Can't get rid of the spiders on the walkway!

Need a little bit of help guys -- I'm in the Canyon level right near the end where I have to walk across a walkway in a cavern after killing several scorpions and flying creatures. The only problem is the minute I step foot on the walkway, I'm attacked by spiders and killed. No matter what I do, I cannot get across w/o being attacked by the spiders.

Help?
