View Full Version : Collecting Souls/Jackanism FAQ

Q. How do I collect souls?
A. To collect souls you will first need to collect Shrunken Heads found through out each level. After you collect a Shrunken Head you must activate your Jackanism Sword by pressing Left Trigger, Right Trigger and the "A" button, simultaneously. Then, when you attack enemies, you will get their soul.

Q. At what point will I start to see the Shrunken Heads that I need to collect?
A. You will start to see the Shrunken Heads in the second level(Port Royal)

Q. There is a Jackanism Chest in the first level, how will I open it if there aren't any Shrunken Heads in the first level?
A. After you finish a level you will be able be given the option to go back and retry from the "Extras" menu at the start of the game. If you save a game while you have three Shrunken Heads then when you load that save you will still have them, no matter what level you select.

Q. When I activate my Jackanism Sword there is a green explosion around me and it usually kills the enemies, do these kills go towards my soul count?
A. No, unfortunately not. If you are specifically trying to collect souls then try not to activate your Jackanism near the enemies as they will not count.

Q. Besides finding Shrunken Heads inside of chests, is there any other way to get them?
A. Yes. You will sometimes find them sitting in the open but more importantly you can get them by killing enemies with your finishing moves. This will prove to be invaluable when trying to get your 100 souls.

Q. How many Shrunken Heads do I have to collect to activate my Jackanism Sword?
A. You only NEED to collect one Shrunken Head in order to activate your Jackanism Sword. However, the more Shrunken Heads you collect, the longer it will last.

Q. I activated my Jackanism Sword near the green chest but it did not open, why?
A. In order for you to open the chest you MUST collect three Shrunken Heads. It will not open with anything less than three.

Q. How many Shrunken Heads can I collect at one time and does it tell me how many I have?
A. The maximum amount of Shruken Heads that you can have at one time is 3 and you can see the amount you currently have in the upper right hand corner of your screen. One green dot above the picture of the Shrunken Head means you have collected one Shrunken Head, two green dots means two Heads collected but when you collect three Heads the eyes will light up in the picture of the Shrunken Head.

Q. Can I collect Shrunken Heads with anyone other than Jack?
A. No, Jack is the only one that can use the Jackanism Sword therefore he is the only one who can collect Shrunken Heads.

Q. What about the levels that I don't play as Jack, how will I open those Jackanism Chests?
A. Not to worry. If you don't play as Jack on a particular level than there will be no Jackanism Chest.

Q. To get 100 souls collected can I just repeat the same level over and over untill I reach 100?
A. Ok, here is the tricky part of collecting souls. The game will only take your highest soul count on each level. So, if you do {insert level here} once and collect 10 souls than you must collect more than 10 souls the next time for to you get credit.

I'll give you an example:
If you were {insert level here} earlier and lets say you collected 15 souls and you retry the level and get 14 more souls, you will not get credit for them because it only takes the higest amount of souls you get in in each level which was 15.

Ok, now, same situation but on the retry you get 16 souls. Then you will only get credit for 1 soul because you already have collected 15 souls.
So now here is the problem. There is no way to tell how many souls you already collected on a particular level so you will have to over estimate to play it safe. Ok, say you have 67 souls so you need 33 more and lets say you collected somewhere around 15 so far on {insert level here}. Round it up to 20 to play it safe and add that to the 33 you already need and there is your magic number of souls you need to collect. 53 souls on {insert level here}should get you the achievement, assuming that you only got somewhere around 15 on this level earlier.

The above example was assuming that you will try to get your remaining souls on one particular level.

Questions or comments welcome!

Marines only drop money, hearts, knifes and flintlock

Your best bet for getting heads from enemies are other pirates including the flying dutchmen crew. You need to be careful with these though because they also drop grenados which explode when you activate your move. Your best option is to try and claim these souls when not having to defend another crew member.

It is possible to get all 100 from one level, though it will take time.

1. Look for a level where you are only playing as Jack

2. Try and go into a fight with 3 heads already as you normally get swarmed first thing so plenty of kills quickly.

3. Use a sword, punch, sword combo as this fills your meter quickly

4. When your meter changes to a different colour you can use your special move.

5. keep attacking till you build up another 3 heads then run away to activate it.

6. Be sure not to kill the special character otherwise there will be no more respawns.

7. Just keep repeating till you hit your 100.

I am still trying to find the easiest and quickest level for doing this. It is possible to do this on the isla Cruces level at the end as long as you can keep both Elizabeth and Will alive through it all.

I got my last 53 souls in Port Royal at the end of the level when you control Jack and Will.

I only used 1 shrunken head at a time because the gurads won't spawn fast enough and I'd end up wasting my Jackanism.

So after I ran out of shrunken heads I did everything you need to do to finish the level except leave. I opened the gates and fired the cannon shot. What this does is stop them from spawning in droves and brings it down to 2 or 3(which makes it easy to keep Will alive).

From here I just killed them off and used a finishing move when ever possible and every few guards would drop a shrunken head. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Is it really as difficult as it seems to be to collect 100 souls? :(

I'll buy this game tomorrow, but you guys are frightening me..

Edit: Will "Collect 100 souls" achievement be the last achievement I'll try to get do you think?

I think thats a huge possibility :) and considering it is worth 150 points, it's one you can't afford to miss.

To answer your other question, most likely yes. It will probably be your last achievement.

You are in the best position then to collect souls. The less you have after finishing the game, the easier it is to go through again.

Crimzen has pointed out at least one level where you can score big and on another of his posts he lists a few other big scoring levels. Finally, you can get around 15-20 souls on the first level if you stand by the respawn doors and take out pirates as they come out. You can only do this AFTER completing the game since it gives you 3 skulls round the first chest. Just use one skull at a time on all the levels and you will do fine.

The big gain levels for me were Port Royal (the best), Shipwreck city, and Isla cruces its pretty easy to get around 30 on each of these and then fill out the remaining souls needed on the other jack levels.

10ish on prison fortress
10ish on kraken
20ish on davey jones locker

This achievement isn't that difficult just time consuming.

I have 80 now. I have problems with Port Royal. By the time I get to the first lever, Will is nearly dead. Any tips? I'll be trying it again later tonight and hopefully can get my other 20.

i just got this achievement. I had about 50 total on port royal and Isle Crues. Just get at least ten on the rest and you will be fine. You get this achievement at the stat screen after a level. So dont expect it mid-level.

Ok, when attempting this in the final area of Port Royal do everything you need to do to finish the level except leave.

In other words, open all of the gates, kill the 2 head guards and fire the cannon for the Pearl. What this does is stop the guards from spawning in droves and cuts it down to 2 or 3 at a time which makes it easy to keep Will alive.

Just got it. I got my last 20 souls on Crucus. Actually I had to get 35 to get my last 20. I just didn't kill the main guy in the last area (as Jack) kept doing my finisher and collecting heads.. Surprisingly, the A.I. was very forgiving and the other two characters barely got hurt. Thanks for all the help, especially to you Crimzen, your guide was fantastic.

I just finshied this achievement. It took about 2-3 hours.

I got 70 souls on Port Royal. I spent about 2 hours at the end of this map. I just killed the two guys upstairs back and forth until I got a special. Then I killed one of them with the special move.

I have to say you RARELY get any shrunken heads on that level. I went an entire 20-30 minutes without getting one shrunken head. Then I got like 4 in a row. So basically its all LUCK when you get shrunken heads..lol

Anyway,
This guide was helpfull and I'm glad the soul collecting is finally over. The game was GREAT and it only took me 3 days to get all the achievements. I guess its time to return it to hastings now:)

Ok, first off. Crimzen....your guide inspired me to register. I have always used bits and tids from guides before. This was really the first time I had the laptop on the whole game, reading word for word lol. So, thank-you. Second I think I have a pretty good strategy for this, if anyone wants to try it out. I have 5 souls left cuz I stopped to soon lol. I should wrap it up today. Contents below:

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/244/0Dc8P2Nl.jpg (http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/244/0Dc8P2Nl.jpgCapture) Capture 100 Souls - First I have tried just about every level and Isla Cruse was by far the fastest and easiest. The drops for the shrunken head are very common. I would say 1 out of 7. Port Royal is kind of slow shrunken head drops and the soldiers spawn to slow as well. Yes, you have Jack and Elizabeth to keep alive, but that is easy in these steps. I guess this just adds to what some people have mentioned.

1. Ok, First. Go directly to the end of the level. Right after Jacks ziplines down to the starting beach.

2. You will team up with Beth and Will here. Of course you have to keep them alive to be successful. You must kill about 10 of Davy Jones Soldiers in order to spawn the mini-boss. He will be very large an have a crablike body type. THE NEXT STEP IS CRUCIAL TO KEEP BETH AND WILL ALIVE.

3. You will need to grab Beth, or Will. Push down to cycle thru players. Then you will see 2 other players helping in the fight, that you can not control. These are NPC's, as we know, NPC's can not be harmed. So take advantage of it. Pintel and Ragetti (guy with wood eye) are fighting to the left of you usually. Head all the way to the left in the water....and make sure the mini-boss is following you. Kill Pintel or Ragetti's Davy Jones Soldier and then run back to the right. The NPC of Ragetti or Pintel should engage the mini-boss. This guy is the reason your other two PC's get hurt so fast.

4. After that, just assist the other 2 PC's (Beth or Will) with their kills. Make sure to use this button config, it is fast and builds your special up:

http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/7918/45203832cr9.jpghttp://img114.imageshack.us/img114/2122/38614422bg7.jpghttp://img114.imageshack.us/img114/7918/45203832cr9.jpg

5. With your special you should have a ton of Health Shield drops. So once and awhile Will or Beth can grab one and heal up. I went over an hour without having to heal them.

6. Once a Skull drops, just head up away from the drops. Because bombs drop sometimes. The Jackanism will blow them up. That can kill Will or Beth. So head up to the Palm Tree Line. After that 2 Davy Jones Soldiers will come at you. Dispatch them and kill 3 more. So that is 5 per turn. I got about 87 kills from this in less than an hour. Just rinse and repeat.

7. Just make sure not to kill the Mini-Boss and keep an eye on Will and Beths health. This should unlock for you very easily after an hour or an hour and a half. If you get stuck IM me on Live and I will help you out! Good Luck! Hope that helps.

Ash3n we must think alike.

I done mine this way also, I got just over 200 souls (to see if it could be done on just that bit).

Once you hit around 80-90 souls it starts to become abit jumpy due to so many flintlocks and armour laying around on the floor, but not to jumpy to finish off all of your 100 souls within' that little section.

Is The Achievements Easy On This Game

Nine Inch Nate
06-19-2007, 07:33 PM
yes this game is a very easy 1000. even the 100 souls achievement didnt take me all that long to do. i think alot of the people that are posting how they got it made things alot more complicated than they were to get this achievement. if you think about it there's 8 levels that you can get souls in. if you divide that by the 100 souls you need to get you get 13. so in very simple terms average 13 souls per level and you will be fine. you can get at least 3 shrunken heads per level and easily collect 4-5 if not more souls per head. all in all it took me about 3 days to complete all the achievements (obviously not 3 full days i have a life... so if you condense it to real hours it was probably 12-14 hours)

a useful tip when collecting souls on the Isla Cruse. Take Will or Elizabeth to the right side of the screen, (where the hidden piece is at) climb the rope, pull the lever, then jump down and go inside the cave that is now open. Wait inside the cave and the boss will follow you. when the gate closes exit up the wall leaving the boss trap. take your guy around to the front of the gate and switch to another. The boss cannot attack. He just runs in place and your guy cannot attack him. No more worries about keeping people alive or killing the boss by mistake.

naptownsteeler

they still count. but your fifty will only go up if you collect more this time than you did the first time playing that board. It will show up after the board is finished. There will be a plus sign next to you total number if its improved.

This is copied and pasted from a post I made on Gamefaqs with 1 minor correction: Use of the word shrunken heads instead of skulls.

First off, I'd like to give credit to Crimzen dragon and Ash3n. Crimzen for starting the FAQ, and Ash3n for pointing this area out. You can find the original thread here.
http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/showthread.php?t=27485
(edit) Also Credit to naptownsteeler. You're strategy is very similiar to mine. I infact did it your way first but I had trouble keeping both Will and Elizabeth at the gate with the boss. Pintel and Ragetti would head over to the gate after the boss, and only one of my partners would stay with them. The other would keep drifting back to the fight with Jack. I wrote the strategy early 8:30am in the morning with no sleep. I quickly skimmed through this thread yesterday and I guess I passed over your post. But credit goes where credit is due, and even though I didn't see your post I don't want to seem like I'm stealing idea's.

My way is slightly different however. The level is Isla Cruse. The area is the very last part where you are fighting off Davy Jone's lackeys. Instead of planting the boss on Pintel or Ragetti, I tried a different route.

As soon as you take the zip line with Jack at the end towards the beach, switch to either Will or Elizabeth. Then climb up the rope to the cave where the lever is that opens the gate on the beach that leads to Calypso's piece. Activate the lever, and as soon as the gate opens, switch to another character.. I.E. If you activated the lever with Will, switch to Elizabeth or vice versa.

Once you've switched, head immediately into the now open cave as quick as possible and walk to the far back of the cave towards the climbable wall. Once there, your other character that activated the lever should of dropped down and should be near the cave. Switch to that character and quickly run into the cave. Keep in mind, while you've switched, the AI of the first character you put in the cave has already taken over and will be trying to leave the cave. If you were quick enough, they should still be in there, if not put them back in immediately before the gate closes. If you need to buy some time, keep switching back and forth while both characters are in the cave to keep them from moving out until the gate slams shut.

Now that you have both Will and Elizabeth trapped behind the gate, you're free to do as you please without risking their lives or worrying about their health. Proceed to killing the Davey Jone's crew until the boss spawns. Now here's the best part. As soon as the boss spawns, He'll circle behind the shipwreck in the water next to him and he'll head directly to the gate where Will and Elizabeth is trapped. And they will attempt to attack each other but no damage will be done whatsoever. There is also appears to be a zone line a few feet away from the gate, which means no other mobs will go to the gate, even if you try to make them follow you there.

Now that you have Will, Elizabeth, and the Boss permanently out of the way, you are free to do your deed. Combo up the mobs to raise your meter and do your specials to make shrunken heads drop so you can collect all the souls you want. You can effectively get 0 to 100 souls in about a hour give or take depending on your luck with shrunken head drops. Just be careful not to use Jackanism near the piles of grenades that will accumulate like Ash3n suggested, but fear not for blowing Will or Elizabeth away because they are safely tucked away. ;) After you have enough souls, just go to the gate, stun the boss, and special... Hello 150 points.

Also note, doing Ash3n's version or mine, there is a possibility of your game freezing because of all the health-ups, pistols, and grenades that are dropped. If you're doing my strategy, I suggest shooting off your pistols to clean up a little, and or using jackanism a few feet away from the grenades to blow them off so there isn't so much items crowding the area. When I was trying Ash3n's Strategy, my stuff froze while doing a jackanism because of the stuff that accumulated. Then I tried my strategy with clearing here and there and it worked brilliantly. With Ash3n's strategy, however, keep in mind that health ups are also random. He said he had so many health-ups that he could effectively keep Will and Elizabeth healed all the time, which worked for me too for a while. Then I hit a drought of health ups and nearly had two characters died... after some bobbing and weaving I managed to get health up on both, but that's when I used Jackanism and my 360 went poot.

Any rate, both strategies work. I found my alternative was less stressful however, with the fact of not having to worry about your team dying or accidentally killing the boss.

I'm pretty sure I found the easiest way to 100 souls. Go to Port Royale. When you have the first sword fight, punch all of the pirates to death. This should boost up your whatever meter. When it fills enough, finish off someone. Every 5 or so drops a shrunken head. Run up the balcony, wait for all the enemies to follow, and jump off the other side. The enemies will run around and take the stairs. Use this time to activate the shrunken heads, and dispatch everyone. You should get about 6 every time, and make sure to not kill the lieutentant or whatever. Rinse and repeat until you get your 100.

Playing the first level I got 15 on that, go back after you've gotten the Jackanism there and grab one skull at a time. Right before the groups of guards come out use it. I got 5 on each section, just run back and grab another skull once it's done.

Yay! I finally got this acheivement. Now at a full 1000/1000.

One thing that I noticed when doing to Isla Cruse method, with either Will and Elizabeth or the boss traped in the cave, is let your charge bar in the top left corner fill all the way up before doing the special move. It seems you will get a shrunken head more often or not.

I've got a tip to add to this that I didn't see in this thread or any of the others. I found it out the hard way... ;)

When doing the finishing move to get items to drop don't just quickly press LT and then one of the finishing buttons but take a second (or less :)) to look which button has a red circle around it. Press this button and you are guaranteed a "bonus" drop. I found that it still takes some time to get all the shrunken heads needed but it speeds up the process as otherwise I would go quite some time without getting any extra's.

Did anybody else also have this?

Congrats on the full 1000. I got mine over the weekend using the Will & Elizabeth cave method on Isla Cruses as well. I understand what you are saying with the special bar, but I did not have that experience. I would always try to get the bar maxed out, but it didn't seem to have any affect on what items dropped from the enemy. Most of the time, I noticed that the shrunken head would drop when the bar was half full. I honestly think that it is completely random what item will drop and I think that there is a greater percentage of bombs, guns and hearts over shunken heads.

There was a time when I was boosting that I wasn't getting any heads for about 10 minutes. I persisted though and got 90 kills on that level which got me the achievement.

Big big thanks for this, also thanks to crimzens guide i managed to easyily get through the game. Currently on 92 souls just going for my last 8 on Davy Jones locker.

EDIT: I found Tortuga a good level for mopping up your last few souls seeing as it has many heads in the chests and a fair few enemys to kill in bunches.

I was playing on Isla Cruse and I did kill the boss on that level with the shrunken heads. When the stats screen came up it said I had /+100 for the level. (I can't remember the number in front of the /)
I didn't get the achiever. Is this because I killed the boss like everyone has said?

I found it hard to keep the mini-boss alive for any decent length of time, and even when you do you can end up in a fight for ages just waiting (and hoping) for another shrunken head to drop.

I found Davy Jones Locker to be a good mission to build up a lot of souls, though I needed to play it several times to get the most from it. I found that using heads individually where possible was enough to collect up to 3 souls, rather than saving up 2 or 3 for a longer jackanism, but not having so many people very close by to kill.

I've got every achievement so far but the 100 souls.. I'm working on that one now.. My question though is right now I have 57 souls.. but I don't feel like playing anymore.. the game doesn't allow me to save at any of the menu screens, so if i wanted to come back to this later with my 57 souls what do I do.. yeah I know it's probaly a stupid question.. but i've worked most of the morning on this and just don't wanna fool with it anymore right now and i'm afraid of urning the game off and losing wha ti worked at today already. I had 39 last night but when i loaded the game today I only had 20 something

the /100 is like 50/100
which mean you have collected 50 souls out of 100

I tried this many of times (around 30?) and not once did I get a skull drop. Secondly you say pirates, the time you fight pirates there's no "boss" guy so they all die and not respawn, therefore I take it you mean the smartly dressed people right? I did as said but never seeing any Shrunken Heads. :(

Looks like I'll be trying it another way.
