Sub stats

I'm struggling with lv 1 sub but don't have enough stars to get anything better nor do I see myself getting 5 star on every level. What sub has the best stats assuming you can get only 1 and want it as early as possible? I guess I'm asking if I need to save 65 stars to start?

It doesn't matter. You don't 'buy' subs for stars. They are unlocked automaticaly to pick for mission when you reach certain amount of stars.
