Here is the place, Ladies and Gentlemen...

Feel free to put down your past or current experiences about BROKEN DOWN Xbox 360's. You see plenty of threads being created all the time here in the "General Xbox 360" part of the forum about Xbox 360's breaking down, dying, giving out "The RED Ring of Death", and having to be sent back to M$. Here is your place to tell your story. I'll start it off...

Xbox 360 #1 - DVD Drive problem. Would not load ANYTHING period. I bought it Brand NEW and had it only for 2 weeks tops!

Xbox 360 #2 - FIRE! Melted plastic on Power Supply Box and Xbox 360 power outlet.

Currently...

Xbox 360 #3 - No problems yet. 3rd times the charm, right? *Knocks on Wood*

Xbox 360 Elite - Have yet to launch. *Knocks on Wood REALLY HARD*

Bought a broken 360 off eBay in the hope of repairing it myself. Ended up sending it to MS... a few months later they refunded all 1st year console repairs, and I ended up with a premium for $100 :D

1 So far, and they sent it me back broken.

You should have made more poll opinion for a more accuracte sample.

Yeah it's not accurate enough, you didn't allow those of us who have had brilliant 360's vote... Mine hasn't broken down at all, mind you I've only had it since last January soo...

Good call, Curtis. I didn't want to have too many options available on the polls, but rather have members post their stories. What would you have suggested? It's too late for me to edit the thread now, but I can keep your suggestions in mind for next time that I decide to make a Poll Thread.

Yet another good call! I actually thought about having a poll option for those that still have their 360's without any problems or signs of breaking down. But I created this thread to unite members that had a 360 break down on them. I just thought that too many poll options would dilute the thread.

Sorry. didn't mean to "rig" the polls, Bill:p

Don't say start the thread over...I just wanted to see the response for members that have experienced a Broken Down 360. For those of you with a problem-free 360, you guys are the lucky ones. I'm not so lucky, however:mad:

5!

4 were dvd drive issues and 1 red ring:mad: Damn disposable systems.

Not trying to start anything new, but I'd love to know (probably should be a different thread)... of the ones that have broken and were sent back, what position were they set up in? Vertical or horizontal.

I've got a few buddies on my list with about double my score or more, and they say they've had zero issues (except for the occasional freeze), but their systems are all horizontal......mine were all setup vertically w/fanstands:confused:

Where's the 0 problems option?

2 US, 2 Jap Premiums boxes, and 1 US Elite and no dead boxes yet. I was worried that I was going to have problems with my first Jap box since it was starting to have some graphical problems and I didn't want to risk going w/out during the league.

Edit: mine are always horizontal and well ventilated.

Power surge killed my first 360, hard war malfunction.
I got it replaced [warranty] and it came defective.
Third one had a screwed up disk tray, so it would scratch EVERY CD. Died a month later.
The current one I have is working fine :D

I'm currently waiting on receiving my 3rd 360 from the repair center. The 1st one started getting overheating problems and I couldn't play it for more than 15-20 minutes without it shutting itself off. The second one started making this really loud grinding noise when it was reading the discs and eventually stopped reading them alltogether. Hopefully #3 wont give me so much trouble.

Only 1. My console was bought at the end of March last year and it broke around November (~ 7 months). I sent it in to Micrsoft and got it the next week, refurbished (not a new console, same console but fixed). Had it refunded, so it was a free repair (mostly)..

Anyways, it's been working since, mostly in good condition. It's been around 6 months with it now and I hope it won't crash on me anytime soon. If it does, I guess I may repair it again or go get an Elite.

1st: Stopped sending out a video signal - 6 months
2nd: Would freeze 5-30 seconds into whatever I played, including arcade games - 5 months
3rd: 3 red lights - 3 months
4th: Loud freeze, then 3 red lights - 2 months
5th: They sent back a different unit that wouldn't open stading up, would not read most disc, and would tell me on most others that I needed to put the disc into... an XBox 360 system - out of box

My first one got the 3 rings of death, now this one gives off a whining sound quite often when a disc is playing. And a couple times anything I put in will show up "Unplayable Disc." Then I wait an hour or so and it will work fine. But it is most likely dieing, I just can't bring myself to send it in because that will be a couple weeks without my 360.

ThrillKillBill
06-02-2007, 06:57 PM
as it stands right now (according to the varius posts the results should be

0 breakdown = 7 = 36.82%
1-4 breakdowns = 9 = 47.34%
5-9 breakdowns = 3 = 15.78%
10+ breakdowns = 0 = 0%

this could be off by a lil because i used a basic formula as 19 being total votes came to roughly 5.26% per vote leaving a unaccountable margerin of error by .06%

i find this more interesting then the poll results above :)

well......im on my 2nd console, but im on my 3rd repair...i already posted a thread about it.
1st breakdown,(console bought in march 06) wasnt initially a breakdown...just a broken ethernet port. i could play games but couldnt connect to live.(sent in jan 2007)

2nd breakdown. I sent in my original console, around a week or two later, i recieve a refurbished console. Around a month after recieving my refurbished console....its disc drive broke, it couldnt read anything.(sent in around late march 2007)

3rd breakdown, I then sent in my refurbished console, recieved it around april 20'th.....then now....last week, i got the three red lights. I went to xbox.com for troubleshooting, didnt work.....the screen kept freezing.... I called tech support yesterday, and was called back today from the agents supervisor.

I was told today that i do not qualify for a new console, and he cant send me a brand new one because of "policy"......So now im probably gonna have to send my current console in and get another refurbished console...and if that breaks down within 90 days of its return to me, i get to call tech support all over again just for them to make a claim to corporate office for me to get a brand new console......

Only ever had one console break, about a year ago, last June. DVD drive failed slowly. Apparently it couldn't spin fast enough, and I could play games but they were all screwed up. Specifically, I was playing Tomb Raider and I was in some weird purplish dream world kind of thing. I didn't think the MS support guy on the phone would believe me because it was so strange.

I'm on my third 360. When the 'please place this disc in an XBOX 360 console' thing first came up, it wasn't that big a deal. Until I had to keep trying 5 or 6 times to get a game to work. Finally, I sent it in to get repaired. What a waste of time, I should have known better then to expect them to do their jobs right.

Just this week, when I tried to play Forza 2 for the first time, the 'fixed' console started doing the same fucking thing. I called up Microsoft, told the guy who couldn't speak proper english to put his supervisor on, and demanded a new 360. This lady was a complete bitch. Telling me in this snotty voice that I would have to send it back to be repaired again. I told her off, and did what I should have done to begin with.

When I bought my 360 at Gamestop, I had bought a warranty for the it. But I didn't want to have to pay to get a new warranty, so I had it repaired the first time. When I called Microsoft last week, I was looking for a new console. I don't know why I thought I'd get it. I think I just wanted to yell at somebody. I took the 360 to Gamestop, showed them my warranty, traded hard drives, and I was back and playing Forza in half an hour. Fourty dollars lighter, but defenitly worth it compared to the other option.

For anybody that bought the warranty, forget sending it to Microsoft to be fixed. Just take it back to where you bought it. It will save so much time and hassle. I'm no longer worried about my 360 breaking down. As long as you buy the new warranty every time, you can go through as many as you have to...

06-04-2007, 04:33 PM
My first one lasted about a month after launch before it started burning discs (had to swap some games too, luckily had understanding staff at the shop I bought it).

My second lasted until about two months ago and then I had to send it for repair - though it didn't cost me anything and it came back within a week.

Interestingly the didn't send me a refurb just the same console, I know as it still had the smae problem of a sticky disc drive that I sometimes have to push open.

Um, when I got banned like on 4/18 or so My 360 had stopped working on 4/15 and then I went through Blah blah with Microsoft ...I figured it was the DVD drive because I would put the discs in and not hear them clicking away...So effectively all I could play was Arcade Games..like Robotron and Uno!The B**** over the phone tried to tell me that wasn't it!I so I sent it in..the box came that Thursday,I didn't send it out till Monday-that was my bad. I wasn't playing again till May 3rd..

Now I gave the Premium that just got Fixed to my younger brothers, and I keep my Elite

Have you ever thought about environmental issues? Bad power coming to the unit or keeping it in too hot of an area?

HomelikeChunk
06-07-2007, 07:02 PM
Yeah I thought of that, I know its not getting to hot since it isnt in a confined place there is plenty of air and room around it, I have an expensive monster power supply center, that I usually have it plugged into, but xbox tech that they would prefer me to plug it directly into the wall so i did that, but the screwy thing is that it worked the way i have had it sit up for over a year.

My 3siddy dies after 6 months. I thought Lego starwars had caused it to break! I was angry at first as I had spent $650 on it, But Microsoft were pretty good about it. sent it away and 2 weeks later I got it back good as new.

Two, I had a launch console that lasted nearly the entire year but experienced the "ring of death" a month shy of the anniversary. I called Microsoft and sent the console in, they returned it with a refurb which irked me. I booted it, it updated and rebooted, then kicked a error code. I called Microsoft again and had to send that one in. The second replacement was a new console which I'm thankful for. After all of it though what really got me pissed was that with the new console I couldn't play downloaded content (such as GRAW chapter 2 maps) unless I was on Live because the content is connected to the console serial number upon downloading.

First 360: The power cord was wonky. They gave me a three prong cord instead of a two. It gave me the ring of death then just completely shut off when I tried to play a game.
second 360: Doing well other than freezing at certain points, but I blame the rental discs.

The Nyko Intercooler is crap IMO. Having that damn thing killed my last 360. I haven't gotten around to taking pictures of it yet, but a few people have asked to see what the intercooler did. Since it draws it's power from the 360 itself, that caused a surge in power for me. It melted the back of the power outlet on my 360, the intercooler had partially melted, and my cord for the power box was burnt. FYI, M$ does NOT warranty the Power Supply Box for a year, unlike the consoles. I had to pay another $70.00 out of my own pocket for another Power Box(used on eBay). The BEST cooling device would either be the Pelican Fan Stand or the Intec Glo-Stand. Some people have had no problems, but many have had problems with the intercooler being installed. It's your call, Coolio. I, personally would take the sucker off.

on another note:

http://kotaku.com/gaming/nothing-to-see-here/microsoft-component-updates-happen-all-the-time-269090.php

So popular consensus pretty much has it that Microsoft are whacking an extra heatsink into busted 360s. Which is great news for those suffering from red rings. Not so great for Microsoft PR, though, because they're caught between a rock and a hard place: deny the extra heatsink and you look like a goose, but admit the extra heatsink and you're fessing up that the original hardware isn't good enough. Their workaround?

" Regularly updating console components is commonplace within the industry and is a standard aspect of the business for a variety of reasons including cost reduction, improved manufacturability and improved performance."

Smooth, Microsoft. Very smooth. Oh, except you left off the bit about improved reliability. Still, the rest was good, and you kept a straight face throughout, so well done! That can't have been easy.

XBOX360 Pro - 5-6k hours played zero problems.
XBOX360ELITE - 1k hours played zero problems.
PS3 - 50 Hours Played - Dead
PS3/2 - 10 Hours Played Dead
PS3/3 - Dead out of Box
PS3/4 - 3 Hours Played.....
Wii - 200 Hours Played Zero Issues.
NES 2 - 10,000 Hours Played....get this....zero issues lol.
These are rough estimates. My wife cheats and plays when I'm not home. (That didn't sound good lol.)

I do remember one member posting a thread saying he had 13 360's break down. I'm not sure if he's the one that voted though. You're right. No post or anything.

L3gion, you can add more polls if needed. Maybe like a ZERO for those that haven't encountered a problem.

the poll would have been more effective if it was 1, 2, 3, 4, 5-10, or 10+ because the majority will obviously be between 1 and 4. I would say about my experience with 360's but I dont want to jinx it lol

so far i'm on my 1st one (Aug 2006) but my disk tray has started to stick within the last few months (only when there is no disk in it), but i don't want to send it into M$ and end up getting another "fixed" console with worse problems. So until the tray will not open at all, i'm sticking with it.

Also any one else who has had this problem (which appears to be a lot, by looking through the forums) does it just stay annoying or does it get worse and eventually not open at all?

No, I selected None. But surprisingly with all the horror stories I've heard and read from so many 360 gamers, my 360 console has yet to break and fail EVER on me. *crosses fingers* My Xbox 360 is also an original system that I purchased on release day. I read before the system came out and realized that heat was going to be an issue. My system is always in an open air environment where it can stay cool at all times. I've had my system on for hours, days, at a time and it still works great. I was thinking that I was one of the few lucky gamers out there, but it's surprising to see that a decent percentage of the systems have held up.

It's amazing to see the results of dead 360's.

I have an idea! Have you guys ever seen those, "Where's George Now?" or "Track George On...blah blah blah website" on currency before? We can do that with the 360!:p Carve your initial or something into it and see who receives your 360 next or you can write down the Console ID#. If M$ changes the casing then that would defeat the whole purpose.

Of course this is just a joke. Don't attempt this!:p

Wow! I've never had heat issue like that on my 360. And sometimes my system will be running all day...

I have had something similar happen on the Wii though. If you turn it off via the Wii-mote it only turns the unit into standby mode where it will download updates and do various other things. I picked it up after I thought it had been shut down for several hours and it almost burned me it was so hot. Hard to believe a little thing like that could get that hot. Other than that sometimes I'll pull a disc out of my PS3 that will be really warm... but I've never had an issue on my 360.

I guess my 3rd 360 is just another lemon. Hopefully Microsoft will fix the hardware fault. At least my situation isn't as bad as the people that have gone thru 10 + systems already since launch.

Weird how people have different experiences, huh? Resistence is the very game (the only PS3 game I own for that matter) that I pulled out and found to be too hot to touch. Where as I've pulled out some PS2 games and only found them to be warm. Maybe my PS3 is as faulty as those 360s.

As to the people returning 10+ systems... why is it I have this nagging suspicion that 99% of them haven't even purchased any 360s to begin with. I mean, sure, statistically it must happen. Or at least it's entirely possible. But it just seems when people get on the internet and have no proof to back things up they make some pretty unbelievable claims. Where as in the real world I know 7 different people, none of whom have had a single problem with a 360. Well I did have a friend who had his vertically and it was tipped over... but that's hardly Microsoft's fault. Add to that my friend's list of people online, out of those 12 none have had a single problem.

If broken 360s are that easy to come by... surely one of us would've had issue by now. Don't get me wrong, I know for a fact issues happen... I went through 6 3G iPods... 6. Before I finally sold a replacement and bought a Creative Zen. Yet I knew quite a few people with 3G iPods that had no issues what so ever. But hell, even at 6 I was at my wits end. They couldn't have paid me enough to try for 10. It seems to me those claims are a little hard to believe... but if they are true, perhaps they should just buy a console from me... or stop trying to load it in the dishwasher. ;)

Sent my Xbox back to play.com and they was sending me out another but it got robbed off the back of their truck so I just received a refund as I didn't wanna wait and then just went to my local store and picked up a great deal. Premium console with 2 controllers and these games:

Xbox live arcade (shit and I never play it but oh well lol)
Rainbow Six vegas
PGR3
Smackdown
And a game of my choice which was - Crackdown (Hugely regret getting that game because It was a pile of shit and I traded it in the next few days for £30)

Wow, only 29% of the people have never had their Xbox 360s broken. Well they can cover up the numbers well because I remember they said the default rate was around 7%. Someone posted the youtube link about this and apparently the figures they put were lies or else they would have to do recalls or some turd like that. Anyways, I've had one of my break on me unfortunately. I hope to never see that day once again because my patience is poor and I can't live without video games especially since I bought Blue Dragon. I also can't believe someone went through 9 360s. I've heard of someone going through 6 (and that was last year) but 9 is insane.

I just picked up an Elite to replace my last 360.

Question: Does it increase the 360 life expectancy if you lay the box flat or standing up.

I would like to use this new system longer than 4 days.

I don't know if it matters just make sure it's got space around it and that you don't use an intercooler.

First 360 lasted 12 weeks, bought it boxing day 2006. Took it back to game and got handed a new 360 which is still going strong.

The Xbox 360 was designed to function both ways, vertically and horizontally. There has been rumors that the drive is more stable when the console is positioned horizontally, but I smell B$.

For those of you that had a 360 die on you in the matter of weeks, I can relate.
I purchased a Brand New 360 and the drive died on me within 1 1/2 weeks. I was so damn pissed and disappointed.

To Perpetual,
I think my poll is quite accurate...except for the member that voted for 9+ and didn't comment about it. M$ is all about money and you know they'll lie their @$$es off just to reassure us consumers.
With the latest Red Ring Warranty being extended, this was said by a M$ Spokesperson, "We have to stand by our console." They receive dead 360's up the Ying-Yang and we all know it! They have 2 of mines already.;)

my first Xbox 360 premium lasted about 18 months (3 ring of red) and my 2nd Xbox 360 lasted 22 days with a defective DVD drive.

i hope microsoft could release a better version of 360 that fix the ring of red

They'll be releasing the new "Falcon" chipsets soon. The smaller chips will produce less heat and noise.

Refurbished consoles coming from M$, now have a new heatsink attached to the GPU. The problem is, no one knows if they own the ones with a new heatsink. That is, if you open one up and void your warranty to find out.:(

Well it was none until... well, until a few minutes ago actually. I posted earlier in a thread about my xbox giving me an "Unreadable Disc" error every now and then. When I woke up this morning, I found that it keeps giving me the errors all the time. So I called Microsoft and my Xbox casket is on its way.

Thankfully my Xbox 360 was still under warrenty! And to think... my first Xbox, the one I bought launch day that I gave to my younger brother is still running better than ever! What are the chances?

I've only had one break on me and that was within the first 90 days. It was due to the HDD, somehow the thing was just screwy.

I'm on #2 and it's been fine for about 9 months now, no major problems, the only wrong with it is that it takes a few tries to close the disc tray and get the 360 to read the disc, but I'm not sending it in for something that minor.

I am now on my third one...here is hoping that the third time is the charm. Before my last one went out it was doing a lot of what yours is. It had a hard time closing the tray and I got several of those crazy white screen can't read the disc errors.

On my 6th one right now, and it's still going strong.

#1: RRoD after the first three months.

#2: Faulty disk tray, it wouldn't even come out at times which really pissed me off.

#3: RRoD within the first three days of getting it.

#4: The thing did not want to read Gears of War at all, any GoW game wouldn't be read by the thing.

#5: After a flight, whenever we closed the disk tray, it would open right after so we could not play any retail games on it. After awhile it stoped but whenever we put a disk in, it made a real bad scratching noise.

my first xbox i had from 9-6-06 to 12-30-07 failed due to a burned out laser in the dvd drive, i knew it was gonna happen sooner or later. i had heavey cooling mods on my xbox. the air comming out the back of my xbox was real cold, but the fans were real loud, but not noticible while gaming. but i had some trouble's loading games so i tuned the pot on the laser and had to tune it again and again untill it finally failed. so i am on 360 number 2 untill i can locate a used hitachi drive that i can take a laser out of.

that's how mine died with the rrod a few months ago.
i used the towel trick a few times and even took it all apart and cleaned it out/reapplied some arctic silver thermal paste. it worked for a week or two and then died totally.

Interesting Poll.

My first one broke in June 07, it was a pal system from The UK Release date. 3 RROD.
Still might consider fixing it.

Second xbox is working, but im having Disc Unreadable come up a fair bit on Assasins Creed, fifa 08, GRAW 2 and Forza MS 2. All discs are very clean and im wondering if its a DVD Drive fault?

Had my first one break about 2 months ago, it took them 6 weeks to get it together, and of course sent me a different one back. I had it set up for 2 days and the led lights in the front blew out. It still plays games so I haven't sent it back in. Support said if it isn't 3 red rings I would have to pay about 100(us) to have it fixed.

Had a launch console bought in Jan'06 die in in March'06 with the RoD.
Replacement the got the RoD again 6 months later.
Was replaced and that console's laserhead burnt out, I then complained to MS who sent me another new console.

I bought my wife a 360 in March 07, it died with the RoD in October'07 and was replaced.

On a side note my 360 with the nackered laser I fixed myself, cost me £10 to buy the laser, so I'm lucky enough to have 3 360's to use. LOL

Man, my friend's 360 broke on me. It had been buzzing and junk for a while. Then one night we were playing Halo 3 all evening. I was spending the night there, so I kept playing for a bit after he went to bed. The next day, he couldn't get ANY games to play. It just said "Unplayable Disc" for everything. Then he blamed it on me. All I did was play some campaign for a half hour. :(
