I just picked up The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks. It's the first book in a trilogy which I've heard nothing about. However, after reading the back and seeing the very Assassin's Creed-like cover, I couldn't resist the urge to pick it up. Plus, it won David Gemmell's Legend award and Gemmell is my favorite author. Has anyone else read this book or even the whole trilogy? How is it? Worth keeping and reading through?

I read the first two books and started the third. I just got sick of the series by then. Hopefully you'll have a better experience then I did.

Sick of the series by the third book? Ouch. That's not a good thing. I've gotten sick of a series before but it's usually these 10-15 book epic series and I get sick of them around book 7 or 8. Usually by the end of a good trilogy, I'm still wanting more. I hope you just have a short attention span :p

Nope, I've read the Wheel of Time series (although it's still unfininshed), The Malazan Book of the Fallen (also unfinished), and (most shamefully) The Invaders' Plan. These series have come in at 12, 9, and 10 books respectively with 2 more for the WoT and 1 more the TMBotF.

I don't know what that dude is on about. This is probably my favorite fantasy trilogy. Read on and enjoy, my friend.

This was the last fantasy series I read, and I adored it! Couldn't put it down and lost plenty of sleep until I'd finished, ha.

Each to their own, but I felt the characterisation drew me in fairly early and held me the whole way through, and the plot was twist after turn, never letting me actually set the book aside each night until I was too tired to keep going, ha (and I was having some early starts with work, ugh). An incredible read. Keen to pick them up for keeps and read them again.

It's easy to read, but pretty vacuous stuff. I read the first book maybe a year ago and can't remember a single character or plot point. Weekes is some distance behind authors like Abercrombie, Bakker and Rothfuss when it comes to producing memorable (first time) trilogies.

I read all 3 books in the space of about a week on Honeymoon. My wife started reading the first one and started catching me up to the point we were both reading the 3rd one at the same time! (It was a beach holiday so lots of reading was done)

I would put this in the pulp fantasy genre. Decent page turning stuff but nothing too deep. If you like this I would suggest you check out the Chronicles and the Legends of the Raven by James Barclay. A similar style fantasy series.

Same, it just started getting predictable and a little too far-out, ya know? Like the author was scrambling for ideas by the end, not quite as bad as the Saw Saga though.

This series was great. If you want to read something similar try assassin's apprentice by Robin Hobb. That is the first book out of a series of 6. The farseer series(books 1-3) and the tawny man series(books4-6).

Just like OP, i picked it up back in the day (think 09) because of the assassin's creed like covers. It is by far my favorite series, and one of my favorite authors. I'm a huge assassin themed nut, so this was right up my alley.

Weeks also has another series called The Lightbringer. pretty awesome. check it out if you haven't already.

I read it and enjoyed it quite a bit. I'd give it about 9/10 honestly.

These books are great, I have read them so many times it isn't funny, it also gets better everytime I read it as well.
