No I am not joking.
President Obama has announced the launch of the National STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Video Game Challenge.
The challenge takes the form of two separate competitions. The first is a youth prize, to be awarded to middle schoolers who design their own educational video games. The submissions for middle school students can be either a playable game, or an on-paper design document with a total prize pool of $50,000. The second challenge is for actual developers (or undergrad/grad students) to create their own educational video games for young children.

And this is why I hate David Cameron.

How many "Educational" games are in Xbox? Not alot. That's why he said that. He wants us to put away Halos and Gears of Wars. Not educational games.

True, but how many of us here as well as young people actually want to play a truely "educational" game. Most of us play games for entertainment not education.
Also there would have to be a shown form of a way of profit to even develop this type of game. I'm all for it if they can make a game that is fun and educational for kids, not to much of a fan of the govt trying to really mess with the videogame market though.

I'm actually surprised, now that I think about it, about the lack of children's educational games. Most of them are on PC and are complete and utter crap.
I'd actually like to see how this turns out. Maybe we can finally have the first educational game that's actually fun. I mean, my own little sister doesn't play the ones my dad got for her. They're like something out of the 80s.

I think educational video games are useless. We already have a shitload of books to learn from; we don't need our games to be ruined. It'd be like having school at home. TERRIBLE IDEA (IMO).
But maybe if they made like...a game that teaches you about war. We already have those though, don't we?

I'm not surprised about the lack of educational games. Some of them are beyond brutal. I can't believe Nintendo allowed Mario is Missing and Mario's Time Machine to be created.
No one who has a real console wants to play educational games. That's where those special consoles like Leap Frog shine because their educational games are better put together than the ones on real consoles.

I think it's a pretty good idea. Educational games are usually pretty shitty but I think it would be a good experience for kids to make their own games. They might find out they like it and decide to join the expanding field of video game development.

Exactly.
In my opinion though, games and education should stay apart. Whenever they collaborate we get fuckfests like Mario's time machine.

Nothing funny about this, ladies.
I'm 13, and can already make games.
And when i say games, i don't mean game maker.

not to piss anyone off, but obama is a retarded douche bag. although mayde kids should have some input on the games they play. Obama shouldn't have any say in anything that goes on, he'll just make it un fun.
