HDMI help

this is probably something really obvious but im not great with tv's and hdmi etc. etc.
ive just been at got myself a new hdtv with full 1080p compatability
i also picked up a hdmi cable
its all connected up to my 360, but the picture on my screen is quite visibly at least 2 inches to the left of the screen, cutting off a fair bit of the picture
i went through the hdtv settings in system settings and this problem doesnt happen when i put the 360 into either 1080i or 720p, but obviously i would like it in 1080p

am i doing something wrong or just missing a glaringly obvious option somewhere ?
and is there any real difference bewteen 1080i and 1080p ?

Hm. 1080p is making some wierd image for me aswell but only in the xbox menus, is the image still wierd for you inside games?

And regarding your questions about real difference, yes there is. But your eyes wont see it until you go like 50"+.

Try going through the different picture sizes, mine does that some times but usually because it's set at the wrong picture size. Usually when it happens i'll set it from natural to native and it'll fix it's self.
