You don't get to until Chapter 3 I heard, it's just like the Sphere grid from Final Fantasy X, but looks more simple.
I've heard it's like the Sphere Grid from FFX.

Yeah the crystarium is how are level up your characters stats and moves and then later on you get something called an omnikit that allows you to level up your weapons.

Story concerned. But you don't get to see it like say that your level 10 or so.You just fill the branches and learn more stuff.

Their ain't much customizing.Or i should say none.Just hold down the A button and fill all the lines up.
Atleast it gives us something to grind for =)

There isn't much customizing within any given role because you'll want to max it out for the stats anyways. But there is customization as far as which role you level up for which character. I imagine eventually you'll want to max all roles for all characters, but at the beginning, each character seems to have a role that they're best at.

The leveling up system is easy really. Each Character starts off with 1 role and you gain the other roles for your characters quickly. I have just started the 2nd disc and all my characters have 3 roles each.
You get Crystarium points after each battle and use them to level up. I am getting between 12 and 50 points after each battle. The top tier of level 1 upto 320 Crystarium points to buy stat and ability nodes and the final 'role level up' node requires 500 points.
Any nodes that you open for additions to Health, Magic and Strength are always active what ever role is active, meaning that you have to level up the skills together so you increase in stats quickly.
Also different Characters gain different abilities withnin the same roles. Hope was able to learn Fira on the Ravager level1. tier 3 but none of my others have that ability to unlock on level 1

Your character itself does not level up. You use the sphere graph to gain extra abilities and powers. And also have to level up the weapons they use by puring exp into them from pick ups, ect. I expected more from the games battle scenes and when you walk around, but they just give little maps and very straight forward levels. Very easy so far

do we get standard level ups that level our health, mana, and other stats? or is that all controlled through these crystals also? ya know old school level ups like from level 30 to level 31, or if you neglect someone and they are like level 18, and you bring them into a super hard fight and they level up like from 18 to 23 ahhhh, good times =p. so are we gonna have that or no?

I loved the sphere grid from X. Choosing which spells/stats to go after.

At least thats something to look forward to after hearing all the negative feedback on this game at least it brought back the Sphere grid from X. That was my favorite FF.

I've got high expectations for this game. I hope I get my fill. I don't mind the linearity considering that Final Fantasy X was my favorite FF game of all time close to Final Fantasy 7, but what I don't want is for them to get so wrapped up in creating a story that they make a JRPG..well....not a JRPG. I want to feel like i'm playing an RPG, not watching a movie the whole time.

No standard level up's you gain no exp from battles just CP points, which are used for the Crystarium. Gil is very hard to come by in the game. I am 11 hours into the game, pretty sure i have found most things, spent no money and only have 4,250. You get no money at the end of fights.
You gain CP points for ALL your charcacters. my party has split and when i swap between the two parties I'm pretty sure they have gained the same CP points (will confirm next time I switch parties)). They gain the same points if they are inactive in a party though
EDIT* You do gain CP points for ALL characters even when the parties have split
