn't really matter.

My thing is that if your going to get Portal get it for one console because the mechanics of Portal on PC vs Console is staggeringly different in the sense that one requires less dexterity than the other.

I'm a massive portal fan. Completed single campaign twice and co-op twice. Got every achievement. Total time = 3days of 3-5hours per day playing. Once you've done everything there's not much you can do. So I'm selling mine. A Must play game though

Surefire buy.

I would play the first one, first. It is a sequel, so you will miss some stuff if you dont.

After playing it I definately say: RENT IT.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great game. However, if you are even remotely intelligent Single Player + Co-Op will take you less then 10 hours to complete. Combine that with the fact that there are no challenge maps like in the original Portal and this game has virtually NO replay value past the first 10 hours or so of gameplay. 10 hours of gameplay is not worth paying full price for.

I highly support this game, and it's an amazingly in-depth and immersing experiencing. Worth playing through twice in my opinion. (1 - focus on puzzles, 2 - focus on dialogue).

Co-op is also quite fun if you have a friend who you can play with.

I encourage purchasing the game to support Valve, but honestly, if you can manage to play for 20-30 hours in a week, it's probably a rent.

Play Still Alive. Wasn't a huge Portal guy until recently. Got the Orange Box back when it came out. Loved the dialogue and atmosphere, but at the time I wasn't really in the mood to sit through puzzles! Tried it again recently and loved it! The puzzles really aren't as daunting as they seem once you get several mechanics down. 200/200 in two days! Couldn't stop playing it, DESPITE Mortal Kombat coming out the day before. Getting the second one tomorrow because luckily 'tis my birthday tomorrow. Good stuff... Moral is, try the demo for Still Alive, if you like it, beat Portal. Whether it be on the Orange Box or Still Alive. Though I found the extra Still Alive challenges very entertaining. Then, get Portal 2!

Buy. It doesn't have that same WOW factor the end of Portal 1 had but the gameplay is just as good as the first and has been expanded upon greatly. I found most of the single player to be rather easy compared to the first but I did just recently replay the first game to get my mind in portal solving mode :P

I consider it a buy just for the writing and wit that has been put into this game. You get a 6-8 Hour Single player and an even shorter coop (I think I havent done it yet, just going off of what I've heard). If your the kind of person that needs to get 40 hours for your 60$ this may not be the game for you but it really is worth it.

You can also replay the game with a "Directors Commentary" which I think that every single game should have from now on. I find it funny now that someone has done it that no one did it sooner.

Rent. Not much to do after you finish single player, co-op, and achievements (which takes around 20 hours). I'm selling my copy presently and regret purchasing it. It's a great game, don't get me wrong; there just simply isn't any reason to hold on to it after you're finished.

Buying when I get the cash saved up and finish some other games for trade-in towards it.

One thing about Valve games when you beat them: you will play them again. I know I do.

I've beaten Half Life 2 I don't know how many times, and have replayed the first Portal at least 3 or 4 times. Already repeated the campaigns from Left 4 Dead 1 several times each with my squad or solo and have only had the game a week.

The replay value on a Valve game is huge.

As much as I love Valve, Portal, and the Half-Life universe, if, IF, you don't care about that stuff, and you just want a good game, and you couldn't care less about the story.

Just rent it.

It's a great game and is really fun. But it is an easy 1000 and won't have much replay value after that. I say rent now and buy later at $10-$20 when there is DLC out. Although I did hear Gamestop is supposed to be selling it for $40 next week. At that price it is a good deal to buy, beat, 100% and resell on ebay or craigslist.

i rented it and played through it the first night. i think it's easily one of the best games i've ever played, and i HATE first person perspective. As good as the game is though, i just can't justify a purchase. i'd say rent until you're sick of it, watch youtube videos of the hilarious quotes over and over, and when the price comes down, buy it. it'd be a good game to have in the future, and stores don't carry them to rent for very long.

The diversity of answers here makes it fairly difficult to discern a good decision. It sort of depends on you personally.

When some DLC comes out, I really want to play it, so I bought it and I'm holding on to it. If you only want the 1000 though, might as well just rent it.

Rent it, the game is short. You'll blow through it in no time, once you get the hang of the gameplay mechanics. Granted the first time though the game is amazing but after that, it's got zero replay value. Co-op is fun if you can find a decent friend to play with but even at that, after you complete it once there's no reason to play it ever again other than mopping up some loose achievements you may have missed...

Not to mention that it's going on sale at Gamestop, makes me wish I'd have just waited to buy it or simply rented it. I bought the game to hold me over until I get Duke Nukem and I wound up beating the entire game in two days, now I'm back to being bored. About four, maybe four and a half hours of play for campaign, give or take and I got stuck twice for quite a while. Three or so for co-op and a good portion of that was waiting for my partner.

Guess it's kind of hard to say, I loved the first game, so much so that I bought this one without thinking... I loved the game the first time though, I love the puzzles, I love the dialogue, I love the story but once that initial buzz wore off I felt like I'd wasted $60 for a few hours worth of gaming. Not being a rich man, tossing out $60 for such a small game kind of sucks.

EDIT: As for those who're defending the game by saying the DLC will make up for it, unless that content is free and plentiful I don't possibly see how it could. Even at that, this game would better be suited as a $39.99 title instead of a full priced game.

For $40 is it worth buying?

At my workplace we had a "Save Triple The GST" event going on... BUT! Portal 2 was $69.99
I did save $7.50 on 2800 MS points :D

I would definitely rent it or at least wait until the DLC is released before you buy it. You get the $60 you paid for out of it, but it's one of those games that you don't really play often enough to justify the price tag.

I would get the Orange Box (If you never played Portal 1) and enjoy the same experience for a much cheaper price. The Half-Life series is good too, though I suck ass at TF2...

Someone like OP who has never played Portal before should probably just rent the game first. It only took me a few hours over the course of 2 days to beat the game and ive been working on co-op over the past few days with my brother. You might be able to finish both within a week.

I saw a gamespot talk on Portal 2, I've never seen/heard of the first one, nor knew about #2. I'm kinda interested, but what I did like is the dialogue! thought it was a bit of comic relief. Although I'll think i'll rent it than buy it.

For me this is a definite BUY. Co-op is escpecially good even on split-screen.

Slight bias though as my name is Wheatley and GF's is Chell so it makes me want to buy for keeps.

I got a mint condition used copy from Gamestop for $29 after tax, and employee / used discounts, since they are currently selling it brand new for $39.99. Wouldn't say its worth the full price but it is a great game and with the free DLC coming out for it this summer its worth holding on to.

i would say rent, i thought it was a great game, but to pay 30-40 pounds for what is a single play through game, it cost me 7pound for 7 days from local store.

a much as i love this game, it's definatly a rent for me.

5 nights and i've got the full 1000g.

Got most of the co-op gs with a friend but i also played with quite a few random people which was pretty cool (most of the time)

It's a rental for those who aren't fans of the game and some who are fans

I'm a big fan I've actually gone through the campaign 3 times of my own volition, just out of pure curiosity to see whats around no achievement getting.

Achievement wise it took me 2 days to get every achievement

Mike Langlois

I'm not a hard-core gamer so I know I wouldn't blow through it in a few days. I will enjoy the experience and probably end up playing it a lot with friends & some family memebers. I played the first 2 chapters and goofed off on co-op and I am quite pleased with the game so far. The commentary is hilarious

I bought this game last Saturday since the price had dropped and I love it. Having said that - rent it. It might take two rentals to get all of the achievements, but after five days I have gotten all of the single player achievements and maybe half of the co-op achievements. There is supposed to be DLC in the summer but the game might be $20 by that time. I've already had people tell me they paid $30 for it.

To give you an idea of how long it is, as a casual gamer, I bought it Saturday afternoon, was 2/3 done with it that night, and finished it up Sunday evening (did not play until after 7 o'clock).

I don't think I'll replay it, but I really don't replay gamers after I've beaten them unless its to beat a higher difficulty.

Rent for sure.

If you really put your mind to it, you can beat the whole thing (co-op and SP) in a day. After you solve a puzzle once, you will never struggle to solve it again, destroying any replay value (unless you have amnesia).

I would say you may aswell rent it if you are short of cash. It can be clocked pretty fast but I would say make sure you play Portal 1 first. You can't do it the other way around. I went back to 1 after I finished 2 for a laugh and was shocked how bad the controls seemed after playing 2 for so long. I think Portal 1s age really shows when you go back to it

Rent. It is fun, but the lasting appeal is really low. Too short of a campaign, solo and co-op. If you really like to think, buy it, but not a big deal. Don't get me wrong, it is fun, but if you dont know the series with Black Mesa or even Aperture science, rent
