A man has died after falling on his head while competing in the American craze of "battle dancing", police said.

Robert Stitt, 48, was attempting to outdo a rival by performing a forward flip when he was injured.

Fellow dancers, who were watching Mr Stitt perform to a James Brown song, gave him first aid but failed to save his life.

“It was just two guys dancing. Everybody was laughing,” Mr Stitt’s friend John Boxley said. “The other guy had just flipped in the air and he wanted to go one better.”

Police in New Britain, Connecticut, said Mr Stitt went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead a short time at a local hospital.

A spokesman said: “The victim was part of a group drinking and dancing in a parking lot. It appears the victim died after attempting a particularly difficult dance move.”

Battle dancing is a craze in which individuals and groups meet in large open spaces and take turns to perform ever more spectacular dance moves.

During the 1980s, breakdancing was the style most commonly used in battles. The phenomenon has since evolved with music trends and now takes in a wide range of improvised styles.

The craze is closely tied to hip-hop culture and also draws on funk and jazz music.

interesting. i wonder if the guy that did the first flip is a lil self-consciece now. head full of "that coulda been me" thoughts. gotta wonder if he'll continue to dance to "honor" his fallen friend or if he'll stop dancing and consider this accident a "warning from god". or or or or or maybe he'll decide to try Krump dancing now

That's too bad especially since they were doing something fun and not illegal in New Britain. I lived in Connecticut for 25 years of my life and not too many good thing happen in New Britain.

First thing that popped in my head as well. It's no wonder he didn't make it the full 360, you're not exactly that limber at 48.

My thoughts exactly, at 48 you shouldn't be break dancing, you should be talking about the "good 'ol days" and complaining about kids these days:p

Yeah you see this kind of stuff in Leeds all the time, after a few cheap pints and a couple of games of bingo at the local Working Men's Club all the oldies hit the streets and some get involved in this kind of 'dance off'. It's a sight to behold I tell you! :p

Trust me on this one, rap battles are still popular. I single-handedly revived hip-hop in science class in early January. I'll see if I can post lyrics if you want.
