I'm not sure if this has been touched on yet, but I'm going to post about it anyway because I'm into it.

So, supposidly, the tomb and remains of Jesus and Mary have been discovered.

Now mind you, I have no religious view on this but theoreticly, if this is true, wouldn't this completely destroy christian belief?

I'm curious DaKings Jewish thoughts on this. :p

One word: false.

Another word: stupid.

You asked for oppinions, there's mine.

(btw: I'm not being a jerk to you, just the people that decided to create such a stupid story)

No, I don't think it would destroy their beliefs. If anything it will fortify it.

just another story to hype up their image. And i agree, it wouldn'tchange anything about beliefs really.

I heard about this on the radio today. I love how the "hardcore Christians" (if you will) were trying to convince everyone that they were not the actual tombs. Just tombs of people who just happened to have the same names, lived in the same period, and just happened to be buried next to each other.

I'm interested on the outcomes of the story though.

The tombe was discovered in 1980, and the archeologist that found it doesnt believe its the tomb of Jesus.

Its James Cameron creating hype for his documentary. I mean, if they ofund this and it was proven, wouldnt this be the biggest religous find ever??

Honestly though, those names were VERY common at the time. I'm not Christian so I don't have any hidden agenda or anything but the names mean nothing. How many Mary's were in the bible? How many John's? Its like people back then had no imagination when it came to names :P

True BUT, if you are paying attention to the story, the tomb supposidly contains Jesus, Mary, and their sons. Which, according to them, is mathmaticly only narrowed down to 1 person.

And when I say it would destroy christian faith, I mean if this was somehow proven to be true. Because it would go against everything that the faith is built on.

True, False, Judiasm is the religion for me...

Either way, religion is so blown out of proportion, that it sickens me to think that its simply a tool used to control people...

Only for extreme individuals. (Who just wouldn't believe it anyway.) Many of the devout Christians that I know take the Bible as a collection of good ideas. They believe that the ressurection is a metaphor for Jesus ascending to the Kingdom of Heaven. Depending on how literally you want to translate things colors your perception. The ideology of Christianity goes beyond just a man. And while the Bible deifies the man, there are many Christians that believe he was a messenger of belief on earth. The extremity of belief for the individual will determine what a finding like this (if true) will mean.

There are a lot of incongruities with the Christian Bible and what we've since learned about our natural world. This doesn't mean people shouldn't believe what they choose. Many will argue that the message is what is important and the belief in something bigger than themselves. I don't think this would destroy anything. The people who believe the earth is only a few hundred years old will never believe that it's real, and everyone else will realize one of the greatest and most important archaeological finds in history.

Of course, that all assumes it's even true. Which we may have no way of knowing. Then again, I know virtually nothing of archaeology, so it is also possible that there are ways for them to know for sure.

They could carbon date any remains/fabrics/pottery/poop and get a rough date of when they either died or lived. If that just happeneds to be around the time at which 'Jesus' & co were hanging around then there is more 'evidence' of it being true.

Even if someone could prove that it was 'Jesus' then there will be people that deny it and people that take it as some kind of sign. Personally I couldn't give a damn whether it is someone that other people worship or not, I choose not to care and stick by that choice.

Whether it will change the world is another matter. People will see it as a conspiracy/marketing tool/lie/whatever. If it turns out to be 'Jesus' then good for them.

I want to see if ancient Tetris fossils exist or not.

The guy that actually found it claimed to have found the tomb of someone other biblical person a while ago (maybe Peter??) and that turned out to be a load of crap so I don't really trust him as a source!
