The new wave of consoles has been out for a while, with the battle for the best next-generation console being fierce between the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3, and the outsider – the Nintendo Wii. Which one of these consoles will win the battle in the long run? Nobody can say for sure at the moment. What we can do is take a quick look at all three consoles, and let you know what we think….

Great article Minty - correctly highlighting that the impending European failure of PS3 is due to alienating their market rather than any failings of the console itself. Top Job, now have a beer :drunk

It appears that you were fair with your decision and I applaud that. I will not be buying a PS3 either, due to price and the attitude they have shown on all fronts. I have been able to get some wrist flicking time in on the Wii and I must say that I don't find it all that fun. The idea is awesome, but the execution is lacking. Maybe if the Big N had games I just had to play like they did when I was a youngster then maybe I would think differently. Plus there are no achievements!:)
Thanks for the read.

This Article couldn't be put together any better. I myself am on my 3rd XboX 360 but never the less tire of it. Also "had" a Nintendo Wii. I Loved The Wii but did not really have a purpose for it as my 360 was always being played. Weeks had gone by and the Wii (which I didn’t have a problem with) collected dust. My Room mate also had a Wii and has been a more than avid Nintendo Fan for years and years. After playing my Xbox he got hooked (Mostly for the achievement points) sadly we both traded our Wii’s in for credit toward an Xbox 360 Elite System. I loved the Wii, Just not as much as I love the 360… I believe if your an avid xboxer then that's the only system that you need, as it will grant you with everything you need from a system and otherwise......

I'll be getting a Wii in the future, but only when Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is bundled with it because I have to know how the trilogy ends :D

Great article, completely fair. We bought a PS3 but it's been traded in for a Wii. Now we just need to wait for the shop to get some in...

I'm Australian, and Sony have done the same thing to us over here. And with the fact that GTA4 and many other games are not just for the playstation i will be sticking to the 360.
I have a Wii also, while my girlfriend enjoys playing all the old Nintendo games on it, the novelty of it wore of after a few weeks. If a developer would make a decent game for this console, that isn't just a bunch of mini games i could change my mind.

great article Minty! (Y) nicely said!
i have owned a Wii also.. because i am a huge Zelda fan.. but after completing that game there was no game that i would like to play.. so i sold em... but when Mario Kart is launched i will get another Wii!
The Wii was only € 250 for playing Zelda... but i wont get a PS3 only or the F1 game! no way! to expensive!
Keep up the good work!

See what Nintendo doesn't realize about their systems is that eight months after their release just about everybody who wanted one bought one. Then they wonder where did their sales go.

That was a great article expressing all the right points. I am infact an owner of an xbox ( on my second), a Wii, and a ps3. I play my Wii maby once a week, and the ps3 maby 5 minutes in a month. But nothing can handle the perfectness i find in my xbox, its just something no competeitor can match up to

i do not care for Wii ... i played splinter cell DA and what can i say omg AWFULL it's Dreadfull i have to put my arm up to make sam jump and the move the remote around to make him look around and i hate it i don't care for cenoring in this game ... now i played Wii Sports and i however had a blast with that .. but looking at Wii games .. i find it too kiddy for me to me in my mind nintendo calls everyone over buy if people wanna play things more mature ( don't get me wrong by saying their is no mature games for Wii cause their is some but red steel or whatever it's called doesn't grab my attention ) now back to the controller ... the size of the remote is almost identicle to my DVD Remote controll now their is one racing game to use the controller as a wheel and you know what that's nice but i don't really care and the other big issue is ... they ruined zelda for me i hate to say it i was a big fan of theirs but i did not care for the game play in Majoras mask or gamecubes windwaker ( awful graphics ) and for twilight princess i thought WOW this is gonna be cool till i see link turn into a .. wolf ? come on !!! what next metroid not only morhing into a doll but morphing into a Jaguar i think it's a bit silly and nintendo died to me when N64 came out my favorite games on N64 were goldeneye , quake , zelda OFT , dukenukem and mario 64
and now for the better systems
Xbox 360 ... you look beautiful but if you do one slight thing wrong their does your profile and possibly game saves as well and the 3 blinking lights of death which happened to a friend of mine 2 times but fixed it free but the first time he sent money to buy a 2 year warranty .. they kept some money for a warranty no more then 6 and a half months later same issue and called them up and they tell him that he doesn't have a 2 year warranty and that conversation folks lasted 20 mins to a half hour and he asked for the supervisor and they said we will talk to him for you 10 mins later they come back to phone saying they sent the money back but the warranty for the money they kepts was for a short period of time and now i think microsoft is sly and sneeky i say BEWARE they may fool you for buying something that you actually didn't reason for not giving him 2 year warranty was cause they fixed it for free and they didn't think he needed the 2 year warranty .. now with the problems people have been having with the system you think other wise and besides if you want something to buy and you send the money they shouldn't refuse it. now for the games i wish their was demos for every games on marketplace but their isn't which is a drawback for me cause i wanna see what certain games are like and i can't till i rent or buy it and i know it better to fork over $6 for 3 days then not play at all but i can get a game for 1 day for 99 cents and that is enough time for me to decide what to get for a game and they don't got a big selection of 360 games and most games don't grab me .. and infact i have gotten 10 gmaes for 360 1 was for my birthday and 2 came with my 360 and now the other ones i bought myself online or from another person very cheap and out of those games i have played 5 games out of 10 and gears of war HASN'T seen the likes inside my machine i have it for the collection and having issues like having 2 corrupt profiles and 1 times lost game data for the games i played to replay them again was some Fluke accident cause the xbox messed up and had no other way to turn it of but the main button on the system and another peeve i have for the 360 is all old xbox games will NOT play for the 360 and i think it's dumb and for the ones that can you cannot save your games which i think is messed up and a big falure on their part .. console was made too fast to ship out to beat sony ... all i can say is if microsoft didn't think sony was a threat then why release it right away to only have alot shipped back the same week ???
and now for the PS3
i do not own one but i play one at a friends house and so far i thought it was cool .. don't care for the whole Blu-Ray factor and i will stick with my dvd player but give things time things drop in price ( talking about Blu-Ray movies and FYI i'm not anal about pizles and issus related stuff or how much sharper it is to other DVD version and i also have not seen a blu-ray or HD-DVD play on dvd before but i'm not fussy to me it's just getting the movie that counts ) now i played motorstorm and Resistance demo ( which i thought kicked ass ) i also played Geji which i wasn't fussy for .. and i haven't play but don't care for the armored core games but i thought Oblivion on it was better and i believe most or some people have seen the diffrence between xbox 360 and PS3 version and i think PS3 comes out on top it's almsot the same but in the video one specific point the guy walks over the hill to come to a Fort in the game i believe it was and for the PS3 when you reached the top of the hill right in front of yours eyes the fort is their for the 360 you have to take about 5 steps for it to generate in front of you but for me it's all about games not graphics but PS3 regenerates quicker now people may say ( 360 you can buy items with points ) who cares !!! horse armor to me is useless and i'm happy with what the game has to offer and people boo the PS3 version cause it doesn't have the marketplace to buy stuff and i think it's perfectly fine cause i say: be happy with what you get the game took a long time to be made from morrowind from that being said i also applaude the PS3 plaing PS2 and PSX games !!! and the other big thing for it is .. ( drum roll please ) * Drum Roll * you can save PSX and PS2 games on the HD !!!!! 360 cannot do this and my friend has had a PS3 since launch and has had no issues with it ( froze once or twice but 360 freezes too ! ) and for you people who thing the world of purchasing new stuff for Oblivion is a big factor or any other game ... PS3 can Number crunch FASTER then a PC and help people with cancer and yet no one seems to mention that .. who wants a system to cure cancer .. well i do cause when i am not playing it or when i am out for the day i can leave it on and get some progress done on it * it's better then nothing *
now i hate nintendo , i like the 360 but some stuff i don't care for like ( extra items maps or characters in game so much i think it should be free but should not tip the scales in favor for 360 over PS3 ) and the 360 is fun too but not many of the games interest me and it been out over a year , now for the PS3 i am sure their is isues with it but i have not seen any it may cost a hell of a lot more but it's a very powerfull machine ! and as for the controllers it's good it's simple not so many buttons as the 360 but after a while i got use to the xbox controller but i do not care for rumble it's cool but it's about the game not a controller
this is my view between the three systems and i like PS3 and 360 but hate nintendo ( not a fan boy for any system )

Kudos for saying the truth. The fact is the PS3 delivers with all the techy-crap (1080p, Blu-Ray, etc.), but does NOT deliver on the games. Aside from Resistence and MotorStorm, there's nothing on the PS3 you can't get on the 360. In fact, the multi-platform releases are actually better on the 360 than the PS3. There's nothing on the system now that makes it worth getting, and with so many "exclusives" jumping to the 360, there won't be much of a reason to get it later.

Yeah good point but remember these on ps3 are launch titles and "will" get better personally some of the games on the ps3 look better in HD and the new tekken: dark ressurrection looks awesome! " £6.99 too! " on download... much better value than any arcade game....
the 360 achievement system is a force to be reckoned with..
and sony are missing a trick if they cant initiate a similar system
The ps2 controllers in my opinion are the best and have only improved to being much lighter and the bluetooth system is a great feature..Many people that are saying the ps3 costs too much, well quite a few people have had broken xboxs- as many as 5 for some,my brothers on no.2 and overall have to pay more money in the long run... xboxlive is an experience you have to pay for , the online playstation network psn is free and gives you access to an internet browser.we have been bookmarking our fave sites on psn and this eliminates the need to fire up your p.c.... "sweet"
we also can connect wirelessly out of the box or with the bundled ethernet cable via your router.. the ps3 has still much to come being a new console and will eventually over take the xbox , just maybe not in terms of units sold, in terms of quality.
In terms of quality i agree the 360 is the best at present but in europe too this is not a new thing regarding paying over the odds this has been happening for decades...... i can remember now for years also that because these machines are made /concieved in japan or america it is in a manufactured state for the ntsc market and delays are usually for the conversion into the european pal market..... hence us europeans waiting, when english games are made they hit europe first and the ntsc markets last....
I guess what we need is european next gen console so that maybe a little parity is restored!!!!
new updates are making the ps3 a good place to be online with each update improving the experience.
to be honest we own both systems and therefore probably can give a more balanced opinion..
to play a ps3 for 12hrs hardly constitutes a balanced argument
however i agree on many points- not all...
the ps3 is more of a risk at the price point but will offer the best in time
and sat next to the 360 looks more of a quality product
ps3 imo is more future proof too... just my opinion
am sure most gamers just want to be playing the best and in both ps3/360 you will do this, 360 is in terms of value and completion superior especially regarding value but remember sony has taken on the likes of sega and attained market status with playstation,ps2 and now has to play catch up with a very strong product in microsoft .
would it be fair to summarise the ps3 as more of an entertainment system than a games machine?
heres another example for you to maybe add parity to the two main machines
1] xbox 360 premium plus hd dvd player £399 best deal [new]
2] sony ps3 blu ray built in 60gb version £399 best deal. [new]
its a bit like a debate on the lancer evo v subaru impreza
around a track the evo seems to have it, just check out youtube for the topgear tests/fifth gear etc.. but in terms of cost the scooby wins
and most people agree
i would personally argue the fight for both and love to have either but only be able to give a balanced view if owned both.. which will never happen!!!! wtf!
just my overall opinion -- shoot me down non ps3 owners..!!!

My cousin has the 360 and decided to buy the PS3. He now regrets that he ever bought the PS3 because it has been collecting dust and thats it. He played Resistance for a little bit and just wasnt as impressed as he was with the 360. So the winner is 360. He finally sold his PS3 and bought a 32 inch HDTV with the money. He is so glad that it is out of his house and he has learned his lesson on just buying things for kicks and giggles.

this is so true. the achievement system really makes me wanna play games until i can get every last point physically.
i recently got a PS3, coz i got it cheap from my cousin (who was one of the many who bought 2 thinking they would re-sell and make money!!!), and only have played resistance...and coz theres no achievement system, im not totally bothered with the single player game, and just play online (and badly at that - hah!!)
for me the 360 wins hands down, and if it wasnt for cheap blu-ray imports that work in the EU machines, then i dont think i would bother much with the PS3.

I own a 360 and got a wii last week. I was very dubious about getting a wii but decided to give it a go when I saw them in stock and I have to say I absolutely love it. Who knows what I'll think of it in a month when I've finished Zelda but so far I can't see my 360 getting much playtime.
PS3 atm hasn't got much appeal for me but I have no doubt in my mind that I'll get one eventually. It's gonna take a few killer exclusives and I'll get one. Little big world is certainly looking good.
So for now I'm a wii60 owner. But later this year/early next year I'll become a PSWii60 owner.

I love my Ps3, Im not a halo fan. I dont know why i just dont find it attactive. Im a hardcore MGS fan but there are rumors that Kojima is being forced to make MGS4 on x360 aswell! but he says its a Ps title and will remain a PS title. I hope so cause if it was on both consoles i would have to buy 2 copies, one to enjoy on PS3 (the only way MGS should only be played) and one for 360 for achs.
Somthing in my gut says one day near Christmas, ill log on to XBL and ill see MGS4 download trailer now! and my heart will sink.... and ill cry and then jesus will rise from the grave and all is lost for ps3 :(

Great article Minty!
I am a PSWii60 owner. I own all 3 next-gen consoles and they all have their pros and cons.
Now this is how I view the 3 consoles:
Sony PS3
I use it for watching Blu-Ray movies and listening to music, more so than playing games. I own more Blu-Ray movies than I do games. PSN(PlayStation Network) needs to pick up the pace and the missing pieces if they want to be successful like Xbox Live.
Microsoft Xbox 360
My MAIN console. I love it, my bros love it, and so does my girlfriend. Can't get enough of Xbox Live and Unlocking Achievements. I currently own 40+ retail games and I have a few HD-DVD movies that I play on the HD drive. Can't live without it...I'm on my 3rd 360 already. How many more times must it die on me?
Blu-Ray Vs. HD-DVD
I have the best of both worlds. This is like going back to VHS Vs. Betamax. Which format will win? I don't care as long as they keep coming out with great movies.
Nintendo Wii
It's fun for the whole family! What I like most about it is the innovation. It's different and Nintendo is sending a message to rivals, Sony and Microsoft. What it lacks, is great games. You need games that can back up your console. I don't want to be stuck playing Pokemon or some other kiddie game for the next couple years.
Who will dominate and win this console war? It's too soon to know. We'll have to see in a few years. Just my 2 cents...
BTW, can I steal that Wii60 logo off your article, Minty? It looks much better than my Wii60 logo. If not, it's ok.

I agree with most things he's said here... I'd like to add that the PS3 also doesn't have a removable HD and you can't resell games. However, I disagree that games are more expensive in the UK. I'm talking with my friend right now and he says that DEF Jam is only 7 pounds. That's what... Less than 20 Canadian? Most games here are still over 40. Good article.

Def Jam is only £7?? Cheapest I can see it is £22 and thats on ebay.
Id say most people throught Europe will use play.com. which is selling it for £40 http://www.play.com/Games/Xbox360/4-/3305695/-/Product.html?searchstring=def+jam&searchsource=1
Games like Guitar Hero are £65, which is $130 US. So yeah, I can say that games are more expensive over here. Def Jam isnt a good example as its crap, noone buys it and they have to sell it cheap.

PS3 has a very removeable HDD and very easily upgradeable. Something that the 360 doesn't have. You have to buy MS's 120GB HDD which gives them the ability to charge whatever they like for it and I can guarantee it will be a lot more than a 120GB SATA laptop hard drive will cost. And not only that but by upgrading to the 120GB HDD you lose the ability to play Arcade games and DLC offline, you must be signed into XBL to play them which is just stupid.
The upgradeable HDD is one of the few advantages the PS3 has over the 360.
As for games not being resold I wasn't aware of this. Are they locked to the console or something? In which case how do PS3 game rentals work?

Having got all 3 machines i can safely say that 360 is the better. PS3 Lacks a little something i can't put my finger on. Maybe it's the fact that most HDTV's don't play in 1080p only 1080i. You need a top of the range HDTV costing over £700.
So that's graphics out then??????
Also the Wii rocks. It's like the old days when you used to get you mates round to kick ass on Lotus Esprit challenge on the amiga but now when you lose you can whack them with the remote. I have never laughed so hard playing a console.
Anyway Fair points to minty and an awesomely written piece mate.

Game rentals work as i rented ridge racer 7 and the HDD is much more powerful than the 360's...

Wrong answer!! i've rented and bought a couple of ps3 games and sent back and sold motorstorm..If you download a game from the PSN such as "blast factor" or "Gripshift" you can't refund them and neither can you refund games you bought from the xbox live arcade....

I had All 3 Systems at one Point I love my 360 one of the best systems and controllers i ever had/played the Ps3 has potential but Sony keeps shooting itself in the foot by losing exclusives and the steep Price tag
The Wii honestly is a gimmicky piece of shit. It's Got limited appeal all games will eventually play and do the same gimmicky cheesy thhings and it WILL be just like the gamecube but after this Nintendo will be just a game developer.

I definately think Sony's got it all wrong with the european launch of PS3. Since I am spanish, retail cost of the console (only the 60Gb model available here) is 600€. Sorry I can't convert to english pounds... but hey guys, did u ever think about changing into euro? :-P
The fact is that I thought that's really too much for a console; and I am one of them who bought (well, actually my wife did xD) the Xbox and PS2 at 450 €... So since a friend travels often to Hong Kong I asked him if he could bring me the console from there. It cost me 370 € (so 230 € LESS); the only drawback are not the games (right now, all of them are region free) but the Blu-Ray region since is locked to "A" (Japan, China, North America & Canada). So I cannot buy any movie here until there is a freeloader or something like that. But it's ok, I usually buy at dvdboxoffice.com , and films there come both in english AND spanish, region A. Last week I ordered Reservoir Dogs, which BTW was out of catalogue here.
So I have my PS3 now, connected through HDMI... but no games. Honestly, there's no single game I feel atracted to right now, so I consider it some kind of early investment that I've done and gives me the chance to review PS3 games as well (I write for a videogames magazine as well).
I mostly play with my Xbox 360, but now is on vacation in Germany due to the TRLoD. So I exchanged my Wii (shut down until I finished Zelda weeks ago) with the 360 of a friend o' mine to keep playing (and reviewing) games, currently Command & Conquer 3.
Wii is, today and IMHO, too much of a casual console to play with. It lacks the solid catalogue Xbox is gathering that would keep me in front of TV for... too long at night xD Hope this changes within the next few months but in 3 days i was already missing my 360 and it's been 3 weeks now without my Wii and I don't care that much...

I'm surprised to see all the Wii bashing here (do you have no soul?!), but each to their own I guess. My brother picked one up last week, and i've not had so much offline multiplayer fun since the days of Halo 1. Not tried anything bar Wii Sports & Play, but Billiards, Baseball (damn that's hard), Tennis etc etc are hours of fun. Even merely using the GUI is a joy :/
Sorry I can't convert to english pounds... but hey guys, did u ever think about changing into euro? :-P
Convert to an inferior currency? Never! ;) Indeed your PS3's a worthy investment, the games will come eventually... fear not.

I had a Wii for a while before selling it to help pay for a laptop. I didn't sell it because I didn't like the system. In fact, I rather enjoyed playing Wii Sports, Zelda, and WarioWare Smooth Moves.
I played Trauma Center for a while and had good fun with it, as well as Red Steel. The learning curve on both those games is kind of steep, but you can get used to it.
I fully plan to buy a Wii again whenever I get more money to spend on stuff like that. Hopefully by that time the third party games for the system will be worthwhile instead of ports from other systems with motion controls tacked on haphazardly.
As for the PS3, there has not been a reason to convince me into buying one at this time....Resistance: FoM is just not enough right now.

i'm pretty sure there either redoing the PS3 or cancelling it
Redoing as in shrinking? like the PS2 > Slimline. Very likely but not anytime soon.
As for cancelling that would be financial suicide for Sony. Only reason they would do that is if they have gone completely bankrupt. The PlayStation brand name is Sony's moneymaker, without they will be nothing. If they cancel it now after investing so much time and money into it they might as well start giving away Vaio's with Happy Meals.
Anyway whenever you make a bold post like that it's always good to back it up with a source. Because both of the things you said sound like BS to me.

The PS3 is too expensive for the casual gamer and the fact there are no top notch games available at the moment means its not really drawing in the masses. The reason the PS2 did so well was because it was cheap enough for anyone to afford and had a big catalogue of games to appeal to everyone, whereas the PS3 seems aimed predominantly at techno freaks who HAVE to own the latest kit. The games at the moment do not justify the price by any stretch of the imagination.
The Wii appeals a lot more and its successful as people see it as the ideal social gaming machine. It can truly appeal to any age and its easy to see why it luring in people who didn't give two figs about games previously. However, you have to question how much software they will shift. As people are buying the hardware and are always ready to whip it out when friends are round but how many of these families will buy a lot of games - they'll have one or two max and most will probably stick with Sports and Play for ages.
Even solo games like Zelda, while a great novelty at the start, will lose their shine as the whole appeal is with the new control system. What will the next Zelda offer? As by then the controls will no longer have the originality appeal to them.
Just can't see the Wii offering the long term pull that other consoles do and I think the PS3 needs to set its sights a bit lower. Can't believe Sony are trying to use it to win the next DVD war by forcing Blu Ray on everyone.

The PS2 had LESS games at launch than the PS3.
In reality the PS2 and PS3 launches have been very similar. The only reason Sony are getting any bad press is the price. The console itself is very well made and very well prepared for an uphill battle, and despite not selling 100 billion consoles a day it has been a very successful launch.
The PS3 may not be flying off of store shelves as quick as the wii but they are selling pretty steadily, and that's all Sony needs. A steady fanbase that's growing in size.

...With the exception of the GPU, which, lets face it, appears to be (on paper at least) very much a case of last generation tech, bar the RAM speed... It's very G70-ish. It'll still do amazing things, the point is that sadly it doesn't reflect the rest of the units leap in technology. Anyway, nitpicking aside, you're spot on.

I know the launches were similar, what I meant to say was that over time the PS2 developed a massive catalogue of games for all ages and that, coupled with a low price point, made it a winner. I just can't see the PS3 following a similar pattern.
The PS3 seems to have been aimed at a more adult gamer audience and , for the moment at least, only appeals to people who already own every other console or are die hard Sony fans. I even know some people who own a PS3 exclusively as a Blu-ray player which is great for Sony I'm sure but not so good for games production and sales.
It's a good console but, for me at least, is a Blu-ray player that plays games on the side. There simply aren't enough games that would make me want a PS3. Not to mention that most of the games that do appeal to me will be available on 360. The only real loss for me is Final Fantasy.......gutted.

I'll get a PS3 eventually but like you I see no reason for anyone to get one yet. Blu-Ray means nothing to me. I've compared HD-DVD and Blu-Ray first hand and HD-DVD wins hands down for quality and price. Only good thing about the Blu-Ray drive is that games wont ever need to be multiple discs or need as much compression (less compression means less loading screens).
So long as games come out on 360 and PS3 tho then devs wont be taking advantage of the extra capacity that Bluray offers. If they have to compress games for 360 then they may as well keep it the same for PS3, rather than make a game using blurays capacity and then have to shrink it down/compress it for 360 (less work to make it the same on both).
Down the line tho I'll be getting a PS3. There will of course be games that the 360 wont get. People look at the exclusives for existing IP (Final Fantasy, MGS, Halo, GTA), most people ignore the fact that there is new IP coming out as exclusives, such as Crackdown on 360, that came out of nowhere. PS3 is getting Little Big World later in the year and that looks amazing. Once that is out I will seriously consider getting a PS3.
Who knows what new IP might spring up for any console. Nintendo will always have Mario, Zelda, Pokemon etc (and will exploit them to their fullest). MS will have Halo and anything by Rare. Sony will always have something up there sleeve (none of their exclusives are tied to them particularly tho). For now I'm happy with the wii60 combo and will be for some time.

The PS3 is just not worth the price on any level. They have one exclusive game thats good (Motor Storm.) They have Metal Gear? Who cares, we have Splinter Cell. I have heard of a ton of games that were suppossed to be PS3 exclusives, are now not (FFXIII.)
I think the big winner is the Wii. Since the 360 and PS3 are fighting each other, they're overlooking the Wii. If you look, alot of games that one of the systems get, that the other doesn't, the Wii gets as well. As for people saying that Sony is going to lose out with the PS3, that isn't going to happen. There will always be plenty of people who will blow a ton of extra money on a system that is sub-par, just to say they have it.

PS3 has two major exclusive that I'm dying to play. And neither of them are motorstorm.
F1 2007
Ridge Racer 7
Also when was FF13 confirmed to no longer be exclusive? It was all rumours when I last heard about it.
I don't agree with the wii being the big winner. Sure it's selling by the truckload now but will it have the staying power? Or will it just be another Gamecube?

I have all three and I rarely use my PS3 or the Wii. It is not that bad or anything but damnit I need some games on them lol. I keep renting games on 360 just for the achievements.
On PS3 I have :
Spider-Man 3 (very very bad for $60 , decent once you get the black suit though)
Resistance Fall Of Man (good game but once you beat it there is not much else to do.)
"Riiiiiiiiiiidge Racceeer!"( Enter Ken voice here from that press conference)
And for the Wii I have :
Zelda ( obviously a good game )
Red Steel ( I don't even want to talk about it , embarrassing lol.)
I hope Sony can step it up next year but after having PS3 a year by that time will really make me think twice about even keeping it.
To me it seems like a sinking ship everyone is jumping overboard to come to a more stable place. ( In terms of once exclusive games/developers. )

Great article mate,
I have all 3 and have had Wii and PS3 since launch I have to say all 3 machines will have their place but Sony need to get good next gen games on the market quickly or they will fall to far behind.
The Wii just should not be classed with the other 2 as it is aimed at a different market. It is a fresh angle on gaming and the ideas it has brought will be here to stay at least.
Having said that it is the 360 that still comes out on top for me and if I had to choose a game that could be played over any system I would get it on 360 and the sole reason is the achievements as the difference in gameplay is normally minimal

i love my 360 and i'm getting addicted to achievements fast. i've actually had my Wii longer and though its alot of fun i find it don't keep my interest alive for long playing sessions unless i take it to a party and alot of us are taking turns. Which means its a party machine. As for the PS3, well i have limited experience on it. I play ever demo at ebgames but with the console price i just can't afford one yet and therefore it gets a default boorum until a justifiable price is applied to it. Sure the graphics look good but you just can't get a real feel for a console by playing demo machines;)

tr00story. Well written too.
I used to slag off the original xbox something stupid when I had a PS2, But as I started to read and hear about the PS3, I leaned closer and closer towards the x360, and then when I found out a load of my workmates all played on live and I heard how excellent the online was, I jumped straight on the bandwagon so to speak and i'd never turn back.
I just wish the Wii had some decent games recently, the last game I bought was RE:4, since then they've either not interested me or been too childish/naff.
I wonder if developers are finding it hard to develop new ideas with the Wiimote now?

For me, there's just no way to justify the cost of a PS3 with the library of games that they have right now. The best games -- COD4, Assassin's Creed, GTA: IV -- are also available on the 360 and it looks like that's going to be the case for a while still -- they aren't getting Ninja Gaiden 2 or Too Human. Metal Gear Solid might convince me to drop the several hundred dollars, but until Sony can scrounge up some really sweet exclusives like God of War or the like, I just can't spend that kind of money.
For all of Microsoft's mistakes with the 360, they've done a rather amazing job making sure that their system isn't getting shut out of the good games. They broke Sony's hold on Grand Theft Auto (even got some exclusive content for the 360) and they've gotten some great 360-only titles -- Ninja Gaiden 2, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Too Human. Someday, I'm sure I'll buy a PS3, but not in the foreseeable future.

Seriously - set up an HDTV with a PS3 and a 360.
PS3 through HDMI, XBOX 360 through component
Put it on split screen and run the burnout demo (free on both consoles) and you will see how good the 360 is in comparison.
Give it a try ;)

Great article - I couldn't agree more than Sony's arrogance and contempt for their customers has contributed to their downfall.
I'm obviously pleased to see the 360 doing well, but I'm even more happy that the Wii is such a success. I can't justify two consoles, but I'm pleased that Nintendo will be around for some time - they really are original and the masters of creating "playable" games.

I seriously think the PS3 never had a chance just because it came out later. The $600 price tag definitely didn't help either.
The xbox community is so much stronger partly because of Youtube (Machinima) and partly because of Achievements and this site.
I got a Wii and I like it, but it isn't a 360. It doesn't have cool features like achievements and the community isn't there.

i have played some of my friends ps3 and while it was good it lacked something the 360 and wii have in buckets: soul.
the 360 and wii have soul and that makes them great consoles, the the ps3 is juat like a piece of german car engineering: functional, mildly pretty but overall boring and too sanitized. It feels like it has no life in it. every time i turn on my 360, i get the whirring and i just know it has just came into life and i know i am in for fun hen i start playing it...
Sonys ps2 was the pinncle on how to release a console and make it a success but they let down their ps3 and especially their psp. The psp is a wasted machine that could have been something but it was shoved aside for the ps3 development. WRONG MOVE.

As bad as Sony's decisions have been, I think their console will pull through and wind up performing just fine. I really wouldn't be surprised if it outsells the other two in a year or two.
Now I'm not saying this because I love the PS3. I own other Sony systems sure (PS1, PS2, and the finally seeming to be worth the investment PSP), but I made a conscientious decision not to buy a PS3. As noted above, the well developed community aspects of the 360 (and the fact that most exclusive games were going multi platform) swayed my decision toward the X360.
Now why would the PS3 come from behind to maybe outsell the others though? My true belief is Blu-Ray supposedly winning the format war has a lot to do with this. I know, as a gamer, when I'm ready to buy a next gen DVD player, I'll probably buy a PS3 because, by that point, it probably won't be that much more expensive than a stand alone and I'll get the added bonus of the PS3 to PSP content and playing MGS IV. :P I'm probably not the only person with this mindset too.
As for the Wii, I agree with twelve. The first little bit with it was awesome. To me, however, it's been so exposed as a gimmick that I just can't find much to do with it. I mean, basically... we all spent $250 for a neat controller. Most of the really amazing games on the system (Twilight Princess, Mario Galaxy) would be just wonderful without the Wiimote functionality. Those games which use the Wiimote that are fun are either a collection of mini-games which lack real substance, though they are fun for a little bit (such as Wario Ware) or they are fantastic games which are routinely overlooked and thus will likely not get their publisher's attention in making more games of that style (Zak and Wiki). Don't get me wrong. I'm not bashing on Nintendo. They did a great job with marketing their system and appealing to games' greatest untapped resuorce: non-gamers. I just find that, save for a couple of stand out titles, most of the stuff on the system is either two short or just boring.
That being said, I like the fact that the market is as it is now. Gives us, the gamers, tons of choices to find something that best fits our individual tastes. Also, hopefully, it makes developers work to develop better products because alot more is on the line if a game really falls flat.
Alright, sorry about going on so long. I'll stop now. ^^

the ps3 is 400$, and the 360 is around 350$ with the wii at 250$, i dont see how that works anymore whoever says it will never be possible. Also the ps3 comes with a built in blu-ray player while the hd-dvd (which hd just lost WB and is going to die out due to it being the most of the sales), costs 180$ seperate. I have a 360 and play it because its what my friends have, but i use the ps3 more due to bluray's and im sure plenty of good games will eventually come out whenever the ps2 finally ends, sure doing good sales still from that.
The Wii is also complete trash, it has the absolute worst games come out lately and sold mine a while ago just for some cheap credit towards the ps3.

I disagree. Get Unreal Tournament 3, Uncharted, Folklore, GT5 Prologue and Ratchet and Clank, then say the PS3 has no soul. It can't be done. Thanks to those 5 games PS3 is my favourite console out.
Also the big exclusives for 360 (Gears and Halo 3) really don't do it for me. Bioshock, Crackdown etc were brilliant games but unfortunately have got old and no longer hook me to the system. PGR4 and Forza 2 pull me back in occasionally but they rarely hold my attention for very long anymore.
All other games are multi platform (or don't interest me) so I can go either way with them. Before achievements would've been a factor that swayed me to 360 but since falling in love with PS3 I no longer care for them so much. Most games have objectives and unlockable content on them for PS3 that keep me playing more than GS kept me playing.

Don't get me wrong. I love my PS3. I just got Rachet and Clank: Future and Resistance: Fall of Man. I have not played them yet, but I have heard that they are very good. I have heard that Drake's Fortune is good too. What I am trying to say is that the online community for the 360 is much better than PS3 and Wii have. I think that having that community gives the system soul. Times are changing and it takes more than good games to make a good system. Now that we live in the online era, a good online community will really help a console to become alive. I bet that once "Home" comes out for PS3, it will help that system get some more life. I am looking forward to future games for the PS3 like Final Fantasy XIII, Gran Turismo V and Metal Gear Solid.

I prefer my PS3 online community far more than my 360. I play my 360 offline a lot of the time (which explains my achievements without timestamps) because I just don't feel the need to be online all the time.
With PS3 i power up, go into group chat for 10-15mins and then go onto play some games. I've never done that on 360 and probably never will.
As for Home I couldn't care less, yeah it'll be fun but it wont change my experience all too much.

I wish that I hadn't jumped the gun on buying my PS3.
I was a huge PS2 fan, and that won out for me over the original XBox. I loved my 360 when I got it but then I heard DMC4 was a PS exclusive, and heard it would be released by October of last year...so I was one of those idiots that bought the 60 GB PS3 for $800 just to play Resistance: Fall of Man until the exclusives started coming in.
Then, my PS3 started erasing all of it's data by itself, all the dates were pushed back and DMC4 became shared with the 360. The day I heard that my PS3 was gone back to EB Games. The only thing I want to play is Ratchet and Clank, but not bad enough.
I still have my Wii...I haven't played it in probably about 10 months. The controller just becomes so tiresome and frusterating after a while.
I do believe the 360 will stay on top, and that's coming from someone who originally had no interest in the XBox. If the PS3 gets more exclusives and maybe something addicting like the 360 achievements, it may push through due to it's large hard drive and Blue Ray system.

Just like with the X-Box, I backed the Xbox360 from Launch. It's had some problems but it's hands down my favorite console since maybe N64/Dreamcast. And the thing with Microsoft having a system is they have so much money to throw at it to get into the console wars/gaming market. I had a Wii and I enjoyed it but other then party wise (when i had friends over) I wouldn't play it much by myself other then Twilight. 360 is great and it seems like all the really great games come out as 360 exclusives. *CHEERS TO MICROSOFT*

I must confess, i am an owner of a PS2. Yes, please don't egg my house lol. I seriosuly thought i would stick with PS3 and pay out on Xbox fanboys for another few years but the 360 has won me over for a few reasons.
~Cheaper Pricetag - Let's be honest, it really does matter :p
~Graphics - It's funny how the standard HD component adds so much more to the games, it almost completely makes up for the PS3's brute processing power.
~Xbox Live and Achievements - These are probably the reasons why i love 360, it's jsut so much fun playing a game trying to reach a goal, its like the oldskool videogame arcades where you tried to get your name up on the High Score list lol.
Adding to that Sony's pain in the ass marketing and PS3's slight lack of 'strong' unique games made it an easy choice. :D

Well since I have all 3 systems in my house. 2 of which I own personally (being the 360 and PS3)
I can honestly say the PS3 is my fav out of the 3, Although I do play my 360 more. I can do alot with my PS3, Yeah I have a computer in the house, but having a Internet broweser in the system is a + for me, since the computer is shared between 3 people.
Although I can't visit a lot of sites on the Browser on the PS3, I can visit the main ones I go to so in the end it works out for me. the ablity to play PS1 and 2 games is a hugh plus for me, sure the 360 can play xbox games, but considering I own 75+ PS2 games, 10 PS1 games, and only about 12 Xbox games. The PS3 gets a nudge over the 360.
The blu-ray player, At first i wasn't to into it, but once I started investing in blu-ray movies I was shocked as to how much better they are. Now every movie that comes out, if there is a blu ray version of it, I will gladly pay the $30 for it.
But in the end, I find all 3 systems are amazing in there own way. Though all the constant flameing all the fanyboys do, make me sad as a gamer I still enjoy games.
but thats my 2 cents

I use the 360 for practically all my games and multiplayer stuff. The PS3 is way better for movies, photo slideshows and music etc.
The 360 has too many limits for that sort of thing. Such as it can only read a maximum of 100 songs from my USB stick and wont show pohotos unless i connect it to my pc which is kind of pointless.
Gaming wise the 360 wins hands down because of the community and the fact that nearly everyone u play against has a headset. On the PS3 when I play COD4 I'm lucky if 1 person out of the whole group has a headset and I'm even luckier if they speak English. Sometimes I hate living in Europe.:p
The DIVX player, card readers and ability to upgrade harddrives for storing videos and music on the ps3 though makes it win hands down on that front.
I don't have a wii so I'm not sure about it yet.

I own a 360 and a Wii and I spent a few months living in an apartment where my roomate had a ps3. Before the nex gen boom though, I had stayed close with all three systems, I owned a ps2, an xbox, and a gamecube. yes a gamecube. I valued the ps2 for the final fantasy series, the xbox for halo, and the gamecube for anything mario. the first nex gen system I got was the wii, and zelda was awesome, and it was inventive, but beyond that I couldn't really find much substance. I got my 360 last year, and it really was going to be either the 360 or the ps3, since I actually would have spent about the same on both. I went with the 360 and i have not looked back. Personally I think achievements push it way ahead of ps3. they give me more reason to play games to their full potential, instead of just finishing them quickly as i used to do in the past. I know i'm just repeating everyone else when I talk about how much more enjoyable the online gaming experience is with the 360, so I wont even go into that. The only thing I miss is of course Final Fantasy...and who knows, maybe I'll end up buying a ps3 just for that franchise ;). 360 is definitely on a different level from the rest though, in my humble opinion at least.

I have the Wii60. The Wii we got in Sep for my son,8,but to tell the truth he plays the 360 probably more. He really is not in to them 2 much anyway. But to me the combo gives you everything you want Resident Evil 4 was worth it all by itself and there is alot of gamecube games I would like to play i.e. the other Resident Evil's. Granted no one is going to be playing GC games in the near future, but was it not nice for Nintendo to look out for their gamers, full backward compatability and you can actually use the old GC controllers, that was too cool. Nothing could touch my 360 though I have always been an Xbox guy and I'm not sure why. The games the achievements and with Xbox live they are on a roll.

I was all for it & ready to buy a Wii on launch day but couldnt make it in time, My friend got one and all the launch games, i tryed them out and it turned me away from the Wii totally and was happy i didnt purchase one! My bros got the PS3 and its a great console but so overpriced & there arent very good A titles,*blu-ray is a plus* but for me i would have to go with the 360, dont quote me but i think 4-5 different bundles with the lowest $269 arcade version, Great games, achievements for bragging rights, variety of bundles to suite anyones wallet...360 overall i think will be the winner in the war if it hasn't already been decided by the people/sales.

Well, as an owner of all the next gen consoles, I have to say, people don't give alot of credit to the PS3 than it deserves. It's such a great console, but as I always say, it doesn't have an advanced online capability. I could really ramble on about this issue, but I won't. When my friends in school hear the word PS3, they tend to put down the PS3 for some reasons I don't comprehend.
Here's one story:
My friend would complain that Home is the biggest piece of shit ever to lay down on the earth. He thinks it will add capabilities to replicate an UNO incident. I have to agree, until they tell us how this process of showing videos and pictures are explained. He also thinks that this is the only thing Sony may sell consoles for... In my opinion, Home will make me feel like playing the Sims online with others. I have always loved that game and after seeing vids and pics, I cannot wait to see what Home has to offer.
Another friend...
He feels that the PS3 has no games. They have an abundance of games, including some really good ones he tends to call crap (UT3, Uncharted, R&C, Warhawk, and other multi-platforms). I agree that the 360 has alot more exclusives, but I find that the PS3 shouldn't be called gaming impaired. He also thinks that some good games coming out for it, like Haze, LittleBigPlanet, and MGS4 are all shitty looking games.
As a result, I didn't get alot in on the Wii, but my overall drift is that its a good console (Story 1 disagrees and says it's crap and sold it a month after waiting in line for it). I will grant the Wii60 it's victory, but in future references, I feel that the PS3 will still catch up in time. All the shit it's taken isn't right, even with all the capabilities it has to offer.

I think all the shit its taken (past tense) is right.
The shit it continues to receive however isn't right.
Yes there were problems and very obvious flaws (the lacklustre games and price come to mind) however all of these are no longer big problems. My PS3 now gets as much use as my 360. I have trouble deciding which console to buy games for (except when there are big differences like The Orange Box).

Thanks (I was typing pretty fast)...:)
I think the only time I get stuck between playing a game is which I will have more fun playing it on. For example, I buy alot of storyline games for my PS3 and multiplayer games on my 360 because of my friends, etc. And it's quite pricey, but don't buy it if you won't use it alot. 2 great systems, but I'm split between the 2.

Well, for all the people saying the Wii is better than the PS3 - it isnt. Thats just supid lol. The PS3 is far more advanced in every way and at the moment is just waiting for some of its big games to come out. The Wii has a fun factor, but it soon wears off. Great for multiplayers, but thats about it.

PS360 would whoop any console out there. You have Warhawk and Gears, Uncharted and Bishock. Utdalan is right, this would be the choice if it were considered. The Wii is not the best console, it's fair, but not something to rave about. The PS3 & 360 are dominating consoles. :p

Yeah there's not many decent games on the Wii yet, but i reckon it's the only "next gen" console that has the offline multiplayer fun factor equal to Goldeneye on the 64 or Halo/Far Cry on the original Xbox. Nothing on the 360, apart from perhaps 3D Minigolf on XBLA, has even come close to reminding me of those good old pissed-up days.

I didn't say it was a reason to buy one, i said it was a decent game on the system. Nor did i even imply Bax was wrong about the PS360 being the best setup, merely that the Wii does have at least a handful of games worth playing on it.
No one game is worth getting any console for but to say "that's a reason to spend £400 instead of £200" is illogical to say the least. Besides, it's far more fun to control on the Wii.

Not in my opinion. I strongly dislike the wii controls.
Also I tend to buy each system for just one game (that's probably because I'm paid too much tho).
Xbox 360 - Ridge Racer 6
PS3 - Ridge Racer 7
Wii - Zelda (and that remained the only game I had on it for 6 months)
PSP - Ridge Racer
DS - Mario Kart
Mac Mini - Playing WoW without moving a massive PC (before I got my laptop)
Those are the games that determined when I bought each system. The other games I buy later on are just the icing on top.

There's little correlation between money and buying a system for a single title, more to do with you personally being more into this "hobby" than most I would assume.
Anyway, all that aside my point was purely this: the Wii does have games worth playing and still is unrivalled in offline multiplayer this gen as it should be considering that's one of the markets Ninty have set in their sights.

The Wii has some games definitely, not alot, but there are some good ones out there. The 360 is a great online console, hands down, great servers and loaded experience. The PS3 is a multimedia console on top of a developing and hopefully a good console. Hopefully things will start flying soon, it's such a nice console as well.
Basically, it's based upon yourself. I bought the 360 because my friends had it, I bought a Wii because it's innovative and fun with friends and family, and I bought the PS3 because the Ps2 was great, potential with multimedia (Blu-Ray), and Home looks pretty top notch. So, in conclusion, they are all great consoles, but it's personal preference and experience.

I love Ridge Racer (in case you can't tell with it being the deciding factor for most of my console purchases). Ridge Racer 6 is still one of my favourite games on the 360, if it hadn't been for that I dunno when or if I would've bought a 360. Up until the moment I got one the 360 was very meh to me.

I'm a big advocate of the Wii60 combo myself. You get your 10 minute casual gaming fix with your Wii (not to mention the party games for when you have company over). And you also get your serious next-gen gaming fix from the xbox360 library.

Thats a nice non-biased article there minty. Has to be the first one that I have read on the subject of the latest consoles.
Personally I don't like the PS3 has I feel the controller to be a little on the awkward side (I've had several PSones and about 4 PS2's) and well the shear size of the unit... It's bigger than the original Xbox lol and I remember sony fanboys yelling about how big and monstrous the Xbox was :P
The main thing I look at in a console is the games. I can adapt to any controller and so far the only Game that Sony has as an "Exclusive" (and lets face it that usually means for 6 months) is Final Fantasy 13.... which I've heard is rumoured for 360 anyhow. Devil May Cry 4 as well as Assassin's Creed Both were supposed to be PS3 exclusives and yet they still came out on the 360.
My point being is that if you can get great games on both platforms why shell out all that money for a blu-ray player (because lets face it thats what the PS3 is for) that you wont necessarily use... Also added to that is the fact that the xbox 360 has some pretty good Exclusives (for a console) such as Bioshock, Blue Dragon, Crackdown and yes Gears OF War as well as Halo 3... But the last two ain't as good as what they should of been.

There's little to no chance the 360 will see FF13. And i wouldn't be surprised if in a years time the PS3 catalog is actually very tempting... there's more than a handful of decent titles on it already.
And Stewy: I think the only legitimate problem anyone can have with Sony is their PR of times past. Anything else is just showing an odd allegiance to some plastic and circuitry.

Hideo Kojima says that Bluray isn't big enough for MGS4, it's never coming to 360.
And Haze was always PS3 exclusive, it was a rumour about it going to 360. The PC port has been abandoned.
The only reason games were looking at going multiplatform is because the PS3 had a poor start. Which is why Assassins Creed and DMC4 became multiplatform, the PS3 wasn't looking successful so the companies decided to go multiplatform to gain more sales. As the PS3 continues to sell well the more exclusives it will hold onto, such as Haze, MGS4 and FFXIII.

All though i was a big Nintendo fan
I bought a 360 to play R6V with my work mates online
And never looked back. It totaly converted me to the 360.
I still love my Wii but it's more like my party console,
bar a few awesome games like Mario Galaxy And Metriod Corruption.
But simple games like Wii Sports are so genius you have to like them..
There is nothing like the Wii at the moment and it works really well when developers spend time getting the controlls right.
So im my opinion the PS3 is a waste of money when the 360 is cheaper and has a much better catalogue of games and performace wise theres nothing in it.

Bear in mind, this was written all but a year ago, so take that into reflection.
Now the PS3 is sub £300, I wouldn't buy a Wii. It's fun, but its not fun for long. And the PS3 continues to get games coming out- Drakes Revenge is great, and Haze will be a console seller. Plus now BluRay has one, its a great option for that. Cant see MS releasing a BluRay add on drive for £100 in the next year.

Thats only 2 games and 1 of them(HAZE) will eventually come out on the 360 anyway
The PS3 wont properly catch up with the 360 bcos by the time it would, it'll be near the end of the 360's life.
On average a consoles life is about 5 years before the new/next generation is out
So if sony does catch up, it wont be for long bcos the next xbox will be out in 2-3 years

at the moment for it by far is the xbox 360, but yes there is a but here, playstation 3 can be an outsider here for me ps3 dont get as much press as the 360 does with there torns and that. I will give it at least until the end of this year if ps3 dont make a push then 360/Microsoft will be the game console daddy for some years to come.

Agreed twelve. I guarantee that game will not come out on the 360, it just won't.
The reason why I believe the 360 is such a great console is of it's impeccable online experience and the achievements. Each console has their own exclusives, the 360 has some very good ones: Gears, Halo, Viva, etc. To tell you the truth, I didn't pick up my 360 until after the release of the PS3. The way the 360 caught me were it's cool exclusives and my friends all had it.
And to those who believe the PS3 has little or no games, look again. There are multiple games the 360 has that the PS3 has as well. And Sony has some pretty amazing exclusives itself: MGS4, GT5, Warhawk, Uncharted, etc.
And to end all this which is cheaper: The 360 is roughly no more that 50 dollars cheaper here in the U.S. I tempted 4 of my friends to pick one up ever since the 40GB. They all fell in love with it (My achievement whore friend picked one up; hasn't picked up his 360 in about 2 weeks)

Unreal Tournament isn't on 360. It's coming to it but from what I hear MS aren't going to allow user mods, which will suck.
And how is the PS3 inferior to the other consoles? In my view it's the best of the bunch, I've been buying most of the recent multi platform games for it.

UT without mods isn't worth a look as far as I'm concerned, I'd hope Epic refuse to release it without support.
About Haze: In response to reports it'll never hit the 360 Ubisoft stated within the last few days Haze is PS3 exclusive "for now". Not that it's anything to be excited about either way, seems fairly mediocre. Hurry up with the next Timesplitters for god's sake.

For now could just mean that the PC version is back on. I wish they'd stop flip-flopping around tho and just announce what's going on. I disagree with it not being anything to be excited about tho. It's one of my most anticipated new games (along with Little Big Planet), I've been a big fan of Free Radical since the first Timesplitters.

I think the only reason I'm looking forward to Haze is that it's Free Radical making it. Each delay kinda takes away from my excitement a little bit. I wouldnt be entirely surprised if it ends up being crap tho.

just bought a PS3 last week adn it really is quite good. The playstation store has a lot less on it but it's all quality at top notch prices. I've been playing it alot recently (Gran Turismo 5:Prologue, Resistance, motorstorm, Pain, Theme Hospital, LocoRoco). The only thing that has dragged me away from it, to play on my 360 is COD4 (my clan trains on it every sunday) and Rainbow Six Vegas 2.
I hardly play my wii at all, only when amtes come round. Am REALLY looking forward to House of the dead 2 + 3 though - i know it's out now but i have no money :(

As s former PS3 owner i have to say i loved bluray and the general media capabilities and not so much the games and online gameplay (I personally didn't think the games were any better on ps3 than the 360, only difference for me was that they cost a little more.) In terms of online gaming the 360 is without a doubt the better console for content and gaming. I wasn't too impressed with Sony's new online slow motion feature aka Lag. No doubt at some point in the future i'll pick up another ps3 as there are some great exclusives coming out but for now i'm more than happy with me xbox.:)

The combination of consoles has to be either Wii + PS3 or Wii + 360. I'm the latter as the Wii offers something different whilst the PS3 is basically in direct competition with the 360. I chose the 360 combo because 1. The price, 2. Everything great that was exclusive to Sony can be acquired on a Microsoft console now (GTA, Pro evo etc.), 3. Better exclusives (Fable, Halo etc.) and finally 4. (I did have one but it escaped me ¬_¬).

I couldnt disagree more. I own all 3 and if I had to choose two it would be PS3 and 360.
I'm buying most games on PS3 and only exclusives on 360. GTA4 was the hardest multiplatform game to decide a platform for but I decided to get it for PS3 and if the DLC for 360 turns out to be worthwhile then I'll get it for that too.
#1 The price is not all that different anymore.
#2 When are Gran Turismo 5, Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII, Ratchet & Clank, Killzone, Tekken, etc coming out on 360? GTA and Pro Evo were never Sony exclusives. The only long running exclusive that went multi platform was Devil May Cry.
#3 See above. Each console has there great exclusives.
#4 The 360 has the RROD. The PS3 has reliable hardware. I made a 4 for you.
Wii however has a handful of good games but is only really entertaining when you have a group of friends over. Problem is when I have friends over we'd rather hook up our PS3s or 360s and play on the LAN.

Sony actually supports an extra Operating System. It is possible to partition the HD on the PS3 and use it to run a build of Yellow Dog Linux which essentially gives you a full Computer at your finger tips that doesn't include any M$ B$.
Sorry, figured someone needed to make this point. :D

Not just YDL. Any Linux OS that has a power pc distro. Unfortunately with only 256MB of RAM and No access to the RSX GPU it doesn't make a great PC. Very powerful processor doesnt make up for the shortcomings of other areas.
It is enough to run most emulators though, all the way up to N64 work great as far as I know. So it's got the base homebrew support sorted already.

Yes, 256mb is a drop off. I would hope that Sony would release something to enable you to increase the RAM. Would be awesome to play PC version of some games off the Sony cells.
I just said YDL because from what I know it was fully supported by Sony, as they gave Terrasoft access to early PS3 builds to develop the OS. Only other one I know of being run on PS3 was Ubuntu and Canonical is supposedly dropping support for PS3 with Heron release. I personally don't like the Enlightenment GUI with YDL, I'd prefer GNOME or XFCE. Haven't really figured out how to change the GUI with their set up as I'm mostly a Ubuntu user. :)

I don't really see it as a war.. I see it as a competition to make money. I read an article in Official Xbox Magazine titled "A One Console Future" It was almost optimistic about it.. But there are a few problems.. We'd have nin-freaking-tendo being like "Originality, YAY." and ruining the system. Nintendo has potential. It just doesn't use it. The upside to the "One Console Future" is that now, I'd need two systems to play certain games, around $1200.. One console, $450. Of course, there was a time with one console.. The PC.

The main reason people buy GAMES consoles is for the GAMES hence the name. The difference between the three consoles is that Wii is the best for the family and casual gamers, the PS3 is the best machine but the 360 is simply far more suited for gaming than the other two. Everything about it is focused on gaming and gaming hard. It also has a whole line-up of insanely brilliant titles: the Wii and PS3 will never better Gears of War, Halo 3, Mass Effect, PGR4 (Gran Turismo is just PGR3 with 16 players online. Woop.), Crackdown, Forza 2 - the list goes on. Plus the 360 is cheaper than a PS3. I have all three and they each have good and bad points. But the reason you buy one of these things in the first place is for the gaming and the 360 is simply the best for it.

I'm gonna break this down into idiot steps for you. Because clearly you along with most of the 360 fanboys on here don't understand the way things work.
"#2 When are Gran Turismo 5 Over-rated,"
Your opinion. It doesn't mean it's a bad game.
"Metal Gear Solid 4 Don't Like,"
Your opinion. It doesn't mean it's a bad game.
"Final Fantasy XIII Over-rated, "
Your opinion. It doesn't mean it's a bad game.
"Ratchet & Clank LOL?,"
I don't even know if that counts as an opinion. But Ratchet & Clank is one of the best games that came out last year. The fact that you LOL at it clearly shows your ignorance and proves that you've never played it.
Killzone LOOOL?,
Just because the PS2 game was crap doesnt make the sequel lolworthy. If you can look at the screenshots and honestly not be impressed then perhaps it's time to get your cataracts removed.
Tekken Over-rated,
Your opinion.
Since when has your opinion been the gospel on what makes an exclusive good. Personally I can't stand Gears or Halo (which I place as way more over rated than anything the PS3 has to offer) but that doesn't make them bad games.
"GTA and Pro Evo were never Sony exclusives They were. GTA up to Vice City and Pro Evo up to number 4 I'm sure."
Have you ever thought that maybe they weren't on the xbox because the xbox wasn't out?
"#4 The 360 has the RROD. The PS3 has reliable hardware. I made a 4 for you. This is probably the best point you made, reliability is a huge downfall on the 360's part but I can't exactly vouch for PS3 either when I haven't heard great things about that either."
You haven't heard great things because you don't want to, like every 360 fanboy. The 360 hardware failure rate was (past tense) 33%. The PS3 failure rate doesn't even have a percentage to go alongside it because the numbers aren't that high at all. There are a few cases where people have had problems but it's nothing compared to the epidemic that the 360 has had.

I did not read every reply as I am lazy so I apologize if I reiterate what someone else has already said, but I wrote an article on the same thing on a different website. My feeling is that achievements are going to have a lot to do witht he 360's success, it is an added feature that allows you to play the game with a little something to show for it. That being said who would play COD 2 on veteran if it wasnt for achievements? PS3 has an advantage witht he wireless network built in and the blue ray player built in but in reality thats all it has, the exclusive game lineup will always go to Nintendo, and it seems PS3 doesnt really have that exclusive must have title.
Anyway as for games, the only thing the PS3 has is it allows me to play final fantasy 7. XBOX 360 has xbox live which is the best online gameplay and if I have a choice between games for a system I go with 360, with my Wii I get all the nintendo exclusive games; Smash brothers, mario, Metroid, etc.. However the Wii controls are a pain in the ass, thank god they made smash brother use the GC controller, and they are doing the same with Mario Kart. Hopefully they will re-release Metorid 3 or come up with a download patch that allows use of the gamecube controller.
Anyway PS3 has some advantages, but overall the Edge is still with the 360. Although for Madden I will always be loyal to PS2. Weird I guess.

In my opinion, the Wii has great games - Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Brawl, MP3 - but the problem comes from the fact that the Wii's online SUCKS and that there is no sense of online community nor are there achievements. The Virtual Console is nice because a lot of the games are good, but the lack of any change in the games - not even a SLIGHT graphic overhaul - makes there barely any incentive to play them.
I think Nintendo has certain ideas right with the Wii, but they seem to be blissfully unaware that online gaming is revolutionizing the industry, and they are not taking proper advantage of that. Brawl's Wi-Fi mode is so laggy it's basically unplayable.
A system with all the interesting gimmicks of the Wii but great, solid gaming experiences of the 360, complete with the whole Xbox LIVE and achievements package, would be so good that nobody would ever leave their houses anymore.
Unfortunately I don't really see a place for Sony in this console war because many of the great games that were Sony-exclusive have come or are coming to 360. There will be a few great games, but that's it. The Wii is for casual gamers and parties, and the 360 and PS3 are for hardcore gamers, but the 360 beats the PS3 in almost everyway possible (except for graphics... and price) so 360 is the system of choice for serious gaming.
RK1 Reed

The Wii is like the new N64, except this time on online capabilities.
Remember? PS1 came out and started using this thing called CDs. Nintendo wanted to still use cartridges and lost a lot of money because of it. Hell, N64 was an excellent console. I still love my 4 player Goldeneye shoot em up days. But to me, the 64 didn't have a lot of great games at decent prices and I ended up buying a PS1 for games that were at decent prices.
Anyway, isn't the Wii just 2 Gamecubes ducktaped together?

That was a great read, Minty, and I found myself uncontrollably nodding with most of those points. I had the "priveledge" of playing on a PS3 when my sister came and stayed with us before Christmas and I have to say, I wasn't that impressed, nor excited to play it (hence the quotations). Granted she didn't have a lot of games with it and none of them were really 'my cup of tea', so maybe that's what let it down for me.
The only game I ended up playing was Motorstorm which was an alright game. Not amazing, but not utter crap. The choice between using the regular analogue sticks or the controllers six-axis was a good one, but I found it near impossible to go in a straight line with the latter.
Sadly, I haven't had the opportunity to play on a Wii yet, but to be truthful, I can't see myself getting that much out of it. I have one or two friends who bought one and they've given it top marks, but thanks to the 360 and it's achievement system, everything else seems somewhat less in comparison.

Well, I actually own all 3, however...like he said, PS3 is for blu-ray. It is pretty much the cheapest blu-ray player STILL! I still don't own ONE game for the PS3 because I am addicted to the Box since the first one came out. Wii is fun, but I don't find myself playing it enough because of serious lack in single player gameplay and no real internet multiplayer. The only time we ever take it out anymore is when we are drunk and have at least 3 people. So overall, yes...360 wins my vote. but now that HD-DVD has gone down the shitter, I think alot more PS3s are gonna start selling unfortunately.

I got the PS3 on launch and it was my first jump into the next gen era as well. I do not regret it one bit even though, over time, I have now purchased all three next gen systems and may even play my 360 and Wii more than my PS3 at the moment. However, this is only because I have beaten all 18 of my PS3 games completely so far and am waiting with baited breath for MGS 4 to come and take me back to my beloved system.
I will admit though that my neverending love for ps2 and its controller played a huge part in me going the PS3 route initially (I still love the PS3's controller over 360's especially for games like DMC 4) but the PS3 stands on its own as an awesome system that allows me to do anything I ever wanted on a console. The only thing it is lacking to be honest are more exclusive games and achievements. Other than that, I believe with the new wave of games coming through which, in my opinion, are stronger than those coming out for any other system will really usher in a new era for PS3 and I do believe it will eventually win the console war.
Until these new games come out though, I will play my 360 (Halo and Lost Odyssey FTW!) and my Wii (Brawl and Mario Kart!!) and enjoy them just as much as any other console I own. I have always been a collector of consoles so I never restrict myself to just one console from a generation so the console wars are not applicable to me. However, as an opinion I must say that the PS3 is my favourite console of this generation followed by the Wii edging second just because of brawl and mario kart. The 360 may be in third but I still enjoy it a lot and Xbox Live is absolutely amazing. This will keep me coming back to the 360 for years to come.

I agree with that entirely, I as well have bought a Wii and a 360, and the only reason I would ever get a PS3 is cuz of the blu-ray. I have always thought their controllers are clumsy, and the six-axis thing seems like they were just trying to steal some of the wii's thunder. and where I am, you could find PS3's shortly after they were released, but to get a wii, you have to go somewhere at 5 in the morning on the day they get a shipment.
Plus:
did you hear that MGS will have feature length cutscenes? 90 freakin minutes! who wants to sit there for an hour and a half?
not me.

Wii- Good if you never want the kid in you to die and if you still belive in the kid games.
PS3- Good for more of a hardcore gamer. Good for teen and adult gamers.

I have both the Wii and 360, and there both great. But the wii is more of a secondary system to me, if you get a wii you NEED a 360 or PS3 to go with it.
The 360 has a better game library so thats why Wii60 > PS3

I've always felt that the PS3 is a solid console, but that it has too few unique games to distinguish it from the other consoles. I don't really care for many of the games that do distinguish the PS3, and many of those few games often come to other consoles. Perhaps the new games coming out will change my mind. As far as a blu-ray player goes, I really don't see any point in getting one as of yet. There are too few actual movies for the blu-ray player, while just about anything I'd want to watch is on DVD.
Where the 360 exceeds the PS3 and Wii is the online service and community. Although each has its own special features, the Wii being unique through its games and layout and the PS3 having great hardware, the 360's online capabilities and consistently good games is keeping me a fan. I haven't used my Wii since the massive dissapointment of Brawl having the worst online play I've ever experienced. The PS3 does have good online play, but it doesn't stack up to the 360. I'm a social gamer, I love chatting with my friends, watching DVD's, doing homework, playing games, and whatever else over the net. The 360 is just the best at all that.

I just read this whole thread from start to finish on my PS3. I own two PS3 systems (one for me with a 320 gb hard drive and one for my fiancee with a 60 gb hard drive). I love both the PS3 and the xbox360 (beta tested xbox live). I have no desire to purchase a wii, although it may be a fantastic system as well. I just couldnt imagine not having both systems... I really think that the PS3 is gonna catch up to the xbox360 as far as games go though. Bioshock is coming out on the PS3 just as The Orange Box and Lost Planet did. Im sure many more will be following. Luckily I havent had any hardware problems with either system so far. You will never hear me bash a system, I think that they all have their dues coming to them. I love the achievements on xbox live, and I like the fact that you can put the bigger hard drive on the PS3 without voiding the warranty. I also like being able to use my bluetooth earpiece on the PS3 and if I get a phone call on my cell, I can just switch to the phone and back to the PS3 online chat when I am done. As far as controllers go the thing I really like about the xbox is not the feel, its the removable batteries. The PS3s batteries frizzle out and the controller is pretty much trash. I just wish that someone would come out with a console that had all the good qualities of both, the PS3s hardware and the xbox360s online service. That would keep me happy for years to come... By the way, I think that Im gonna buy another xbox for my fiancee tomorrow when I go pick up MGS4.
Cheers...

I think 360 will come out on top because sony keeps not listening to their fans and started putting advertisements for their own games such as MGS 4 (Advertises Blu-Ray, Hard Drives, PS1) and also all the good PS1 games are being released in Japan (Guilty Gear, Resident Evil 1+2, Metal Gear Solid). If sony listened to their fans in america more than they would probably come out on top of the market.

He's the fanboy? Okay, he IS a fanboy. I love the PS3 because my 2nd console was a PS1 and third console was PS2.
Metal Gear Solid - Okay, that is his opinion. I have played all MGSs since Metal Gear Solid for the PS. I like that game. I don't have a PS3, but definitely one of the reasons for buying one soon.
Final Fantasy XIII - I don't know, haven't tried XII, but X-2 showed that Final Fantasy is going down-hill. So, I am yet to be impressed, and to see how good it is.
Ratchet & Clank - Don't get the hype. Just another inane kids game. I tried this game's demo at my friend's house with his PS3. It's just button mashing with a little gun. Wow. Not.
Killzone 2 - Again. First episode was bad. Every PS3 owner pitied us for not getting Haze. I don't see no reason to believe in a developer getting so much better than it's last game. It's the same to believe Call of Duty: World at War is going to be better than the previous CoDs. Killzone 1 was a hype-bomb, so is this. I don't play games for graphics or detail, but seems someone does.
Tekken 6 - I played Tekken 3 on PS and Tekken 5 on PS2. Imo best fighters, perhaps not including Soul Calibur series.

I have all three systems, the 360 for the huge library of games and online play, the Wii for the novelty and esclusive games, and the PS3 for the Blu-Ray, Warhawk, and MGS. Just like the author stated - I'm a lover of games, not consoles and the 360 simply has more titles and features that appeal to me. The controllers are a huge plus for me - I have huge hands and the PS controllers always felt small to me. The first time I picked up an Xbox controller it just felt natural.
I think PS will catch up a bit, but the 360 will remain on top in the near future at least. Ease of programming, existing library, and online just make it difficult to beat right now.

Totally agree Twelve, well said.
Check out the new Killzone2 Trailer on PSN, Twelve it looks incredible.
Also I read a few weeks ago there is a failure rate stat for PS3 now, it is .2 of 1% thats one in 500 vs. 1 out of 3.

No doubt that's because of the 2.40 update having problems.
As far as I've heard Sony are taking in any consoles bricked by 2.40 and fixing them for free regardless of if the warranty has expired. Which is exactly what they should do. I've also heard the turn around on sending a console in and getting it back is less than 2 weeks, not a month.

Why do some people insist on bad mouthing games from another console? Each console has its own good games but just because, for example, Gears is better than MGS4 (only slightly), that doesn't mean MGS4 and everything worse than it automatically sucks. If you thought that you would be ruling out Halo, Forza, PGR, Mass Effect etc etc and a big long list. MGS4 is amazingly good but not as good as some other TPS offerings.
I enjoy all three consoles and play each one for their good games, not their blu-ray or marketplace or Mii's (WTF?). I have nothing against any game on any console and neither should you. Unless its Jumper. That was pap.

You're right. One is fun and lets you play (an actual video game) and even play through it with friends while the other lets you watch it for 30 minutes then play it for 30 seconds then repeat (a movie or interactive experience - Night Trap anyone??).
How many hours of gameplay? Don't count the cutscenes that you watch in the gameplay time. The online component is a different game altogether, a substandard game at that. They advertise it as a bonus!

I shouldn't respond to trolls, as you're obviously not acquainted with the Metal Gear Solid series. But I will anyway. MGS has always been about the presentation. The cinematic feel, the epic storyline, everything.

MGS has always been about the cinematics. There's approximately 5-6 hours of gameplay in the game (Assuming you're playing on one of the harder difficulties or if it's your first play through) and about 12+ hours of cinematics. I know the last cinematic (after you beat the game) is about 2 hours long. Also all of this is based on your opinion. I personally enjoy Gears more than MGS4 because it has an amazing online portion(and I just like the gameplay in Gears more), but that doesn't mean I don't like MGS4. MGS4 was possibly one of the greatest stories I've ever seen in a game. The depth of it was amazing, and it tells you everything about what's happening and what's happened.

I love my 360 to death. In addition to the 360, though, I also have a Wii (I won it in a contest, I wouldn't have one if I had to pay for it). It collects a lot of dust. SMG was a great game, and playing moldy oldies like Contra and Excitebike on Virtual Console is cool, but nothing about it matches the 360 in any way IMHO.
The PS3, though...wow. Several times, I've tried to convince myself that I want one, but it just doesn't seem worth it. The games are mostly better on the 360, which also serves as a great DVD player. Blu-Ray doesn't seem to have a noticeable difference until you're on a screen larger than 46", which I don't have. If you get one with back-compatibility you can play PS2 games, but if you have the games and they're that important to you, you probably still have the console. For the other media center and net browsing functions, an Apple TV with software from AppleCore LLC does the job way better and way cheaper (mine was under $200). So, while it seems like an awesome system, it's just not for me.
However, you will get my PSP when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers. :)

360 is probably my favorite current-gen console and I buy/rent all multiplatform games on 360.
That being said. I still like the PS3. There are some great games like Resistance, Uncharted, MGS4, Warhawk, etc. I actually clocked in a lot of hours into Warhawk. I do own a Wii too and I pretty much only play it when a good VC game comes out but besides that I haven't really played a retail game since March (SSBB). I would say PS360 > Wii60 but thats just me.

I own them all, but I love the 360 the most. The online is so much more sophisticated than any other system. I still like the PS3 though. The graphics are amazing with an HDMI cable on a 57 inch TV. And the Wii...I don't play it so much, as it's my brothers. Wii fit and Wii Sports are fun games though.

I love the 360, I played PS2 and never owned an Xbox so I wasn't sure if I would like the 360 but I think its great. The achievements and online play really sealed the deal for me. I was a BIG fan of SONY, they were doing everything right with the PS2, I mean the PS2 was the leader of that generation IMO.
But I think they tried to push the technology too far in the PS3 and it has backfired on them. How many developers have cancelled games on the PS3 cos it was too hard to program for. C&C Red Alert 3, is a good example of this.
Those who are old enough will remember this is how the Sega Dreamcast died, that & the same thing the Saturn died from, support!
Also they are allowing M$ to basically outbuy them with the games developers. I can think of 2 massive games that SONY lost the exclusives too to M$, Tekken 6 & Final Fantasy XIII, to me thats a BIG kick in the balls to SONY.
I have a PS3, Wii & 360, I cant believe how much im in love with my 360 specially after being a PS2 fanboy :P My Wii & PS3 never get touched!

I posted a while back and I will post my most recent opinion.
The reason why the PS3 is so high is because of its cell processor and bu-ray player. Sony, being the entertainment mogul that they are, tried to push Blu-Ray too fast. Just like when DVDs came into the world when VHS dominated. It took time for DVDs to take the spot in multimedia, but it did. If Sony took that out, I would say thats a 100 dollar difference in price, possibly more. That would put a competitive price against the 360. I love my 360, don't get me wrong. I also love my PS3 to death, there are lots of games that make it a great console. But it does piss me off when people say there are no games, it has most of the same games, except the 360 has more exclusives. It took a large step not everyone is ready for (people still use SD televisions), I think it's a great console, but not suited for everyone since they shouldn't have to pay 400, 500, or 600 for something they can't experience at this current time.

Xbox 360, FTW. Without a doubt. The only complaint I have that favors the PS3 is the slid in disk, I HATE trays, and that's the biggest problem with the 360.

Well, I changed my mind. I had previously said that a PS3 probably wasn't for me, but after trying out Little Big Planet and Resistance on a friend's box, I decided to pull the trigger and get a PS3. It's no 360, for sure, but I think it will help push the Wii into a one-way ticket to eBaytown. I don't really need three consoles, especially when the Wii's main function is to collect dust.
Pearson
01-04-2009, 06:56 AM
There are a few reasons why that I don't have a PS3, but the main ones are the price, 360 has most of the same games coming out for it, i.e., RE5 & FFXIII and I don't need blu-ray while my dvd player is good enough to watch movies with. So until the PS3 gets more exclusives and blu-ray movies become the industry standard at an affordable price, I won't be getting a PS3 anytime soon.

And If They Want A Fucking War Go For The Army

Also Its About Personal Prefrance

Personal Prefrace To What You Enjoy.
Every Conosle Has Its Benefits And Disadvantages
I Just Picked XBOX 360 Over PS3 Because I

PS3 Is A Bit Pricy But I May One Day Pick It Up

If you have the cash, go for the 3 consoles... But I own Wii & X360, however I "soft-modded" my Wii so I could use Homebrew and Emulators for my "old-gamer needs", and my 360 is for my "hardcore" needs. I'm planning to get a PS3 by the end of this year... But Wii & 360 is a good choice if your budget is tight (like mine), but you'll end playing more Xbox anyway... Wii is just not getting good games (no more shovelware-minigames please!!!)

I think nintendo will win in the long run as they have clasics games eg super mario world, but also here good for the old folks with what ever so the wii will be the living room hit and then from the ps to 360 i would have to say the 360 is better but i have not used a ps3 so i cant say yet but i will buy one one day for Blue ray but i donwload my movies off of *** any ways so i think i would buy an apple tv befor a ps3 as i have all of my movies in .mp4 and apple tv format as i use that when i hook my mac book to my tv (I'm a big apple nerd) yea.... But I like the x-box as it has better online, Achevments, better market place, DLC (E.g GTA Lost and damed) Well almost. (Theres I 3d dic* in it XD) so yea what ever but from what i have to say the hard core gamer is going with the x-box and the living room gamer is geting the wii and the people that want blue rays get the ps3 XD
I have all 3 systems. I never play the wii and plays the ps3 every 2 or 3 days. I play the 360 everyday though.

Very well written, and I agree with pretty much everything you say. You weren't bashing the consoles, just calling them off (that makes sense, right?). More info comparing the wii would've been better, but it was still great.

My wife and I own a PS2, a Wii and an XBox 360. We haven't gotten around to getting the PS3 yet. The PS2 hasn't been on in ages (over a year for sure).
The Wii I play about once or twice a week (still lots to play on VC, though actual good Wii games are few and far between)
The Xbox is played everyday. For us, it has the best selection of games this gen, plus the achievemnt hunting adds some extra fun.

I have all the mainstream consoles from like the last 4 gens and honestly the PS3 is the least used... I have literally only played it twice in the time i have owned it.....

Nintendo always totally owned everything, but the Wii has let me down. It's too .. Family business. X360 is best now. I've always had a born hatred against playstation.
