A is for Avengers

The viral campaign for Iron Man 2 (http://uk.movies.ign.com/objects/142/14251831.html) continues, albeit not at the pace of Disney's Tron Legacy (no one has jumped out of a helicopter yet for Iron Man 2 as far as we know). Still, the latest installment in the Marvel operation just might be giving us our first look at the team logo for The Avengers (http://uk.movies.ign.com/objects/769/769931.html).

Yesterday a new viral site was launched for AccuTech Research & Development (http://www.starkexpo2010.com/accutech/), a subsidiary of Tony Stark's company. There you can learn all about their "latest breakthrough in anthropo-robotic physical enhancement -- 'the HazTech Exoskeleton.'" Take a guess as to whether or not this tech will wind up in the movie.

But more interesting is the AccuTech logo, as spotted by Bleeding Cool (http://www.bleedingcool.com/). Could it be that this arm of Stark's conglomerate eventually becomes the maker of the super-team's tech? That logo sure looks like the Avengers' "A" from the comics…

Of course, we're still a ways off from Avengers, but it looks like Marvel is at least planting another Easter egg here. What do you all think? Comment below!

I don't remember from the Avenger comics if Starks Industries had anything to do with the Avengers but it would make since. Comic book movies stick to the comics just enough to please the fan boys and the producers add whatever they feel is needed.

As far as landing a director for the Avengers (http://uk.movies.ign.com/objects/769/769931.html) movie goes, it looks like Marvel may be avoiding the methodology it uses when casting its superhero flicks lately -- rather than hemming and hawing over 101 different names, they appear to just be doing it. So who's in "final negotiations" to get the job?!

Joss Whedon (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/917/917746.html), that's who. The Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator was rumored to be up for the gig just a couple of weeks ago, and now Deadline (http://www.deadline.com/2010/04/marvel-close-to-whedon-hire-on-the-avengers/) is reporting that he is about to close a deal with Marvel.

Other than that, Deadline has little new to report on the film. We know that the picture will star Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/913/913855.html).), Captain America (Chris Evans (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/914/914210.html)), Thor (Chris Hemsworth (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/142/14218682.html)) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/913/913546.html)) -- and the Hulk, Wasp and Ant-Man will likely show up in some capacity as well.

Whedon, of course, has tried to get into the superhero movie biz in the past, having worked on a script for Joel Silver's failed Wonder Woman movie (for what was meant to be a directing gig). He's also written for Marvel Comics, including an acclaimed run on Astonishing X-Men and work on Runaways.

The Avengers is scheduled for release in May of 2012.

UPDATED: Variety confirms the Whedon news, and adds that he'll also rewrite Zak Penn's original script.
