Is there a good way for Big to initiate the fish catching sequence?

It seems almost every time I try, the fish starts nibbling on the bait, then immediately loses it for no apparent reason. Is there something I should press when this is happening? Do I have to get lucky and have them turned away from me to even get close?

Big's missions are ridiculous. I've already A ranked everything else, but this fishing nonsense confuses the hell out of me and I can't even begin to understand it.

When the fish nibbles you are supposed to tilt the control stick left or right (It's like tugging as you would if fishing in real life). It will then say "HIT" and you can try to reel the fish in.

Yeah, I happened to find this by mistake, I have no idea if it's mentioned in the "HOW TO" section of the game or not. Anyways, I've been stuck on getting a 2000g fish on Emerald Coast. been at it for 2 hours. already finished ALL the other A-rank missions.

It seems half the time I grab a 2000g fish it decides to head toward me but the game wont reel it cus it hasn't stopped, then the fish passes me and heads out to open ocean 25-30m away and I'm stuck struggling to reel it all the way back.
Generally the line snaps and I lose a life, but on the rare occasions I get it within 4 meters of Big, it suddenly dissapears, and Big picks up his rod and continues swimming as if I just reeled in nothing.

its actually left stick down. just hold it a second until it says hit.
