I was excited to come home from college and sit back and relax to some nice gaming. However, my xbox had other plans. My xbox fails to recognize any discs (it repeatedly says "open tray, close tray," regardless of what is in it), and if it does happen to recognize something (1 out of every 20 attempts) it will later on say "the disc is scratched or broken," and make me restart my xbox almost instantaneously. Absolutely none of my games work, except for the downloaded games of course. Now I have to send it in to get repaired :( I suppose the laser that reads the discs needs to be realligned?

I think Xbox Live Labs was a seceret nazi regime to hack in to and sabotage my Xbox, and all other Xboxs, so that we couldn't use them over spring break. The more you think about it, the more sense it makes.

You might need to send it in, i am not expert but if it keeps it up you might want to check it out.

Yeah, I already signed up for a repair :) I was lucky and got it under warranty just in time. It does suck, I was looking forward to being a bum and playing all break, but I guess I have to actually get up and leave the house now. Damn Bill Gates and his hijinks.

yeah.
I would not be happy at all if mine broke either.

I'm quite used to this feeling of total annoyance. I have had to send in an xbox to get it repaired about 5 times now. Apparently my household is against the usage of microsoft appliances. I treat everything I own like a king, but somehow they have internal errors that can't be controlled. I just hate getting stuck having to pay for repairs for something that I can't control. Nonsensical, I say.

Wow, sounds like you're having a shitty spring break :|. That happened to me a while ago where the disc reader would sort of jump around sometimes. I had to send it in...

I never had any issues with the actual hardware (aside from over-heating) with the old xbox model, but my slim is one noisy SOB. I think it was messed up from day one.

Sounds like your laser has weakened to the point of not even reading discs anymore?
How are you playing your games? you ripping them to the hard drive and then playing or do you constantly just play from the disc?
Remember that the ability to rip the disc is your friend.. it does more good then anything else you can do for your box.
Also, OP how much was the repair? I know MS like to charge for repair if they aren't related to E74 or 3 flashing lights.. (atleast that was how it use to be) and they would charge 100 bucks per repair for anything outside of those errors.
So what i did when i had E79 and 1 flashing light.. I just told them it would sometimes say E79 and then other times it would say E74.. it comes and goes.. and they sent me another box for free.
and if you paid 100 bucks i would think you'd be better off buying a new 4GB slim and using your current hard drive if needed.

Yeah, I already tried all of those things. And also, I only have a few games installed to the harddrive, but in reality, the majority of the games I play are downloaded arcade games or retail games from the marketplace, so I don't think the laser would be too worn out. I guess we will find out.
