No, unless you just reached a checkpoint.

That doesn't seem right. I've died several times and I usually end up with 10,000-20,000 orbs at the end of the level.

Again, unless you just passed a check point. Any progress made prior to death if not saved by crossing a check point is lost. This includes orbs.
