Turning off the headset..?

Hey, yesterday i was playing on Forza 3, with my headset in and on the connector bit i had the switch to the LEFT hand side (if i didnt explain that well, heres a pic of the part im talking about: http://www.ixbt.com/consoles/images/info_xbox360/xbox360ph_headset_comm_1.jpg - in the pic the switch is to the right, but i had it on the left)

So anyway, i was playing and i had a radio on (quite loud) when someone i was online with asked if i could turn down the radio as it was annoying him (he was talking to me because he said my Gamertag)
So my question is, if it doesnt switch off the headset, what does the little switch ( http://www.ixbt.com/consoles/images/info_xbox360/xbox360ph_headset_comm_1.jpg ) do?

i assume your talking bout the official headset?
well to turn of your mic push the switch up so that orange is showing, alternatively puch it down to turn it on (green showing)

Is it an official headset? It will mute yourself. Where as my turtle beach, my friends have said they could still hear me when i put myself on mute (with cable still in). I dont know why that is...
